Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing the early release of more than 20,000 low-risk prison inmates as a way to save money amid a worsening budget crisis.
The Sacramento Bee reported on its Web site Thursday that the governor will ask California lawmakers to authorize the release of certain non-serious, nonviolent offenders. The prisoners would have less than 20 months to go on their terms.
Sex offenders would not be eligible for release under the proposal.
The plan would cut the prison population by 22,159 inmates and save the state $256 million in the fiscal year that begins July 1, the Bee reported. Savings could reach $780 million through 2010.
The proposal also calls for eliminating more than 4,000 prison jobs, most of which would involve guards.
Probably not popular, but given the money woes California has spent itself into, they’ve got to do something.

In what may be the largest early release of inmates in United States history, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s administration is proposing to open the prison gates next year to some 22,000 low-risk offenders....
Probably not popular .. (understatement) ;-)
I gotta question the timing of this....LMAO
Hey Ahnold, how about building a low-cost prison to hold low-risk inmates? Or better yet, put a fence around San Fran and call it a prison...to house 22,000 low-risk inmates?
How about a tent city like AZ’s Joe Arpio has for all CA inmates?
I wonder how many of them are illegals? Will he be “releasing” them to southern Mexico or southern California?
Is the son-of-a-Nazi going to put them up at his house ?
I’m so glad that one of my last votes before leaving CA was for McClintock!
Although, in Arnold’s favor, we now know for certain what will happen if a liberal Republican wins the White House...
WHAT THE #$&%&*@! IS WRONG WITH HIM???!!
Lately, he’s been doing things that make Lincoln Chafee look conservative.
Never trust a RINO. NEVER.
The alternative was even worse. Red Davis
We should just put all of them on Alcatraz Island and let them fight to the death, last one standing gets parole.
Nah... Better to just keep releasing "minor" criminals to prey on a disarmed public. I can hardly wait for this latest improvement to our lives here in Kalifornia.
Notice the MSM outside of California barely our state’s screwed up finances. The example of what happens to government run by liberals is just too much to mention during an election cycle. As for Arnold, thankfully the framers of the Constitution were smart enough to insist a president be born in this country. Otherwise some idiots would be trying to push this hack into the White House. Interestingly enough his piss-poor performance as governor (or governator as they lovingly refer to him here) may actually get him elected U.S. Senator over Barbara Boxer.
This guy’s no run-of-the-mill RINO. He’s an Uber-RINO. I’ve never, in all my life, seen a Republican go so far into left field.
No worries. It is going to cost more to retry them after they all get out and commit greater crimes, thus have to go through the court system again, trials, juries, and then longer sentences for worse crimes. Way to go S***head RINO socialist-liberal-commie-pig-&*#@*&head. Arnie, like Jorgie Bushwinski, are both losers.
Here’s a novel idea. How about executing those on death row instead.
Davis forced the Republicans to stand up and fight him. Ah-nold merely divides and shrinks the party with his Socialism. Like a cancer.
Yup, 8th most influential liberal in America. The only thing that British paper got right.
