France's most famous ice cream maker has has invoked the wrath of actress turned animal rights crusader Brigitte Bardot after creating a foie gras flavour.
Berthillon, founded in 1954, assures customers on its website that its ice cream contains "50 per cent foie gras of French origin made from grain-reared geese", and recommends it as an aperitif spread on spiced bread.
Miss Bardot accused Berthillon, which sells its famed glaces on the Ile Saint-Louis - the island on the Seine in the heart of Paris - of being an "accomplice to this industry of suffering and death".
72-year-old former movie star
"Force-feeding is real torture for geese and ducks that must swallow in a matter of a few seconds so much food that their liver swells up to ten times its normal size," she said. "Blood should not be spilled to make new ice creams, it makes no sense."
There are regular debates in France over whether making foie gras is cruel.
A recent study by France's national agricultural research institute, L'Inra, concluded that geese did not suffer. This countered a 1998 European Commission study that said they did. However animal rights campaigners pointed out that the Inra study was part-funded by the goose farming lobby.
I bet her liver is just about shot.
Outlawed in Chicago.
The years have been unkind to the venerable bathing beauty.
Not that bad for 73 years old.
She’s wearing black - we’re seeing the best part of her, nowdays ...
I read once that Brigitte Bardot said she would not resort to plasic surgery or other cosmetic procedures, that she preferred to age naturally. I don’t know if she has still held to that, but I think she looks like a 72 year old would be expected to look.
We’re so used to seeing celebrities getting themselves ‘nipped and tucked’ to death as they grow old - it is refreshing to me to see someone that is not so obsessed with vanity.
It reminds me of Fred Thompson, who sure takes a beating here at Free Republic & elsewhere for looking ‘old’. Guess what? If we all live long enough, we will get old too! I love it when people have the self-confidence to say - this is ME - like it or not.
Her brain too...that is, if she had one to begin with.
"Mmmmmmm Foie Gras Ice Cream..."
You can keep the ice cream.
I’ll take the foie gras.
In college, I worked in an industry of suffering and death. They disassembled bovines and made many delicious food substances from their remains. I never lost one minute of sleep.
It may be time to put Brigitte out of HER suffering ...
...steadily morphing into Helen Thomas.
Is she a vegan? Maybe she should have eaten some goose livers a long time ago.
yitbos
I thought Homer preferred donut-dough ice cream.
Rush is right do we really want to see a woman age before our eyes
I looked Bardot up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigitte_Bardot
Here is a part I copied about her, how some of the French are mad at her over her remarks about muslims and homosexuals - seems like she has more brains than many.
Her husband Bernard d'Ormal to whom she has been married since 1992 is a former adviser of the Front National. With the publication of her 2003 book A Scream in the Silence the reclusive Bardot has come under considerable fire for what some of her critics have termed her "anti-muslim and homophobic" comments. In May 2003 the MRAP announced it would sue Bardot for her published views. Another organisation - the "Ligue des Droits de l'Homme" (League of Human Rights) - announced they were also considering similar legal proceedings.[citation needed]
Bardot, in a letter to a French gay magazine, wrote in her defense: 'Apart from my husband - who maybe will cross over one day as well - I am entirely surrounded by homos.'[citation needed]
On 10 June 2004 Bardot was convicted by a French court of 'inciting racial hatred' and fined 5,000 , the fourth such conviction/fine she has faced from French courts. The courts cited passages where Bardot referred to the "Islamization of France" and the "underground and dangerous infiltration of Islam"[9].
She’s genuine and she has the guts to criticize the ethnic “youths” who riot in Paris each year.
So she hasn’t been using unnatural preservatives to hold back time. I’ll bet Ms Bardot is better company than Ms Pelosi.
