MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY

Thu Dec 20 2007 10:56:57 ET

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper's Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain's aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

MORE

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.

The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.

Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about jounalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.

McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

Dear Norman Bates,

“Of course he’s taking everything very seriously sitetest.”

One doesn’t hire one of the very top criminal defense lawyers in the nation if it’s all smoke and no fire.

“He’s talking with the NY Times, so what?”

Then why lie about it? Here’s a piece from the Breitbart on-line article that I cited previously:

“McCain acknowledged that his presidential campaign aides have had discussions with the newspaper regarding its inquiries.

“’I have not been in talks with The New York Times. They’ve been communicating with our staff and with us,’ McCain said.”

Here’s a bit from politico.com:

“But, McCain said, ‘I have not been in talks with The New York Times.’

“However, Politico has confirmed that McCain himself had one conversation with Times Executive Editor Bill Keller, in which the senator urged him not to go with the story.”

If there’s smoke but no fire, why lie?

Perhaps Mr. McCain has shown us that he’s just insane, and not guilty, by way of a wild overreaction. Or, perhaps he’s guilty of something serious enough to warrant the services of Mr. Bennett.

Only time will tell.

Perhaps this is just smut peddling, sitetest. Until a story is officially released and proven this is nothing but a story about a non-story. Having the aid of an attorney and making comments that you are in discussion with a group is admittance of nothing. I have a lot of respect for you as a freeper. I pray you don't wear it thin.

Big Journalism and Soros were behind McCain-Feingold, and McCain has been in the tank for what Big Journalism wanted ever since the Keating affair went down.

Which has meant that McCain would be toast the moment it suited the convenience of Big Journalism to break out the old Keating files - and meant that it was never in the cards for McCain to win the general election. And that it therefore is a fool's errand to try to elect him by nominating him for the position, since Big Journalism will always prefer the socialist to the merely tolerable RINO.

What’s this a story about whether or not a story about a story may hold up, even though the principles in the story deny its existence?

Must be an election year and the liberals must be writing.

And Drudge must not have better things to do.

Ruh Roh... getting a headache.

Who else was called to intervene re: Campaign Finance, Judges/vetting/gang, amnesty and first amendment internet issues?

Think hard. Nevermind... it may be me.

The NYT “nonstory” is bunk.
Campaign smearing, nothing more.
And grasping at straws at that!
McCain’s hiring of Bennet is just his way of saying, “If that’s the best you got, bring it on!”.

More proof that no other candidate stands a chance against McCain!

Dear Norman Bates,

“Perhaps this is just smut peddling, sitetest.”

I agree. I’ve said right along that there may be nothing to this.

But after saying that it might be nothing, one must also say, “On the other hand, maybe he’s done something wildly scandalous.”

To do otherwise is to refuse to face the true range of realistic possibilities. It's pollyannaish.

“Until a story is officially released and proven this is nothing but a story about a non-story.”

I agree with that. That’s a frustrating aspect of the whole story. We don’t even really know what the allegations are.

What’s puzzling to me is the response of the McCain campaign in this regard. Until the nature of the allegations is known, folks will continue to speculate. I’d think they’d want to get it all out now, to end speculation, and then to start the damage control. It seems to me that WHATEVER the allegations might be, the speculation running rampant has got to be worse than the actual story.

Unless the actual story IS worse than the speculation.

In my view, the failure to get the entire story out there as soon as possible, since it’s going to come out anyway, makes Sen. McCain look guilty, even if he isn’t.

“Having the aid of an attorney and making comments that you are in discussion with a group is admittance of nothing.”

Hiring the best criminal defense attorney in the country isn’t quite the same as hiring an attorney to protect the interests of your good name.

The problem regarding his discussions with the New York Times is not that he’s having them. It’s that he’s DENYING them. That’s worrisome. Maybe he was just babbling when he denied speaking with the New York Times, or maybe he was being deceptive. If he did nothing wrong, it was pretty stupid to deny talking to the Times. But in either case, no one made him make the comment.

“I have a lot of respect for you as a freeper.”

Thank you. I appreciate the compliment.

“I pray you don’t wear it thin.”

Why should you feel that way? Because I consider all possibilities, including the very real possibility that Sen. McCain may have done something that he'd prefer others not to find out about?

Dear Agent Smith,

If this story does help bring down his campaign, it will be bitterly ironic considering how he has used the media in the past to stick his finger in the eyes of other conservatives, Republicans, and President Bush.

If this is a hit job, it’s an evil thing being done. Yet, it’s difficult to muster much sympathy for this “maverick” Republican.

McCain beats Hillary Clinton, Barack Hussein & Johnny Edwards any time of the day. I don’t care which republican (Rino or not) wins the nomination can count on my vote in November.

I predict this event will be a watershed moment in political campaigns for the near future.

No matter what you do to John McCain, he'll always be an American Hero.

God forbid his health should suddenly fail, the backlash on the instigators here are going to be pariahs.

I guess McCain really, really isn't a First Amendment kind of guy.

After all the CFR nonsense and then his attempts to squash political discussion on the internet....now this.
