In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.
President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The House passed the bill by a 314-100 vote after approval by the Senate last week.

That was fast, I heard GW signed it yesterday.
Guess I’m switching to candles. Gotta leave the electricity to the illegals ya know.
pro choice is only with murdering your unborn child not bulb choice.
I thought that the house held 201 republicans, that means at least half of them defected to tyranny. The Pubs also have a majority in the senate that means that the Republican Party in both houses and in the executive branch believe in destroying the free market and imposing the unintended consequences on us the non-elite little people.
Frankly I can see no reason to vote republican: they are weak on the border, they spend more than democrats, they legislate away liberty, they do not believe in free markets nor in individual freedom, they fight a war by telling soldiers not to shoot back and by dropping million dollar missiles on ten-thousand dollar targets, they refuse to impeach judicial arrogance or sedition right in their own chamber. The president lobbies for Arlan Specter, sends his good friend Johnny Sutton to keep border patrol impotent, then there is Harriet Miers... again why should I support this party? We have meet the enemy and they is us.
Oooh, pretty.
NOT!
“Once we are on foot or dependent upon public transportation, the battle for control is over.
It’s scary how many people on this forum clamor for that, incrementally of course.”

Amen and amen! I never, ever believed things could come this far this fast. The arrogance of the ruling class is positively breathtaking, IMO. I believe that we are within 18 months to two years of a major “tipping point” to coin a phrase... Either we’ll begin some serious civil disobedience, or we can count on being a second-rate unit in the UN’s NWO before I turn 70. That’s 12 years from now.
Search keyword "MADD". You'll find a bunch of them there.
well, then guess we go to bed when the sun goes down. after all, I cannot work under those lights.
The size these bills (so called, because WE have to pay for them!) are getting to be, it’s a wonder they didn’t need a dump truck, rather than a Prius, to deliver it.
If they’re so concerned about energy, they could have just emailed it as a PDF document.
“How many Senators does it take to ban a light bulb?”
This is idiotic. I have those new bulbs and they haven’t put a dent in my electric bill, so far as I can tell.
What the heck am I going to heat & cool with now?
I use banks of 10-100W bulbs to give me 100 watts worth of light, and 900 watts of heat.
In the summer, I put them on the outside wall, reverse the polarity, and suck the heat out of the house, and create shade inside.
It’s a damned Commie plot!
-—I guess this means the cops can’t pull me over, taze me and shoot me because my license plate light is out.-—
Incorrect! Our studies have shown that tazing and shooting require almost 17.5% less energy than a sound thrashing.

~snip~

3. rubber, nitrile or latex gloves
4. paper towels
5. cardboard or squeegee
6. eyedropper
7. duct tape, or shaving cream and small paint brush
8. flashlight
9. powdered sulfur (optional)
Anyone know where Congress has been getting their pot lately?
Seems to be some pretty wicked stuff.
Well I figured that is one of the reasons ComEd raised their rates in Illinois. If I was paying $100.00 a month with incandescents, then switched the majority of my bulbs over to the fluorescents, my bill should go down. In fact it did. It dropped about 15%-20%. But ComEd knew that I could pay $100.00 a month. So now I am paying $100.00 a month because their rates went up.
I guess it is kind of like college tuition. Give a kid a $5000.00 grant, then the college can raise it's tuition another $5000.00.
Just so you all know, I throw them in the trash.
I am so sick of congress and politicians! I am just so sick of them all! They are at war with the American people! They are at war with Liberty! They are at war with Freedom! I spit on them all! I spit on them!! Does this sound harsh?? Oh well! They just voted to ban our light bulbs and voted to put us all in little 4 cylinder lawnmowers and God knows what else and why??? Why?? Why!!!??? What else will they ban and mandate??? Why not ban candles!! Why not ban fireplaces!! I am so mad I want to swear!!! Every free thinking American ought to be mad at these stinking pigs!!! We are being surrounded by Fascists that want to blow up our cities and chop the heads off our children and what does our glorious brilliant congress do??! They cut our war budget open our borders try to get Rush fired and ban light bulbs!!!! Ronald Reagan said the Soviet Union was the focus of evil in the modern world! No more!! That era has passed! Today the focus of evil in the modern world is the United States Congress!! More specifically, the Democrat party, aided by traitors calling themselves Republicans that are not worthy of the name!! They are not worthy of that great name!!! I am tired and I am going to bed!! Before I do, I am going out and buy a case of bulbs!!
thanks, bfl
When is Guye Fawkes Day again?
I hope everyone remembers this crap the next time they celebrate the Fourth of July!
The NIOSH standard for organic mercury in the air in a workplace is 0.05 mg/m3. Back of envelope, that's about 26 times the rate at which the mercury in this story "spiked." And we can assume that NIOSH's standard has a hefty safety margin built in to it. Dogs exposed to 0.1 mg/m3 (100,000 ng/m3) for 83 weeks showed no microscopic tissue damage.

Let's not get all Rachel Carson here. Dose makes the poison, and a broken CFL probably isn't going to poison you unless you snort the contents. An industrial accident at the factory? Maybe. A butterfingers moment standing on a chair? Probably not.
