In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.
President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The House passed the bill by a 314-100 vote after approval by the Senate last week.

That could work!!!
Too be fair, Bush signed it. He just wants to make his base sign him off completely. His legacy will be the President with the lowest approval rating in USA history. I am ashamed that, as of the last few years, he doesn't even disappoint me any longer; I almost expect him to make bad moves.
I doubt it, as GE also sells incandescent Reveal light bulbs, which I have been stocking up on.
“Don’t worry folks. Congress is smarter than you. They know best.”
When is the last time Congress actually did anything to help the nation? I mean to really make things easier and improve the lives of ALL Americans not just special interest groups?
Congress just banned the lights on our Christmas tree!
The people who voted for this bill should be committed to insane asylums.
I would like the 315 wizards who supported this insanity to list all of the applications of the incadescent bulb that they just outlawed in 7 years! Morons??????
Thanks!
What isn’t prohibited is mandatory.
“What is this CHINA?”
In China they are afraid of a revolution, so they listen to the people. Our masters have lost their fear.
They're already in an insane asylum. It's called the U.S. Government.
LOL.
Actually, you'll probably be able to get some kind of LED bulbs for your fixture, which may look more like a candle flame than the bulbs you're now using.
Still, I hate the light from fluorescent bulbs, and I am wary of the poisons they may contain.
Exactly. This would not have passed a Republican Congress.
Someone needs to set up a web site that is a lifetime bulb supply calculator like the BMI Calculators. You type in your age, expected life expectancy, number of light bulbs you have, and it tells you how many you need to last the rest of your life.
once upon a time we thought GWBush could have rivaled Reagan.
Now, he rivals clinton and carter.
Correct.
I have apparently wasted at least the last decade by not looking for a place to live where one could drink, smoke, run with scissors, not wear a seatbelt, play poker and own lightbulbs among a thousand other formerly innocuous, simple pleasures.
Silly me.
I don't know why yours are not lasting that long. I have some that have lasted a really long time in a light light fixture that is on at least 8 hours a day. I can't tell you exactly how long but if it wasn't a lot longer than the incandescent ones I wouldn't bother. The one fixture in question has 5 bulbs in it. That is 5 60 bulbs I used to use to 5 14 watt ones now. 300 watts to 70 watts. Plus I don't have to change them as much in that fixture. But for the rest of my house I use the old bulbs since they are not on as much.
But I have to say this is a stupid law by congress. They didn't have to ban these bulbs to get people to use them. All they had to do is let you write them off and they would have gotten a lot of people to switch on their own. But they will lose money doing that from the write off. Now with a ban coming they will get more tax dollars since these bulbs cost more. Funny how that works. You don't think they thought about that before they did this law do you? ;)
who wants to put a mercury laden light bulb into their oven? Are appliance light bulbs with mercury heat resistant to 500 degrees farenheit? Will the mercury need to be professionally cleaned up when the bulb implodes due to excessive heat?
Well, when you think about the new toilets that don’t flush anything with one flush and that plug every time someone poops . . .
I love how efficient Congress is. I wonder if they evaluated how much it will cost to replace all the lightbulbs in government buildings in DC.
In a rational world, this law would be unconstitutional. Amendments 9 & 10.
Thank God Hunter and Tancredo voted against this POS.
Roll call vote here.
