Couple forced to take in criminal lodger after he tells court their house is HIS home address

Last updated at 11:47am on 19th December 2007

A convicted criminal has moved in with a married couple against their wishes after giving their address in court as his home.

Shane Sims, 19, has spent the last few days living with Brenda and Robert Cole after he was sentenced to a week's curfew for breaching a supervision order.

But the couple claim the first they knew about it was when Sims, a friend of their daughter, moved in on Thursday - followed by security contractors who put a box in a bedroom to monitor his movements with an ankle tag.

Sims' tag keeps him indoors between 7pm and 7am much to the horror of the Coles, who both have learning difficulties.

Mrs Cole, 47, said: "It's turned our lives upside down.

"He's taken over the whole place. He sprawls across the sofa and he's always in the bathroom when you need it.

"It's an absolute disgrace. They've let a criminal come into our home and there is nothing we can do about it.

"How can he get away with giving false details? Can crooks pick anywhere they like and just move in? Who needs to break into a house when the courts will do it all for you?

"When the men turned up and installed the tag box, I thought it was some kind of a joke. I told them there had been a mistake but they just said it wasn't their problem."

Sims appeared before magistrates last Thursday where he admitted breaching a two-year supervision order imposed for assault.

He gave the Coles' Bristol address as his bail address but the Probation Service did not verify it.

Sims claims he was told he could stay by the Coles' 16-year-old daughter Tanya after he fell out with his father.

He allegedly told Mrs Cole: "I'm staying here until the tag's off. There's f**k all you can do about it. The courts have told me to."

The court said it was looking into the situation but police said they could not act without a court warrant.

Sims said: "I said 'I'll be gone before Christmas' and I will be. I can't see what the problem is. They keep changing their minds. I don't even want to be here."

A spokeswoman for South Gloucestershire Council, whose social workers care for Mr and Mrs Cole, said: "We are seeking legal advice and doing all we can to resolve the situation."

The Coles both have learning difficulties and are being raised by social workers themselves. Lovely. Left wing lunacy at its best.

Yes....a stark illustration of Socialist control over the lives of people.  As they are apparently, to some degree, wards of the State, their lives and their wishes are irrelevant.

All the more reason to protect our own Bill of Rights, under massive assault by the democrat party.

For all you scholars out there, this case (if in the USA) would fall under the forgotten Third Amendment (involutary quartering) I believe. Up to this moment I thought this was inviolate, unlike all the other massively desecrated first ten Amendments.

Never underestimate the evil of socialists/liberals/democrats.

I’d invite my mother-in-law over. She would shoot him.

It’s like the plot for a low budget movie.
I suggest Rob Schneider for the lead role.

Hey kids: if you want to take an extended trip to the UK, but you don't have enough money for months of rent, just put down some random Englishman's address on your visa application.

He can't throw you out!

Any effort on the part of a British Subject to assert "ownership" or "dominion" over his domicile will quickly be found to be in violation of 'human rights laws'.....particularly when the space is required for State use.

Great Britain Ministers beg judges - don't jail any more criminals! (prisons are full)

This could be fun. Just spray him with meat & let some vicious rottweilers (family pets) stay in the room with him.

First off, I would wipe that punk-ass look off his face by burying a pipe wrench in his skull. Then I would throw him in the car and drive him 50 miles outside of town, in the middle of nowhere, and leave him there.

Government enforcing the rights of criminals against honest people. Where’s the news here? No surprise at all. Their fascist government won’t let normal people protect themselves against criminals.
Therefore the fascist government is on the side of the criminals.

“drive him 50 miles outside of town”

In England, that’s just another town (a few towns down).

On the plus side, I see a booming market for blokes selling addresses to us yanks. I just got one I’ll be staying at next year:

6969 Dimple-on-Chodesrump
Nether Fluffington

It sounds wonderful.

I wonder what would have happened if he had listed his address as 10 Downing Street?

The issue would have been instantly cleared up and it never would have gotten to the Press.

And.....all associated 'managers' in involved agencies would have been promoted (although I'm guessing that this will still occur in this instance).

I think I could pretty much guarantee that somebody foisted on me would quickly wish to live elsewhere. Pickled eggs, cheap beer, and leftover chili. For breakfast. I ain’t a bachelor fer nuttin’.

If they want to eat lead (pipe) they can have my address.

Considering how prisoners in the UK are treated with nearly Royal reverence (color TV, cigarettes, toilets facing Mecca, etc.etc)., I'm guessing that any such entirely justifiable violence visited upon this trash, such as what you suggest, would be rewarded with a thousand-year sentence for you and your family, to serve as a warning to anyone who should dare to assert Capitalist constructs such as "home ownership" or "self defense" against the Socialist Deity.

Damn, this article makes me mad.

My apologies, although it had the same affect upon me and, judging by other posts here, many others.

My feeling is that the more people who become angry over such matters the better, as it will hopefully improve the chances of having changes made at election times.  Our British Friends deserve far better than this.
