Tancredo to make "major announcement" Thursday on GOP bid (dropping out?)

DENVER(AP) --- Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo says he will make a "major announcement" Thursday about his long-shot campaign but did not say what it would be.

Tancredo, a congressman representing the southern Denver suburbs, scheduled a news conference in Des Moines.

Tancredo has consistently polled at the back of the seven-person GOP field. He has based his campaign on opposition to illegal immigration, running television ads that link lax border security to terrorist attacks, rape and other crimes.

The Tank dropping out would not be a surprise.

IIRC his whole point of entering was to get the Illegal Immigration wave, wait scratch that - The Illegal Invasion - to the forefront of the 2008 election. He's done that and done it well (IMO).

And I'll bet the farm he WON'T endorse Rooty, aka 'Mexico's Mayor'.

another Neo-Con that could not withstand the Ron Paul Revolution, especially after the Ron Paul Surge, the $6 Million dollar in 1-day candidate

with Tancredo out of the race, it will give Ron Paul more time in the debates to hammer away real Conservative values

Tanc has been marginalized by the so-called front-runners and GOP establishment (even banned from the White House)

Why should he throw his endorsement behind one of them.

I hope he does endorse Hunter - the message being, we need to elect a complete conservative and reject the RINO establishment wing of the party.

Rather more typical, especially for a retiring Congressman, to keep his mouth shut on endorsements. You wait until after the writing is clear on the wall and then make . . . the attempt to be appointed ambassador to Tahiti errrrr, offer your endorsement to the nominee.

If he’s dropping out why make the announcement in Iowa? On the other hand I guess it could be in Iowa if he’s announcing his support for one of the other contenders.....

14 Days and Iowa kick off the selection process for real. The stragglers are getting further behind with each passing day.

I would literally be shocked if he endorsed Fred. It would be very un-Tancredo like.

Thompson is the only polling Republican that's been consistently tough on immigration. Notice I said 'polling' meaning double digits. I'm NOT trying to take away from Duncan Hunter whom I admire.

But if it were me, and if I were where Tancredo and Hunter have consistently been in the polls, that would be the choice I'd make. His one issue is immigration. And he's sincere on it. To endorse someone who hasn't shown any better polling than he has would be a waste. I just don't see Tancredo throwing all he's fought for into the wind.

Hope he endorses Huckster, so as to effect ‘guilt by association’.

I could be way off, but my prediction is that he's dropping out and endorsing Thompson.

I don't think he'll be giving his support to McCain's stalking horse but we've seen a lot of strange things so far.

If the presumption among the candidates is that he'll be dropping out, I imagine that his phone if ringing off the hook right now with lots of nice offers of cabinet positions. Can't get better immigration creds than having Tancredo in your corner.

You get to pull for a moderate and pretend he is a conservative. And spew dingbatisms at those supporting the real conservative. That sounds like fun!!

LOL - that is like saying he coldn’t withstand the Obama fund-raising.. btw, how is Paul doing in the national polls, 3%.. 4%.. wow, impressive.. I hear he is tied with Alan Keyes for last place in a recent one.. and Alan didn’t have to court the neo-nazis and 9.11Troofers.
