DENVER(AP) --- Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo says he will make a "major announcement" Thursday about his long-shot campaign but did not say what it would be.

Tancredo, a congressman representing the southern Denver suburbs, scheduled a news conference in Des Moines.

Tancredo has consistently polled at the back of the seven-person GOP field. He has based his campaign on opposition to illegal immigration, running television ads that link lax border security to terrorist attacks, rape and other crimes.

Well, while I agree with that definition of Ron Paul, I don't see it applying to Hunter. I see him, like Tancredo, staying in for the chance to broker their beliefs. Tancredo, being a one-issue candidate, is the natural 'first-one-to-go'. But Hunter will not be that long behind him. He MAY make it to New Hampshire. But after that? Huh.

You don't think Paul is in this to further his beliefs? He's the only one succeeding in that as far as I can see. It's down right surreal watching those anti-war crowds cheering tax abatement and small government speeches. It'll actualy be a very positive thing if it sticks. Especially since the Republican party seems to be drifting back to its Rockefeller roots.

I think Hunter will drop after SC. I predict after Super Tuesday there will be only Rudy, Romney, and Paul - and Paul will not have any delegates.

Rudy and Romney are likely to drop out the day after Super Tuesday, if not before. Things are going downhill fast for Romney and are looking absolutely horrible for Rudy.

Maybe. But there's no such thing as a vacuum. Where do the votes go? Someone on another thread about this suggested that Rudy could throw his endorsement to McCain. Imagine that?

And Hunter was chairmen of the Armed services committee, with a larger budget than ANY state or city run by the supposed ‘executives’ in this race.

LOL. Being one of 435 Congressmen, even as chairman of a committee, doesn't mean that you are an executive or a manager. Congress authorizes and approves the budget. It doesn't execute it. The only thing a Congressman surpervises is his staff.

Rudy’s to McCain I can see.
Romney will be in it at least through Super Tuesday. And, to me, his endorsement would be a toss up. My bet though, would be it would be Huckabee, if it were to happen.

No. Hunter also has been writing the defense budgets, not just voting on them. A far, far, far more important and critical task than ANYTHING Rudy has done....ever.

I have no idea..... Strange things happen in politics and this announcement may not even be about an endorsement. I really am lost as to why he’d make any major announcement in Iowa about dropping out unless it’s to also endorse one of the remaining candidates that is in contention there.

The announcement maybe about something else altogether and he’s using Iowa as a backdrop in an effort to bolster his struggling campaign....

Super Tuesday IS the end for Rudy and Romney.

Neither has any issue they're promoting, just personal ambition. As soon as they find out they have no chance, they're out. That's Super Tuesday at latest.

We will agree to disagree. Rudy and Mitt will have a sizeable number of delegates to use to influence the outcome. Most of the GOP primaries are not winner takes all, which means that they will be getting delegates on Super Tuesday. Mitt certainly won't drop out. He has a real shot at the nomination. And I see Giuliani wanting to stay in until the bitter end, especially if McCain tanks.
