Should Alimony Die a Quick Death?
Pajama Media ^ | December 19, 2007 | Helen Smith

"...in today’s world, in which women have fought for the right to equality, alimony seems more like a kid getting an allowance from daddy and I believe it should be abolished altogether except for extremely dire circumstances where a spouse is older, cannot work at all, and for only a short term period. No man or woman should be held to being a slave to an ex-spouse after a marriage ends. That said, if we are going to have alimony laws, I believe that men and women should be held to an equal standard under the law."

My debate with the man-haters at work was in jest and in sarcastic counter to their learned hatred of men. Sorry that you were unable to see that.

I am a gentleman and do have basic courtesy.
Though have no need to attempt to prove it.

najida...you do not sound like a very happy person.

I hope that this next year, you will be able to lay down the bitterness that you are holding onto so tightly.

Merry Christmas.

Once the kids are overage the husband can dump his wife.

And which partner overwhelmingly initiates divorce proceedings again? Hint: not the husband.

Would you like some reality to go with your morning coffee?

Darlin’,
The “you’re not happy, you hate men and you’re bitter” put down #47 has been done to death...

Can’t you guys be more original? Or do you have trouble with women who actually can stand up and articulate a debate?

So, here’s the
“I hope that you actually learn to like women sometime before you die” Put down # 256 ;)

And Merry Christmas to you too....
(that I kinda sorta mean that....)

There are different kinds of marriages. Those where two people get together right out of college and one desides to work while the other raises a family. Some where she works as well, and some where they have no kids or one kid. In the first one, the traditional marriage, I think most of us would say that the man needs to live up to his end of the deal regardless of the marriage. That is to say that he started a family and agreed to provide, so he should do just that even if the marraige falls apart.

In almost every other case the two parties should be able to go there own seperate ways when they seperate. Women can make as much as men in most industries. Obviously they can’t in some industries like baseball star. And in many industries they can make far more. Female models almost always make more than men. Female engineers and programmers make more as well, there just aren’t as many of them.

get it all out!

I am not your enemy. Nor do I desire to cause anyone grief.

However.
It is interesting that an attorney came onto this thread and stated his EXPERIENCE. That experience has taught him that men are the ones most likely to get the worse deal in family courts.

It is interesting that NOT one of the three of you ladies has wanted to debate his FACTS. Why? Because you can’t. The facts speak for themselves! Men lose more often than women. PERIOD.

THAT is and has been my point all along.

You, however, are not wanting to deal with facts, but on personal observations from a limited perspective and based upon your own experiential FEELINGS.

I don't debate "feelings"

You want to make “feelings” the paramount matter, regardless of facts.

So, I made my point.
You don’t like it.
And that’s fine.
But facts is facts.

Now, more importantly, on to your personal story. Not my business. However, it is terrible that people should suffer because of selfishness, foolishness and sin. Those are the three causes of most divorces. I am not assigning blame, again, because it isn’t my business. Nor will I apologize for stating what are known, testable, and provable facts.

That fact remains that in family courts MEN lose more often than women.

Your situation sounds terrible and I certainly hope that improvement awaits your home in the near future.

Again...the same quote as before...
Somebody much wiser than all once said; “It was not that way from the beginning”.

LOL!
Having chickens has taught me what the term “being chicken” truly meant.

However, on my pecking order, the chickens intimidate the cats.

Reading this post I think you two have much in common, now stop and get along.

please. I mean, you wouldn’t want to be CONFRONTATIONAL would you? And you really wouldn’t want anyone to claim you were confrontational when you were not, now would you. I know how that feels.

~laughing~
First time I’ve heard THAT one!

Was THAT your feeble attempt at a put-down?
You OBVIOUSLY don’t know me at all!
That’s not a put-down! That was absolutely hillarious!

I LOVE women! The more the merrier! And have more female friends than men friends!

Nice lame attempt on your part, but I don’t wear the woman-hater tag you want to errantly try to hang on me!

As far as stating that you don’t sound very happy...najida, I am only saying that because you always show up to say the same old man-bashing comments. If you hear the “you don’t seem very happy” comment from others that often (what did you say? 47 times already?)...well...then maybe there’s truth to it “Darlin’”

Regarding your insincere Chirstmas salutaion...well...
another fine example of your unhappiness...
no thanks...keep it...”Darlin’”

I prefer real greetings rather than snotty and insincere empty rhetoric.

You should know better than to hold someone responsible for what they say. Even on FreeRepublic.com

Nice try though.

I agree, but only if the husband is disproportionately at fault for the divorce and if he is the one pressing for it.

Suppose you have a traditional marriage, and the wife decides she is "bored" or "unsatisfied" or just plain falls in love with someone else. I don't think it's fair to expect a man to pay alimony if he wants to continue honoring his marriage commitment and if he hasn't done anything wrong...even if the wife is unprepared to start living on her own.

Of course this scenario may not be all that common with truly "traditional" marriages, but I think it's safe to say that it does happen. I feel the same way if the roles are reversed, and the bad husband decides to leave his good, higher-earning wife.

Like you,
what you say about yourself doesn’t show on these threads.

You go after the most fragile ones who are struggling and use the well overused “I was sitting around a table with a bunch of bull dyke man haters.”

You clearly have some labels you like slapping on females yourself. It goes both ways.

Again, why haven’t you slapped the same labels on the males on these threads?

Deal with it, but you don’t come off as what you say— you post like a man who hates and resents women. So, what I do know of you is what you appear.... and others, besides me, have pointed it out.

Don’t get your knickers in a twist-— just pointing out that your attempts at humor and sarcasm need tags and your true love of women needs to be make a bit more evident for you to be believed.

So erm,
Like you said,
maybe if several say it’s true, maybe there’s a grain of truth to it?

How long did it take you to think THIS one up?! (rolling eyes)
Even if it did happen within the last 50 years, it didn’t happen in the US. Like it has anything to do with anything tht could happen to most of us. sheesh.

With all due respect, why does it matter which side is hurt the most? I think it's safe to say that both men and women suffer under our unjust, corrupt divorce system. As far as I can tell every poster on this thread has acknowledged that. Isn't that good enough?

Arguing about who has it worst or who is the most bitter doesn't serve any purpose other than dividing potential allies. Nobody likes the system we have...why not work together on reforming it so both men AND women get a better deal?

I have plenty of work skills!! They are out of date, and don’t show up so well on an application, but I do my best. Plus my age. Once you’re 50, employers don’t always want to give you a chance.

OR you could make it the woman’s “fault” no matter what she does.
either way.

HEre’s the thing about the toilet seat nonsense that puzzles me. If I, in the course of #1 or #2, flush the toilet, it is well-known that you must close the lid down or tiny droplets of water come blasting out of the toilet, getting a fine layer of waste matter and water on everything.

People almost never stick around for the entire flush, so this means that all people (male or female) should be leaving with the lid CLOSED on the toilet.

This means that EVERYONE must touch the lid at some point. If this is the case, why all the female whining about falling into the toilet. Men DO sit down on the toilet occasionally and I’ve yet to hear a man say he fell in.

I think it’s just a subject with which to bludgeon men about their supposedly poor courtesy, when logic would dictate that both men and women would on nearly every trip be handling the toilet lid and thus avoid any potential for ‘falling in.’

And if you DONT have a lid on your toilet, you really ought to think about getting one.
