The McCain Scenario
The New York Obsever ^ | December 18, 2008 | Steve Kornacki

Posted on 12/19/2007 8:44:09 AM PST by PolishProud

John McCain’s campaign was left gasping for breath this summer, when the Arizonan seemed to run out of money, support and hope.

Since then, the opening has been there for any of the other Republican candidates to put Mr. McCain—this contest’s initial front-runner—out of his misery.

But here we are, just weeks before the first primary votes will be cast, and Mr. McCain has slowly nursed his way back to relevance and a plausible, if not likely, nomination scenario.

It’s a turn of events that says as much about Mr. McCain’s rivals, each of whom seem to be equipped with at least one breakout-killing flaw, as it does Mr. McCain himself.

Rudy Giuliani remains the default choice of the casual Republican voter, the leader in national polls and in most of the big-state contests that will come later in the nominating process.

For McCain? No, not unless next November it is McCain V Hillary, he just is too unstable for me at least.

After he tried to cram amnesty for illegals down our throats?

Won’t change my mind about him or anyone else of that ilk.

I can’t say that I would NEVER vote for McPain or HuckaStupid (in a race against the Hell-Spawned-Beast).

But I sure would hate being in a position of HAVING to vote for one of them.

I've gone from a "never" on McCain to a "well, if I have to"

First, it was campaign finance, designed to limit the influence of grassroots Republicans that McCain blamed for his 2000 loss, then it was the amnesty debacle, NOW he is supporting global warming.

I'm with you, Neo.

My Fred scenario revolves around him picking up supporters from McCain and Hunter when they pack it in. That would boost him to a solid third of the Republican vote shortly after Super Tuesday.

I do see this thing going all the way to the convention.

McCain has no chance of gaining the nomination, let alone winning in the General Election cycle.

All you need to remember is it took this guy a full WEEK to make up his mind to tell John Kerry ‘No, I won’t be your VP candidate’.

You're well off the mark, Badeye. Look a little closer.

McCain delayed a week before saying "no" to Kerry's vp plea to provide a news build-up/anticipation prior to the emphatic "no".

The "no" had much more public ring to it - and putting-down of Kerry - because of this.

(If McCain, had said "yes", Kerry would be President today and McCain, indeed, vp.)

We would do well also to remember that McCain campaigned all-out and big-time for Bush and the Republicans in 2004. And in the process raised over three million dollars for the national GOP.

I’m for McCain. I want a Commander-in-Chief who knows how to fight the WOT. Number one issue. McCain’s been proven right about that.

I think/hope he got the message about border security & amnesty. Anyway he can’t do anything about amnesty (if he wanted to) as POTUS without congressional approval, so that doesn’t worry me too much.

I certainly don’t think he’s crazy or unstable! He’s the wisest candidate running! He’s got the MOST EXPERIENCE & GREATEST KNOWLEDGE of all the candidates! And I’ve heard him in person discuss his plans for Social Security, Medicare & Health Care. He knows what he’s talking about!

AND he polls the best against Hillary & Obama. Makes no sense to vote for anyone else.

I’ve been looking at this guy since 1977. I know what I’ve seen.

Sorry.

I think McCain flirted with being Kerry’s VP because of his personal animosity towards Bush. I don’t think he ever seriously considered it.

Yes, I think in his own way McCain was hoping Bush would lose. He still bears a grudge from 2000.
