NEW YORK Russian President Vladimir Putin was named the Time magazine "Person of the Year."
Richard Stengel, Time's managing editor, said the 2007 honor went to the Russian leader "for an extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability."
Others in the running for the honor included Nobel Prize-winner Al Gore and author J.K. Rowling

Utterly ridiculous. Watch for Pootin’ to get next year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
Some days it just doesn’t pay to get outta bed.
Time is saving the beast for next year, and will announce in late October, just before the election.
Looks as if the Russians have set up an embassy and listening post right here on FR.
Oh, that’s right, you’re just a cultural attache.
Yeltsin, was Putin’s boss, and his right hand guy. They bated the idiot companies to come in, and then Putin lowered the boom once the fields were fully developed.
Putin is, simply put, the return of a new totalitarian regime for Russia. I noticed you didn’t comment about his interference in the Ukraine and Georgia, which cannot stand the Russians. You didn’t comment about how the Russians choked off the gas supply to the Ukraine, much the same way they did in the thirties when the essentially blockaded them and starved them to death.
He’s a scumbag of the first magnitude. Here in the civilized world, justice is done in courts of law. Contracts are challenged as to their legality. Putin confiscated private property on behalf of the state.
He’s the return of Uncle Joe, just a kinder gentler variety.
And by the way, how come Russia isn’t a smoking hole right now? After all of the crap your government fed you about how dangerous Reagan was and how the west was waiting to bomb the USSR into the stone age, when the USSR fell, how come it didn’t happen?
Russia used that excuse to kidnap all of Central Europe for decades. You want to talk justice? Justice would be Kazakhstan heaving all its missiles at Moscow for the freedom and blood it extracted from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Lituania, etc.
Thankfully, Communism is the Pet Rock of economic systems. Even Brezhnev advised Nassar not to go to a collectivist economy as the USSR had.
Now, if you back this thug, you’re simply a fan of totalitarian rule - stability through fear.
You have fun with that. But don’t peddle any of it around here.
All the murdered reporters apparently don’t bother Time. Yeah, great “leadership”!
leaves one speechless. one can only assume an ulterior motive on Time-Warner’s part, presumably economic.
Tomkow that why Bears sucks this season you have Vlady as QB
“Putin is a nationalist and its too bad we dont have a leader like him in the White House.”
Yes and no, and I agree the multinational corporations who had hoped to lock up russia’s natural resources are the big losers with Putin. He is most certainly a nationalist in that sense, and ON THIS TOPIC ONLY I would tend to be sympathetic.
That said, I do not want someone in the white house who blatantly has critics murdered, jury-rigs elections by restricting who can run, etc. That would be a very bad thing. Do you really want this to happen on that scale in the US?
Popular politicians are usually not good for the overall health of a nation.
Is the popularity corporate, the people, the political party.
Popularity means going with the flow and not pizzing off the hands that feed you.
Unpopular politicians are either the ones who accomplish nothing, or have great accomplishments at the expense of other populist movements.
The people of Russia are still very susceptable to being manipulated by dictatorial movements. Because they know nothing different.
“The mix of the gossips and exxagarations. What political rivals Putin has? None. His approval rate is near total.
But if you meant Kasparov as his rival then just think how can guy who even not ethnic russian be the political rival of Putin? Kasparov is the jewish-arminian guy who was born in Baku, Azerbajdzan. He doesnt belong to Russia”
“
Approval rates near total should be a warning sign. I understand Castro and Kim Jung-Il actually have 100% approval ratings.
Numerous journalists and critics of Putin have been assassinated in recent time, both in and out of russia. Would you for a second imagine it possible that Putin is somehow connected to this?
It is my understanding that rules were changed which made some officials unable to run for election in the national representative body. Could you describe those rules and their intent?
I do agree with you that multinationals essentially tried to loot russian natural resources.
raise a toast of polonium to the man of the year.
Time picked Hitler as Man of the Year once.
Time had a North Vietnamese spy on staff reporting on the Vietnam War for “our side”.
Time now has an Austrailian reporter ebmedded with the insurgents in Iraq.
Time-Lies.
Obvious Time cannot way for this KGB operative to revive the cold war so as to call Reagan a failure. Gee, when was the last time I bought a Time magazine? Oh, that’s right, never.

I swear I was SURE this was Scrappleface.
Unbelievable.
I was sure it was going to be Mr. Global Warming, Mr. ‘We’re all gonna die when the icecaps melt’, Aaaaaaaaal Gooooooorrrrrre. Wonder what happened?
That about sums up the year.
A fool gets the Nobel Peace Prize, and a murderer is Time’s “Person of the Year.”
You want a serial killer in the White House?
