I write this Tuesday night from Waterloo, Iowa and I just finished attending a Fred Thompson campaign event. Folks, this is a very different Fred Thompson I saw compared to his rollout in September.
The expectations are gone. The slow start is a distant memory. It has been replaced by a much more crisp, energetic, focused stump speech. The crowd seemed more engaged and rowdy and Thompson had the enthusiasm to match.
He comes out at the beginning of the event an starts cracking jokes like this one:
It was getting so cold in Washington that the politicians have their hands in their own pockets.
Or this one:
Its wonderful to be in Waterloo and I aint here to play the role of Napoleon.
Then he proclaims hes the conservative horse in the race and says energetically, Saddle me up
Now, it would be at this point in September where he would begin to ramble a little bit and lose focus. Not this time. Fred Thompson is on top of his game. No rambling. Hes focused on substance and determined to prove hes the logical conservative choice. But hes doing it all with a smile on his face. He seems very comfortable up there and hes having fun.
Thompson told the crowd, I know who I am and I know what I believe. This statement is at the heart of his campaign. Thompson has always marched to his own tune. The song in December of 2007 sounds harmonious.
It most certainly was. If you can't see or or admit it, you've got a problem.
Remember...he lied about the theology degree. His record on illegals is identical to Dick Durbin's. And his rhetoric on those critical of illegal immigration has been positively leftist.
You are preaching to the choir here, pal. Again, I'm a born-again believer. Huckabee's stated religious beliefs are probably closer to mine than any other candidate. Having said that, I wouldn't consider voting for him to be the GOP nominee. Your noxious comment suggested that all you have to do is wave a cross in front of Christians and they'll blindly march off to the voting booth in lock step. I'm proof that you are WRONG, as are many other millions. In fact, how about you cite for me all of the big Christian groups that have endorsed Huckabee?
I also do not appreciate my original comment being removed. It was not abusive nor offensive to Christians and FR policies should not be abused themselves for politically partisan purposes.
I had no idea it was removed and had nothing to do with it. It was indeed offensive to me as a Christian. I don't think "FR policy was abused for political partisan purposes". I think YOU abused FR with your anti-Christian comment. Again, the comment was NOT offensive because you went after Huckabee - go for it all day. It was because you took a very cheap and ugly shot at Christians.
Morry Taylor? I’m a political junkie old enough to remember all these elections and candidates. Who the hell was Morry Taylor? LOL
Hank
Look for Thompson to pull off a big surprise in Iowa on January 3.
However, I’ll be revived after Iowa.....and I’ll be looking for all the boo-birds to sheepishly do some about-faces.
“No fire in the belly”, my ash!

I noticed also the MSM started to distance from Fred when he took strong stands on the major issues.
Being a Christian Social Conservative one gets used to the attacks. We always make good PC sport. Couple this with my support of Huckabee. Skys the limit.

dear mr. or mrs. or ms. topfile, your... report from weather embadled where ever... makes me a believef r that Fred Dolton Thompson will be and should be the next pressident of the United States.
Presently advises Thompson campaign. Apologies extended before hand. Only human.
Try that again. I’ll promise not to accidently hit the post key twice.

“What is it about Fred that reminds you of Reagan. Not seeing it.”
I did not say Fred reminds me of Reagan. I said that I think Fred is the closest to Reagan of any of the candidates. It is Fred’s straighforward honesty and “telling it like it is”, and his being a real conservative that makes him like Reagan. I actually think that Fred is more conservative than Reagan was. :)
Real conservatives, Christian or otherwise, don't support liberals.
If you had to distill conservatism in one sentence what would it be?
I agree that Huckabee would be a bad candidate. But you characterized Christians as “retards.” Do you really believe that those who follow Christ are “retards.” If so, your perspective is exactly that of the MSM.
Just say NO ! to RINOS .... the clear choice in 2008 is Fred Thompson
Timing is EVERYTHING!
“Mike’s a nice enough fellow, can’t say ‘no’ to anybody. That’s why he’s against a fence on the border and against fences around our prisons.”
Well, we can say NO to Mike Huckabee!
I should just say "I'm not going to raise my hand". However, I might say, "Protection of individual rights and liberties while limiting the power of government".
If Fred had only done this from the beginning...
