Pelosi Says She Miscalculated GOP Determination on Iraq

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., admitted Thursday that she had underestimated the willingness of Republicans to stand behind President Bushs Iraq policy despite the drubbing the GOP took in the polls in 2006.
The assumption I made was that the Republicans would soon see the light, she said. Instead, the minority stuck to the presidents war policy in the face of unrelenting pressure from congressional Democrats and powerful lobbying campaigns by anti-war groups.
Bush has consistently refused to accept any limitations on his authority to direct military operations in Iraq, or on funds destined for the war effort. Democrats have been unable to muster enough votes to force him to accept a timetable for withdrawal of combat troops or a change in their mission in Iraq.
The grassroots are justifiably disappointed and I am too that we have not done more to end this war, Pelosi said.

The Democrats should recognize that Congresss is a quagmire! Pull out! Unfortunately, Pelosi's father didn't pull out.

Pelosi completely misread the 2006 election, or she had also completely forgotten the Dem strategy during same. They ran CONSERVATIVE Democrats which beat LIBERAL Republicans that the right refused to return to the House again. Yes.

It's almost as if he thinks the Constitution states that as President he is the Commander-in-Chief or something. Thanks! It took 64 posts for someone to finally say what you did.

She and Reid have a majority. they can cut funding. They chose not to. Reid does not have a majority, especially when it comes to the war. The senate is split 49-49 with 1 Ind. and 1 Commie. That Independent will vote with the republicans when it comes to the war. Thus, pro-victory=50 and pro-defeat=50. The tie breaker would VP Cheney! ;*)

Pelosi is a FAILURE. Politically she isn't.
After all, she IS the first female speaker of the house.
And, as the first female speaker, she has garnered the lowest ratings in the history of our nation.
...and was still elected via to her district and placed as house speaker by the DNC.
She received 110,989 votes in 2006. That is less than half the votes she received in 2004. She talks/acts like she speaks for the American people, when in fact she barely speaks for her own constituents. To hear her tell it you would think she got 64 million votes.

The grassroots are justifiably disappointed and I am too that we have not done more to end this war, Pelosi said. Those traitors are far more disappointed that the surge is working and that we're now winning the war than anything else. Both sides of the aisle want our troops home, but the Rats want them home with their tails between their legs after a loss. Hurting the GOP is their top priority -- national security be damned.
