U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd says 35-year-old Kai Franklin of Atlanta entered the plea in federal court in Greenville.
Franklin's ex-husband, Tremayne Graham, was indicted in 2003 for conspiring to distribute at least 1,000 kilograms of Mexican cocaine from Los Angeles to Atlanta and South Carolina. After his indictment, Graham ran from authorities for three years until his arrest in June 2006.
Lloyd says that during that time, Franklin paid $14,000 on the couple's mortgage using more than a dozen postal money orders. In court today, Franklin admitted to structuring the transaction in an attempt to hide it from the Internal Revenue Service.
Franklin faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for illegally structuring a financial transaction. She will be sentenced later.
The Atlanta mayor's office declined comment today, calling it a "personal matter."
Former mayor's son spotted by police riding around in a stolen car. Former mayor wanted police disciplined for saying so. Former Mayor in Jail. Current mayor's son-in-law in prison (life?) for drugs. current mayor's daughter pleading guilty to money laundering. BUT THEY ALL ARE HARD LINE SUPPORTERS OF GUN CONTROL. I guess when you have criminals in the family, you don't want ordinary folks being able to defend themselves from criminals. Might get family members shot.
I realize that parents have no control over the lives of their adult children, but this is at least indicative of attitudes of these people.
She made a “mistake” of laundering money, much like you would dial a wrong phone number.
I love urban politicians of all stripes. They are so entertaining.
Obviously, character does not matter in Atlanta. For shame that such a family would be anywhere near a position of responsibility for millions of taxpayer dollars.
Well to be honest, "money laundering" is kind of a made up crime. Not enough details to know exactly what she was up to. She might not have known what she was doing would count as "money laundering"
No no no! Character DOES matter in Atlanta. (Just not the way you usually think it should) The Mayor's family is probably typical of the people who votet for her. If the mayor were a white republican with an absolutely squeaky clean family she would NEVER have been elected.
Atlanta - center of hip hop culture (and so so def records)
Oh trust me. She knew. It’s kinda like saying “My husband is living with a stripper but I don’t know for a fact that they are having sex”.
She structured everything to hide it from the feds. Hillary has probably already called the momma and cut a deal “If you guarantee me Georgia, I will call off the dogs when I get elected”.
I'm sure you're right. I was trying to cut her some slack because I don't know exactly what constitutes money laundering - I ran a $10 bill through the washing machine the other day. Does that count?
Just yesterday, someone posted an item stating that the criminal justice system in Atlanta was a total wreck. I wonder why, with the city’s top management so stellar in character!
We've got the same type here.
They go to jail, get out and then get reelected.
No but depositing $9,999 into your account 10 times to avoid Federal reporting on deposits over $10k is a good sign of laundering.
When someone suddenly deposits $100k and you ask where they got it and they answer “I don’t know”, alarms should sound in your head.
I knew someone who was involved in a money laundering scheme. He chose to go to prison rather than explain how he got the money. Unfortunately, one of his friends was all too willing to ‘splain the scheme. It was fun reading. This woman is a piker compared to the guy I knew.
Well you can rest assured that the mayor accurately reflects the values of the majority of the voters. Democracy in action.
Like I said this is an area of ignorance for me. But if this is what she did then she deserves some jail time for rank stupidity if for nothing else :-)
Maybe already said, didn’t read all the comments, but did the word Democrat show up in the article at all? even a (D) before a name?
I know if it had been Republican it would be ‘REPUBLICAN daughter of REPUBLICAN mayor’ or whatever the heck she is.
Of course not (although she is a Democrat)- Kind of like the home invasion suspects' description on the news night befo' last. "One short heavyset man and one tall thin man." I kid you not the word black and the word democrat are almost never used in the MSM to describe criminals, suspects or criminal activity.
Um, Did Shirley ever pay her outstanding parking tickets? I came in late here.
Do they still have Freaknic in Atlanta?
Not that I know of, but I have to admit that I'm not a big fan, so some of her antics might go unnoticed by me.
Not as far as I know. I haven't heard anything about it for years. The influx of out of town criminals (sorry, "college students") made the locals jealous.
