Many evangelicals won't vote for a Mormon for president of the United States for the same reason that almost all Jews would not vote for a candidate (for any office, I expect) who is a member of Jews for Jesus. For Jews, the Jews for Jesus movement is a deceptive attempt to woo Jews to Christianity under the guise of remaining true to Judaism.
Likewise, for evangelicals, Mormons are not "Christians" in the sense that evangelicals understand the term, and by portraying themselves as "Christians," The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is deceptively wooing evangelicals or potential adherents away from Christianity.
Evangelicals see Mormons as trying to blur the line between Christianity and Mormonism, just as Jews see Jews for Jesus as trying to blur the lines between Judaism and Christianity.
In each case, Mormons and Jews would not want to elevate to high office someone who might give legitimacy to a group that passes itself off as something that it is not, and that threatens their own group.

In before the 300+ post count, several pings, and whatever else turns up.
Yea I’m up late, baby with a cold :(
Author of the article got it right, but it’s hard to explain all that to a defensive Mormon with a Temple-sized chip on his/her shoulder.
Another Anti-Mormon bigot telling the truth about Mormonism.
“Why Mitt Romney Can’t ‘Solve’ His Mormon Problem”
What is the “Mormon Problem”?
Every single Mormon I’ve ever met has been a pretty decent person.
I can’t say the same thing about every Protestant I’ve ever met. They are a mixed bag.
Same with Catholics.
Sorry. Hope the baby gets some rest and you too.
My son is Catholic and is voting for Mitt.
So the Mormon and Mitt connection does not ring true for all.
I would rather have Mormon living next door than a christian bigot. There is nothing worse.
I guess you never met Ted Bundy?
I have typed and deleted my thoughts on this in my attempts to come up with the words I wanted to say. Your comment fits me to a "T". So thank you for saying what I wanted to say but with far fewer words. ;)
Did you ever meet a priest who abused children?
I’m surprised Rothenberg didn’t blame Romney for the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
It will be a problem for some people, I suspect, but not for all. I am from a fairly evangelical background and certainly reject the notion that Mormons are true Christians. But because I’m also a Calvinist and believe in predestination, I’m not really worried that giving “legitimacy” to Mormonism would cause the true Church to lose people to Mormonism, and so I’ll vote for Romney because I think he’s overall the best candidate.
Basically, God could use a president who holds many values similar to true Christian values despite a non-orthodox faith to accomplish good in the country without letting anyone those their faith as a result.
Wow, five posts before the “B” word.
I think this guy is right about many people and their views about certain religions. Whether that’s being a bigot or being realistic depends, I guess, on whether you are the one whose religion is being discussed.
Myself, I have zero problem with Mitt’s religion, it’s a trust issue with me. Can I trust him to do what he says he will. Can I trust him that he’s a conservative. Same with Rudi G. They’ll both get my vote if they’re the nominee, but it is a big concern.
Personally, I have grown so tired of these anti-Mormon posts here on free republic. It is not about religious discussion, just a cheap way to attack Romney.
I cant say the same thing about every Protestant Ive ever met. They are a mixed bag.
Same with Catholics.
A lady I know at the rest home I preach at was ripped off for several thousand dollars and other possessions by her drug-addicted Mormon son-in-law. Guess Mormons are a mixed bag, too, hunh?
“Did you ever meet a priest who abused children?”
The odds of that would be pretty slim, since there were so few of those.
Almost the entire problem was ordinary, garden variety homosexuals preying on youths, as they are wont to do.
So you are voting for Mitt because you can’t do anything to help him become “saved” that God didn’t/won’t already try?
Most Mormon priests are still technically children.
Romney lost my vote during the Russert ambush when he said that he favors enshrining special privileges for sodomites into law as “rights.”
