Study Finds Ohio's Voting System Is Seriously Flawed [Wanna Change Votes in OH? Use a PDA & Magnet]

Got a PDA and a magnet? You could switch votes cast in an Ohio election by connecting your PDA to the voting machine.

A study conducted over a two-month period this year found that Ohio's voting systems are seriously flawed. An 86-page report released by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says, "The findings in this study indicate that the computer-based voting systems in use in Ohio do not meet computer industry security standards, and are susceptible to breaches of security that may jeopardize the integrity of the voting process."

When Brunner was campaigning for her office seat, she promised a top-to-bottom overview of Ohio's voting system.

Her findings have broad implications. With the election less than a year away, Ohio is an important swing state, decisive in returning President Bush to office in 2004.

A team of researchers from Microsolve Inc., Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania found critical security failures in all five voting systems used across the state.

The software is problematic, as well. The report found that servers crashed easily. Crashes in 2007 delayed results for hours.

Brunner recommends that all touch-screen machines in Ohio be replaced with optical scan paper ballot machines, so that the results can be more easily verified.

"We know this type of system will work because [many states] already use it," she said.

Brunner was not Ohio's secretary of state when the current voting machines were purchased. When asked why flawed systems were put into operation, she replied, "I'm dealing with the system that I inherited."

Well I guess this means the Dems have been doing the cheating. How shocking. After all, they took the governor and US Senate races in 2006 by wide margins.

Here we go.....these folks STILL think Kerry won Ohio, and Ken Blackwell+Diebold (and probably Halliburton and Cheney) somehow “cheated” on the vote count.

As much as the list hate the voting machines there must be something really good about them.

“Got a PDA and a magnet? You could switch votes cast in an Ohio election by connecting your PDA to the voting machine.”

I call B.S.

Nearly all touch screens are CRT’s (same as TV picture tubes) and touching a magnet will do nothing more than discolor the screen. It would have NO effects on the electronics of the computer unless brought within centimeters of the internals of the computer.

And even then the most likely outcome would be a CRASH of the computer.

Somebody’s smoking something.. And it ain’t cigars..

“It would have NO effects on the electronics of the computer unless brought within centimeters of the internals of the computer.”

Recent studies have shown that through careful manipulation of a strong magnet the individual 1’s and 0’s on the hard drives can be manipulated.

:)

I’m no lefty and I have problems with them too. Because if there is a way to cheat using these computers, it will be the dems that do it. Dems complain about cheating now in order to set the stage to blame us for cheating in the case of any repub wins.

The dems cheat either way. If they don’t win they sue to try and get enough votes reversed so they can steal the election.

No honor, no integrity, and no shame

They put a port on the voting machine so you can connect your PDA? How thoughtful of them! LOL

They mention a pda and a magnet once and then never again in the article.

Put me alone with touchscreen voting machine and a hammer and I can change votes too.

These idiots never cease to amaze me.

A magnet strong enough to effect a computers memory would likely wipe it out.

I thought this too. How would a "magnet" simply alter all of the votes they way you intend them to go? Does magnet=all republican votes by default?

Whoever changed the voting system are either idiots or seriously corrupt. You could do much better with pencils and Scan-trons where you mark a little circle next to the candidate you want. Integrity of the voting process is the number one priority. Period.

The solution to all these problems is double entry bookkeeping. The electronic ballot boxes need to print out a paper ballot that the voter can check for accuracy. He then drops it into a standard ballot box on the way out. Then if there is a question, there is a cross check. Simply see if the two tabulations agree.

“Here we go.....”

Now now....while it is true that lib/dems are really hung up on the past, this is just a bit of theater and whining so they will be ready when they lose in ‘08.

Hmmmm ..?? No wonder the dems got upset when they didn’t win in OH. This is exactly the flawed kind of system that’s ripe for their kind of cheating.

“A magnet strong enough to effect a computers memory would likely wipe it out”

I was being sarcastic pointing out the fallacy of the argument. A magnet is how the data is put on a computers hard drive. A magnet wielded by a person is grossly oversized and people have a hard time reading magnetic fields and working out the calculations in their head to determine where to put a 1 and where to put a 0.
