Shot in Boston, with a cast of 42, it's a wonderful Kwanzaa

December 16, 2007

While the Christmas film has been a staple of American cinema since George Bailey discovered it's a wonderful life, the African-American holiday of Kwanzaa, observed from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 each year, has been around for only about 40 years, and the cinematic pickings are much slimmer. That's why a Boston-based independent filmmaker believes he's breaking new ground with his movie.

"Kwanzaa with the Jones's" will have its premiere Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline. The film is the work of Jibril Haynes and Nicole D. Parker, both of Dorchester, and their Origin Nile Films. It was shot in and around Boston with a cast of 42, most from Boston, and a score that features local musicians.

"It will be an exciting night because even the cast hasn't seen it yet," said Haynes, 34, who directed the film with Parker, based on Parker's screenplay. The film tells the story of a wealthy, and apparently flourishing, African-American family in the suburbs. Each member, though, has issues that set him or her apart from the others, and the family is largely ignorant about its heritage. A friendly spirit comes to the father in a dream, showing him how the seven principles of Kwanzaa can help him to better nurture his family.

Haynes said that thanks to support from former Boston Celtic M.L. Carr, he will also premiere his film in Brooklyn, N.Y., Philadelphia, and Atlanta.

The Boston premiere of "Kwanzaa with the Jones's" is open to the public, and tickets are $10.

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a convicted felon who now teaches ethnic studies and Marxism at Cal State in Southern California.

In 1971 Ron (sic Maulana) Karenga, Louis Smith, and Luz Maria Tamayo were convicted of felony assault and false imprisonment for assaulting and torturing two women from the United Slaves, Deborah Jones & Gail Davis. A May 14, 1971 article in the Los Angeles Times described the testimony of one of the women: "Deborah Jones, who once was given the Swahili title of an African queen, said she and Gail Davis were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton after being ordered to remove their clothes. She testified that a hot soldering iron was placed in Ms. Davis's mouth and placed against Ms. Davis's face and that one of her own big toes was tightened in a vise. Karenga, head of US, also put detergent and running hoses in their mouths, she said." They also were hit on the heads with toasters.

At Karenga's trial, the question arose as to Karenga's sanity. It is theorized that Karenga may have had a mental breakdown due to the stress of dealing with the violence and murders surrounding his United Slaves (US) organization and the Black Panther Party (BPP). His behavior became bizarre. And, at his trial, a psychiatrist's report stated the following: "This man now represents a picture that can be considered both paranoid and schizophrenic with hallucinations and illusions, inappropriate affect, disorganization, and impaired contact with the environment."

Nobody celebrates Kwanza. The only people keeping this holiday alive are the white Christian-hating elitists who want to wipe Christmas off the calander.

Kwanzaa is a joke and I know NOBODY that takes it seriously. In fact, I can even disrespect it in my otherwise PC workplace. The reason is simple: As you pointed out, it was created by a man in 1966, Dr Maulana Karenga.

What that means is that when I disrespect Kwanzaa, I am not disrespecting a people or a religion. I am disrespecting the equivalent of the Rush Limbaugh Bake Sale. It is not a politically or religiously protected thing. Sure, there are people that would be offended if I disrespected either event, but neither event (or belief) crosses the line into the politically or religiously protected.

And Kwanzaa IS pretty funny, actually.

Check this out from Ann Coulter:

KWANZAA: HOLIDAY FROM THE FBI

http://www.anncoulter.com/cgi-local/article.cgi?article=93

Coulter:

“It is a fact that Kwanzaa was invented in 1966 by a black radical FBI stooge, Ron Karenga, aka Dr. Maulana Karenga. Karenga was a founder of United Slaves, a violent nationalist rival to the Black Panthers and a dupe of the FBI.

“In what was probably ultimately a foolish gamble, during the madness of the ‘60s the FBI encouraged the most extreme black nationalist organizations in order to discredit and split the left. The more preposterous the organization, the better. Karenga’s United Slaves was perfect. In the annals of the American ‘60s, Karenga was the Father Gapon, stooge of the czarist police. “

Kwanzaa movies should be all computer generated graphics and the dialog should be done in Esperanto.

A made up holiday should be consistent

What is it a holiday for? What does it celebrate (other than the fact that you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time)?

No culture celebrates a harvest festival in the dead of winter.
“Kwanza” is a currency in I believe Kenya.

I cringe everytime I see this “holiday” on a calender.
