Matthew Murray has given us another reason to renew the ban on high-powered assault weapons.
Murray was the troubled young man who killed four people last Sunday and injured others at religious organizations in Arvada and Colorado Springs. Almost exactly a year before the rampage, he purchased an AK-47 assault rifle and a large shipment of ammunition. Less than two months later, he purchased another.
He was armed with a Bushmaster XM-15 assault rifle, the kind used by military and law-enforcement personnel, during his killing spree in Colorado Springs. He also had handguns. The AK-47 assault rifle was found in the trunk of his car.
Such extraordinary firepower is not meant for hunting animals or target shooting. We see only one other purpose. And so did Murray.
The gun control debate is tricky, and emotional. But Congress should move quickly to re-enact a federal assault weapons prohibition.

Right on cue, it’s the antigun whores.
Instead of reporting on the obvious merit of having armed people in the church who could stop this murderer, the Denver Post recycles the same old anti-gun mantra that will never stop the law-breaker bent on murder. They will never learn.
Bet you 10 bux that the shooter didn’t have either one of those model rifles.
I can only pray the Dumocrats will take this (expletive deleted) advice. We nailed them good the last time they tried this idiocy, I’m ready for round two. Bring it on.
I’m not going to be quite as brazen (or stupid) as to directly blame Hillary and her type for the recent attacks and murders...
BUT...
Isn’t it awfully convenient how every time such anti-gun sentiment seems to move to the back burner (no major issues since the assault weapons ban expired for example)...and the liberals want to bring it back up, it seems to always be accompanied by some act of violence that they can hang their coats on?
>Bet you 10 bux that the shooter didnt have either one of those model rifles
Bet you 20 the writer doesn’t know the difference.
Well duh! Notice the moron didn't say crime went down. The stupidity of these people never ceases to amaze.
They don’t even consider that the weapon used to *stop* the massacre was also “an assault weapon” under the stupid old law.
“Frankly, we can’t figure out the benefits of having assault weapons easily available. Law enforcement officers universally agree that people wanting self protection don’t carry assault weapons. But criminals do.”
This is an outright lie.
Yeah, there's that whole 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution thing, you know.
And on Global Warming, scientists are in copmplete agreement.
Funny, my Dad was a LEO, and he thinks that guntrol is BS.
Well, they are basically shooting off their mouths and showing how little they know.
Just ask them what gun is responsible for the most gun deaths in America.
SKS?
AK-47?
45 caliber?
bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzztttt....... (game show loser buzzer)
Answer: 22 caliber.
And unless you’re like a leprechaun or something, that’s not exactly an assault weapon.
Honestly, between the events in Colorado and Omaha, this sentiment is probably reflected in much of the voting population. Face it, most Americans don't own "assault" rifles and have no desire to. Furthermore, people are really sick and tired of disturbed young men marching in to a public place armed to the teeth and taking out as many innocent people as they can before putting a bullet into their heads.
That being said, I fail to see what a ban on assault weapons will accomplish --other than putting another "feel good" law on the books. Even during the Clinton ban, I still saw plenty of assault weapons in the local gun stores.
Finally, when you have a depressed kid who has a plan to kill himself and "become famous" with a body count, preventing these crimes are virtually impossible. Mass killings followed by suicide are rare but they are not a new phenomenon nor are they uniquely American.
Well duh! Notice the moron didn’t say crime went down. The stupidity of these people never ceases to amaze.”
This has also been the same period during the amazing increase in Concealed Carry Permits. Crime dropped during the whole period, but crime with so called “assault rifles” has always been so rare that statistics about it are virtually meaningless.
“That being said, I fail to see what a ban on assault weapons will accomplish...”
1. It undermines a major purpose of the 2nd amendment by reducing the most militarily effective arms owned by significant numbers of Americans.
2. It legitimizes the idea that the 2nd amendment is meaningless and can be violated with impunity by the federal goverment.
3. It helps to “freeze” the military technology available to the ordinary man, thus setting the stage for eventual obsolescence through technological advance.
4. It limits the choices in self defense and makes self defense against multiple attackers more difficult.
Attacking the legitimacy of self defense is a major strategy of the anti-freedom forces.
There, now I hope that you see some of the things the proposed legislation would accomplish.
I can see all of these things. I have no doubt that the "elite" in this country would prefer assault weapons be banned for all of the reasons that you point out. These recent shootings are only a means to try and sell such a ban to the general public --many of whom would gladly support it.
I don't see it as being in the cards though. Politicians learned a painful lesson the first time they enacted this ban. They are not likely to repeat it.
Fidel is Proud. The useful idiots have migrated eastward to San Fran East.
Nor care. He’s safe behind a locked door and armed guards anyway.
