Mitt Romney stepped up his attacks on GOP rival Mike Huckabee on Saturday, saying his statements that the Bush administration's policies overseas demonstrate an "arrogant bunker mentality" sound like they're coming from a Democrat.
Huckabee wrote the comments in the January-February issue of the journal Foreign Affairs, where he said President Bush's approach has been "counterproductive" and urged a shift in diplomatic tone.
"I had to look again," Romney said in Humboldt, Iowa. "I said, 'Did this come from Barack Obama? Or from Hillary Clinton? Did it come from John Edwards?' No. It was one of our own. It was Gov. Huckabee.
"He said the Bush administration is guilty of an 'arrogant bunker mentality' that has been counterproductive here and abroad. I simply can't believe that. I can't believe he'd say that. I'm afraid he's running for the wrong party. The truth of the matter is this president's kept us safe these last six years."

Religious Conservatives are extremely influential in the primaries. Pat Robertson probably endorsed Rudy because of his heroic actions on 9/11.
From the book, Reagan In His Own Hand: 1975 Reagan radio address:
"Eight years ago when I became Gov. I found myself involved almost immediately in a controversy over abortion. It was a subject I'd never given much thought to and one upon which I didn't really have an opinion.
I did more studying & soul searching then on any thing that was to face me as Gov.
I knew there will be disagreement with this view but I can find no evidence whatsoever that a fetus is not a living human being with human rights."
In 2006 the Weekly Standard's Fred Barnes wrote the following:
"In his first year as California governor in 1967, the legislature passed a bill to legalize "therapeutic" abortions. It was an issue Reagan hadn't thought much about and he was torn over whether to veto the measure. Many Republicans in legislature strongly urged him to sign the bill. And so did aides on his staff, including conservatives Ed Meese and Lyn Nofziger, who later followed Reagan to Washington. Reagan was assured it would result in only a handful of abortions.
His instinct was to veto the bill and the Catholic archbishop of Los Angeles urged him to follow that course. But he signed it into law. Reagan was disturbed by his decision, however, and continued to think long and hard about abortion. The bill, according to Lou Cannon in Governor Reagan, "permitted more legal abortions in California than occurred in any other state before the advent of Roe v. Wade." Reagan's worst fear was realized."
Right after Reagan's death in 2004 Barnes wrote:
"Within a year after signing the abortion bill, Mr. Reagan told political writer Lou Cannon that he'd never have done so if he'd been more experienced in office. It was 'the only time as governor or president that Reagan acknowledged a mistake on major legislation,' Mr. Cannon writes in his new book, 'Governor Reagan: His Rise to Power.'"
Reagan was never pro-choice and at no time did he favor abortion on demand, personally or as a matter of public policy. He reluctantly signed a bill that relaxed an outright ban on abortions. He said he signed it out of sympathy for the victims of rape, incest and for those women who may be facing serious health risks. Reagan did not sign it out of political expediency and it didn't take Reagan 30 years to become pro-life.
The California Supreme Court overturned the 1967 Therapeutic Abortion Act, in 1972.
W is the incumbent if you haven’t noticed.
Last thing we need is another rube from AK playing face in the crowd.
The huckster is dead.
... I'm afraid he's running for the wrong party. The truth of the matter is this president's kept us safe these last six years."
Wow. Score this round for Romney--big time. He's not my preferred candidate, but this sort of clear talk goes a long way toward reassuring me should he end up carrying the mantle of the party. Even if Romney didn't mean a word of it, it's just plain smart primary campaign politics to pin the tail of disloyalty and ingratitude on the Huckabee donkey.
Thumb's up, Mitt.
C-SPAN had a teaser for an interview with Mike Dukakis which is being aired sometime this weekend (I think) in which he calls Romney a fraud...the clip is short and he doesn’t elaborate so I don’t know what the basis for the allegation was. Perhaps it was for being a liberal before and pretending to be a conservative now.
There are comments one might make in criticism, but this one was out of bounds
I am not happy with Romney's position on abortion. Nor am I comforted by his only recent change of heart. However, flat out labeling him as a liar because used the adjective "adamantly" when describing Reagan's past pro-abortion position is exactly the sort of internecine bomb throwing that Reagan warned us about.
The career of Ronald Reagan has informed my entire life, and subsequently that of my children. His photo dominates the entrance to my home. However, he is not on the ballot in 2008. His example tells us that we must hold true to our principles. But we must also hold together.
If Romney is the nominee, I will vote for him
Huckabee lost me when I came across this on Drudge. I Love President Bush!!! Darn right he has kept us safe! It is disgraceful that so many of the GOP has shiet on my President.
Now we are down to Thompson, Hunter and Romney
That is true. However, the Legislature has never responded to these constitutional developments. Despite resolutions from the State Bar Conference of Delegates urging the Legislature to repeal the Therapeutic Abortion Act, it remains unmodified in the Health and Safety Code.
What in the name of God was Huckabee’s staff doing when they let this essay get sent for publication? Is there anyone awake there at all? This is an insane comment from a GOP candidate.
Sorry, but not only was Mr. Reagan not ever “adamantly pro-choice,” neither was he ever even “pro-choice” by any meaningful definition of the term.
It’s a lie.
If this was the only time that Mr. Romney had misstated Mr. Reagan’s abortion views, I’d let it slide. But for the entire campaign, Mr. Romney has tried to paint Mr. Reagan’s record on abortion unfavorably on any number of occasions to make his own shameful past look better by comparison.
The repeated falsehoods add up to lying.
It isn’t “internecine bomb throwing” to take note that liar is lying.
Because Mr. Reagan taught us about principles and character, I will not vote for Mr. Romney should he be the nominee in 2008.

Any Repubs out there, supporting Huckabee; canNOT be serious!
“At no point was he adamantly pro-choice. Willard LIED.”
Stttttttrrrrrreeeeeeettttttttccccccccchhhhhhhh.
I believe Petronski thinks that Mitt Romney is flip flopping because he once that 13 years and five years ago he is pro choice. I can understand a liberal not knowing what flip flopping is. They are afterall ignorant. But when a conservative calls someone flip flopping because that person changed his or her mind from 5 or 13 years earlier really amazes me.
Willard’s pro-life “conversion” was when? 2005?
He’s bragged of being pro-abortion in 1970.
That’s 35 years.
Willard didn't stretch the truth. He lied.
Bunk. Willard is exactly the kind of slippery pro-abortion liberal that Reagan warned us about.
Hey, don't say that about chickadees. They are neat birds.
“Jesus says: Ahmadinejad needs a hug.”
say WHAT???
