[10-year-old] Student Arrested After Cutting Food With Knife
Local 6.com ^ | 12/14/07

An elementary student in Marion County was arrested Thursday after school officials found her cutting food during lunch with a knife that she brought from home, police said.

The 10-year-old girl, a student at Sunrise Elementary School in Ocala, was charged possession of a weapon on school property, which is a felony.

According to authorities, school employees spotted the girl cutting her food while she was eating lunch and took the steak knife from her.

The girl told sheriff's deputies that she had brought the knife to school on more than one occasion in the past.

Students told officials that the girl did not threaten anyone with the knife.

The girl was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Can kids at this school have shoe strings in their shoes?

Can the boys wear belts to hold up their pants?

Sharpened pencils make good weapons.

Socks can be stuffed in other kids mouths, etc, etc...

Knives can be used as tools, such as an eating utensil. A stone on your desk can be a paperweight, or thrown as a weapon. This is a total lack of common sense.

I remember one day in Jr. High, word got around that a science teacher who was an amateur archeologist, collected old military weapons, uniforms etc.. He brought in a WW-II Thompson sub-machine gun and we all went to his classroom to look it over and hold it. Imagine that today.

I’ve eaten with a knife and fork all my life...

I always ask foir a knife at picnics etc when they are not offered...

I taught my children to eat with a knife (in the right hand) and fork (in the left hand) and now I teach my grandchildren...

Hello...cultural thing...I would be highly offended if my family member/students were stopped from cutting tough school lunches...

America reminds me of the Roman Republic, just before it became an empire. This is just nuts.

Utter and complete lunacy and a perfect illustration of how people in authority will use the laws senselessly but in any way they can to aggrandize their power.

Back in the day it was common for several of the neighborhood boys to take our BB guns and pellet guns over to the abandoned gravel plant and shoot up whatever we could. We’d walk through the neighborhood, there and back, with our “deadly weapons.”

Here in the boondocks where I live, in California, it is still a common sight to see kids walking down the road with BB and pellet guns. Sometimes with .22 rifles. Of course this is a very rural area, with the lowest crime rate in the entire state.

Why do people tolerate such asinine policies?

They don't, necessarily.

However, the "authorities" will ignore the ordinary citizens until a goodly percentage of them start sabotaging the "law" and administer justice to the bureaucrat public servants masters as a group. Then they pay attention while incandescent with rage toward the citizenry.

I sometimes wonder with all the rules and P.C. bullcrap kids have to follow today, how they even make it through a school day.

The public school systems today are run by people who have no common sense to make the slightest adult decision. They're imbeciles.

What do you expect? Teachers run schools like prisons. It is only natural that using a knife to cut your food wouldn’t be allowed in a high security prison. Why should it be allowed in a school? /sarc

As Newt Gingrich succinctly put it: “modern, bureaucratic, unionized education is a form of intellectual child abuse.”

sending your child to public school is prima facie child abuse.

Funny, I can't think of a thing to disprove that allegation.

These schools are Communist breeding grounds. If she came into school with condoms and promoting the ‘gay’ lifestyle, she would have been applauded.

Who needs the Taliban when we have schools like this?

What's to assess? And who's paying for the "assessment"? When is somebody going to "assess" all the idiots who perpetrate this crap?

I support flogging for the school employees who caused all of this.

Nope. Let the punishment fit the crime. Puncture them all over with the steak knife. Let each kid at the school have one poke at each guilty adult. Give the adults a chance to beg each kid for mercy, and let each kid decide whether to grant said mercy. Remind the kids that these adults don't believe in applying common sense when making decisions, and that these adults have also taught them that they must respect the beliefs of others, no matter how bizarre.
