Philadelphia is 80% Democrat.

At least 10% of them are dead.

"I predict the BSA will take the City for a pretty sum for violation of the contract. Hope so anyway."

I would like to see that, but am not optimistic. Our local BSA council is pretty beaten up already. A few years ago, the local United Way reneged on funds which were earmarked for the BSA. This has created huge financial pressure for the local organization, and has made it increasingly difficult to staff the offices, maintain camps, etc. etc. This isn't an organization with a huge legal defense fund and an army of lawyers on its payroll.

The Cradle of Liberty Council is a merged council. There once was a Philadelphia Council and a suburban Valley Forge Council. Some time ago they were combined into the Cradle of Liberty Council. The combined council provides a lot of support to the inner city through camperships and programs for youth. The suburban troops are financially in better shape, and can carry more of their own weight. However, it takes a lot of money to keep these programs going, and money spent on lawyers is unavailable to maintain camps. There are a lot of scouts in the Phildelphia region, and they are all suffering for this political attack.

I'd like to see some help for the local organization coming from BSA national and from outside the scouting organization. To the extent Phildelphia City Council, United Way of SE Pa, and ACLU succeed in harming the Boy Scouts, other leftists will be emboldened. Ultimately, it's not just about the Boy Scouts.

The queers must be pacified. The city must kick out the Scouts to mollify the queers knowing the contract will be enforced and they will lose.

That way the politicos have a win win. The status quo remains and they get credit from the queers for trying.

I’ve been debating this one on a left-wing log for a while. Basically, from their viewpoint the BSA deserves this because of their horrible membership policies, and while it’s too bad for the kids who are being helped it’s an “important symbolic victory” for gay rights.

If the city can breach their agreement...the Boy Scouts should then be able to take back the granting of the building itself to the city.

One good breach deserves another. The Scouts should reclaim their ownership of the building and put it on the market for fair market value. If the city wants the building, let them purchase it outright. The scouts can track down a more suitable location.

The Philadelphia City Councel deserves a punch in their two faces.

I have been following this case in the Philly Inquirer, and this is the first time I have heard that the BSA built and paid for this building. Funny the Inquirer never saw fit to mention that little fact.

Hmmm... Not that I like the Philadelphia Inquirer, but...

Oct. 18, 2007
"The land belongs to the City of Philadelphia but has been leased since 1928 for that token sum to the scouts, who built the landmark Beaux Arts building."

Dec. 4, 2007
"The Cradle of Liberty Council built the Beaux Arts structure in 1928 on Fairmount Park land that the city agreed to lease to it in perpetuity for a dollar a year.

Perpetuity, however, could not outlast recent U.S. Supreme Court cases holding that taxpayer money cannot be used to support private groups that knowingly discriminate. [...]

Jubelirer said the scouts should not be required to pay additional rent for a building the scouting council built, spent $2.6 million renovating in 1994, and pays $60,000 a year to maintain."

Dec. 8, 2007
"In 1928, City Council passed a resolution giving the scouts perpetual use of just under a half-acre near the Franklin Institute for $1 a year.

The scouts hired architect Charles Z. Lauder and built the structure for a reported $200,000.

Since then, the scouts have maintained the property and building, most recently spending $2.6 million for a 1994 renovation as well as $60,000 a year for maintenance."

Dec 8, 2007
"In 1928, the city gave the Boy Scouts use of the small plot of land downtown near the Franklin Institute for $1 a year. The group constructed the building for a reported $200,000."

If people want to donate to the BSA in Philadelphia, what’s the address?

Boy Scouts in Philadelphia are part of the Cradle of Liberty Council, BSA. Their website is www.colbsa.org.

I'm sure they'd appreciate donations. The offices at the disputed building are:

Bruce S. Marks Scouting Resource Center
22nd & Winter Streets
Philadelphia, PA 19103
215-988-9811

I'm sure a check written to Cradle of Liberty Council, BSA, would be accepted with gratitude.

That’s some pretty hysterical anti-Catholic bigotry you’re harboring there. In fact a great number of BSA Troops are Parish councils. My K of C just had a pancake breakfast for ours’ so that they could retain their Charter. I don’t recall any of the abuse perpetrated by Gay pedophile Priests being done on Boy Scouts. That’s because those “men” are cowards and would not get near a troop because the dads are right there.
