Fred Thompson Wins, Hands Down (Freds' "I paid for this microphone" moment)
American Spectator ^ | 12/12/2007 | Philip Kline

First, let me say that this was by far the worst debate yet. The questions were not only skewed to the left, not only almost entirely neglected foreign policy, but they were so broad as to allow the candidates to fall back on talking points. Also, there was no room for back and forth between the candidates. Absolutely awful.

With that said, Fred Thompson was the only candidate who stood out. He was funny, charming, and peppy. Here was a guy who wasn't afraid to speak hard truths, and who displayed knowledge of the policy issues--especially on entitlements. But the moment of the debate, the moment that will be talked about should he defy expectations and go on to win the nomination, was when he refused to raise his hand at the behest of the moderator. This demonstrated conviction, showed he was able to stand up for his principles, that he was a man who valued substance, a leader rather than a follower, and somebody who is running a different kind of campaign. In short, today Thompson was everything that conservatives had hoped they'd be getting when he announced his candidacy.

The moderator has been called Nurse Ratchet but I think Hillary is a better name for her.

Didn’t realize Janet Reno had any kids in Iowa...what a idiot.

This is scandalous, but not unexpected from a pollster. Manipulating public opinion is down to a sceince, and the pollsters like Luntz are selling their craft tot he highest bidders. NEVER trust polling data or shows of this ‘art’ like Luntz promotes. Polling can be skewed in any direction you want it to come out. What the public doesn’t get is the ‘inner polling data’ which pukes like sinkEmperor clintoon used constantly from Morris, even down to how to tell his lies! Guys like Luntz are selling their souls to the highest bidders, it’s the business they’re in, the slight-of-hand writ large using technology.

What people think of as tax shelters, including tax exempt bonds, generally have a lower rate of return than taxable investments. A taxable corporate bond might have an 8% coupon and a tax-free muni a 5% coupon. The net income after taxes and risk level is factored in is fairly equal.

It is a mystery to me why politicians do not shift everything into taxable investments a few years before their income taxes will come under scrutiny. They would end up with little difference in after-tax income, but they’d look like good taxpayers.

Is there further research being done on Burd by the poster who gave you this info? Can someone be alerted to catch him in the focus group?

Great move by Fred, and a great clip. The media is shutting him out and trying to make him look non-existent. I hope that ceases to work.

The fact that the idiot moderator is doing a Dem debate next will be most instructive for independents who watch both debates. Liberal media bias on display, guaranteed.

I loved seeing Fred shut down the liberal Global Warming question!

Fred Thompson on Global Warming. This is what Fred said when he was sitting in for Paul Harvey. :)

moderating the DEM debate tomorrow. Nice soft questions, probably

And plenty of time to answer, too. I just caught snippets of today's debate, but she looked like a kindergarten teacher and the candidates all looked annoyed. For good reason.

Even more effective if you picture soft doe eyed Huckabee across the table from Ahmadinejad as opposed to Fred.

While I personally agree with Keyes, did you see his feed back lines when he spoken, they were consistently at the bottom. The Republicans just wish he would go away, and the moderates don’t understand anything he’s talking about.

I’m a Fred supporter because he’s a real conservative, he got to the conservative point of view before any of the front runners and is not pandering.

I have no dought that Rudy will kick Islam’s butt, but that’s not all the job entails.

McCain is getting more doddering on a daily basis.

I’ll pass on the Hucksters brand of Christian Political Missionarism.

I have no interest in Romney, for him, a successful billionaire, this is the next hill to climb, he wants to be president for ego’s sake.

Hunter will make a great VP, like Cheney, he has gravitas.

“Mitt seems too slick to me, so slick as to be creepy even. Sorry, Mitt fans. It’s the vibe I continually get.”

I felt that way too, from the first time I saw him talk. He seems to be calculating every sentence for best effect.
