Republican Mitt Romney retorted to questions about his faith by surging rival Mike Huckabee on Wednesday, declaring that "attacking someone's religion is really going too far."
In an article to be published Sunday in The New York Times, Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Religious attacks go nowhere in the Democtatic party. I wonder why.
So you are still peddling that same story, which everybody agrees did not mention scoutmasters? Why don’t you post the transcript next, so everybody can read it and see that he never mentioned scoutmasters.
At least you didn’t claim he was talking about the national leadership.
I already acknowledged that my comment about kids was based on the word “membership” and that I understand that adults can also be members. I said that immediately after the response to my initial post.
I do appreciate though that you didn’t argue that he wanted to FORCE anything on the boy scouts this time.
Why him and not all the candidates?
We are looking at the potential leader of our country. They should be able to handle the heat. If not do we really want them as President?
bump with no comment.
I’m a born-again Christian and I’ve entered into the theological debate on FR re. LDS.
I’ve got to agree with you on this one, Rhombus. The real issue is that Huckabee knew the answer before he so “innocently” asked. His theological degrees included extensive comparative religion course studies. His many years as a pastor surely included this issue.
So, you can conclude he was being coy, disingenuous, petty, and conniving when he asked the question. It was a set-up, and I hope it backfires on him.
He is indeed the Huckster. I’m for Fred.
***How does this question “bash” Mormonism?***
Because any time a non-Mormon questions Mormonism he is considered a basher.
Doesn't say a lot for a faith if it can't be questioned.
Doesn't say a lot for a candidate if he can't explain what he believes in, or why.
Maybe in your heart you feel that way towards LDS and now trying to word it differently.
People of various faiths believe a lot of strange things which might seem disturbing to another.
When deliberately sprung on the whole nation for sensation to get votes is below the belt.
Because if things are taken out of context there really is no opportunity to justify the 30 sec sound bite attack!
Your right to religious freedom is very well respected, please respect the right of others to ridicule those beliefs.
Yes ridicule is a First Amendment right!
Thank you very much for your honesty. I've spent the last 7 years defending evangelicals and born-agains against constant attacks by Democrats and liberals who warned again and again of theocracy and insisted they people were intolerant. Now Huckabee goes and reinforces everything liberals have said about this large group of people that I tried to defend as sincere. This is why I'm so passionate about what Huckabee has done... and no I'm not a Mormon as many on this site have accused (as if that blows away any right to have an opinion). By the way, I'm for the Republican nominee. The only one I probably wouldn't vote for was Ron Paul. Now I have to add Huckabee to that list.
It was on topic.
Huckabee's attack on Mormonism was an attack on Romney. Huckabee's propensity to let murderers go free as governor was based on his religious beliefs.
Regardless, both are RINOs...won't waste a vote on either.
Bears repeating.
I have been disappointed at the number of bigoted statements on FR against Mormons.
#29 was DIRECTLY answered with the very first word in #33.
No dodging. Just a straight up “yes.”
And, resty, it is true that we never once discussed mormonism in my MDiv. It simply wasn’t part of the program.
I can’t even say with assurance that the seminary was offering an elective on cults. They might have been, but I don’t remember it if they were.
I do know that I never took one. There was far too much to learn to go off on a tangent.
I’m a born-again Christian and I’ve entered into the theological debate on FR re. LDS.
LDS on this issue believes that Jesus was a created spirit of a father god, and, by default, brother or sister to every other created being, including Lucifer.
Christians believe that Jesus Christ has no beginning and is God from eternity to eternity.
I’ve got to agree with your political take on this one, Rhombus, that this difference in theology was NOT an innocent inquiry by Huckabee.
The real issue is that Huckabee KNEW the answer before he so “innocently” asked the question. His theological degrees included extensive comparative religion course studies. His many years as a pastor surely included this issue.
So, we can conclude he was being coy, disingenuous, petty, manipulative, and conniving. It was a contrived set-up in an area he should have left to others to debate pro and con, and I hope it backfires on him.
He is indeed the Huckster. I’m for Fred.
What?
People of various faiths believe a lot of strange things which might seem disturbing to another.
So, does that mean we are never to discuss them?
When deliberately sprung on the whole nation for sensation to get votes is below the belt.
How so?
You don't think tougher questions will get sprung on the candidates in the general election? Do you want a candidate who is quick on his feet and can respond?
Unfortunately, I have to go. I will look for your response later.
No, actually. Honest people concede that was the topic. only you Charles are trying to insinuate that because neither children nor scoutmasters were named it must have referred to children. Truly you exhibit verbal and reasoning skills worthy of Mark Morford.
***Because if things are taken out of context there really is no opportunity to justify the 30 sec sound bite attack!***
Well, here is a great Mormon opportunity....
Justify to the Republican Christian Evangelical, at whom these types of statements are obviously meant to sway one way or the other, in what context is it perfectly acceptable for a man who is suppose to be a Christian President to consider Jesus and Satan brothers in the Mormon sense of meaning. Remember that many of these voters are extremely disturbed at the thought of having a cult member Prestident.
Huckster is truly demented in word and deed. All those gubernatorial pardons, and, in the Klinton tradition, he didn't receive a red cent for any of them, did he?
My Baptist friends deserve better than to be associated with this lunatic....
“According to Mormon theology, God the Father lives on a planet with His spirit wives procreating spirit children who await physical bodies to inhabit. As we learned earlier, Jesus is the first son born to Elohim. God the Father had numerous other offspring, which included Lucifer. This makes him a spirit brother of Jesus and of all human beings. Mormon theologian LeGrand Richards writes, “Satan was just as much a man in the spirit world, as were those spirits who have been given bodies through birth in this world.”{9}
