The Most Offensive Xmas Art Show Hits Hollywood
laist.com ^ | 11/28/07

It's sexy, it's sacrilegious, it's scandalous, and it's just in time for Christmas. LA's hottest art curator Lenora Claire has done it again with a new collection of saucy art pieces guaranteed to get folks hot and bothered.

Mixing Christmas themes with ample female breasts...Claire chose not to rest on her laurels of the hugely successful Golden Gals Gone Wild collection of this summer, but instead opted to pump up the volume with a new group of art that's poised to get viewers hot under the collar.

We were lucky enough to interview the Los Feliz curator who will present Merry Titmas at the World of Wonder gallery next weekend...

LAist: The painting of the Holy Mother wearing a Hooters tank top will clearly offend a lot of people. Especially because instead of the Messiah in the manger, it' s a couple dozen hot wings. When exactly did you sell your soul to the Devil?

Lenora Claire: I've always said art much like breasts should be in your face. Since this is a show about art and breasts I started thinking of taking something as classic as a typical nativity scene and giving it a pop twist. I really feel that is the Virgin Mary found herself knocked up today that she would have to go work at Hooters to support the baby Jesus. Like everything I do there are high brow and low brow elements. It's all about subversion.

Sure on one level people are going to be shocked but that is what gets them talking. You can either get off on the humor of it or the bold feminist statement. Or you can be offended. My goal with this show is to stimulate and titillate and I know I've accomplished that.

I went to the article’s website and saw other “art”...now for MicrosoftBleach 1.0

I’m not really shocked as much as I am sickened and saddened. It’s nowhere near as offensive, but at that site there are other examples of the exhibit including a painting of topless cast members of The Facts of Life...including Lisa Whelchel who is one of my favorite Christian writers and a pastor’s wife.

Real art is timeless, not CLASSless.

I googled Lenbora Clair. She’s a 27 year old with “glamour girl” looking to make a name for herself. Don’t bother to help her do it.

She’s got bigger boobs than the actual hooters waitresses.

The only way to get attention if you lack talent is to offend. She’s the brat in school - throwing tantrums to get attention. Only lowlifes are impressed... and Hollywood types. Or am I repeating myself?

Yeah, did this guy have to go into hiding or risk a beheading?

Yes... all religions are equal, blah blah blah.

The Monty Python group specifically avoided mocking muslims in The Life of Brian, not because of timeframe but because they were quite aware of the personal risk to life and limb at annoying Islamic fanatics. I think either Eric Idle or Michael Palin is on record confirming this.

actually this is a major yawn.

It is a PRIVATE art gallery.

It is an enclosed space.

It is not using taxpayer money.

It not like we are islamists or something...

That is interesting and Monty Python was late 70’s and early 80’s.

The other side of that coin is that the terrorists have succeeded in expanding the visability of Islam.

I can’t go to a museum these days without seeing some highlight of Islamic art. “We need to learn about other cultures”.

Art museums have always highlighted different cultures. They have been less interested in contemporary examples of Christian traditions.

I don't know, maybe there's something to be said for not taking crap from people. Are we Christians too docile and not willing to really defend our faith?

I agree that this is privately funded unlike the NEA works (and posted just that comment earlier in this thread).

It is still a deliberately insensitive and intolerance bashing of Christian iconography. The artist and gallery owner can still be labelled as bigots and boycotted.

THIS is turning the other cheek. Not waging a war over blasphemy.

The mocking and ridiculing of Christians is nothing new.

Martyrs were thrown to the lions, crucified, and burned at the stake.

We lead by example. But turning the other cheek does not mean pretending that there was no deliberate offense intended in their "art".

Art museums have always highlighted different cultures. They have been less interested in contemporary examples of Christian traditions.

Isn't that partly because museums are where you go to see things you don't see in everyday life? I don't have access to exotic cultures on a daily basis, so if I want to learn about them, I can go to a museum. I'm surrounded by (and involved in) contemporary Christian culture every day. It's the same reason I wouldn't go to a zoo filled with cats and hamsters.
