WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"
The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it. His rival Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is a member of the Mormon church, which is known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account.
A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.

Would somebody please tell me again why we don't see folks getting on the case of those like Glenn Beck--somebody showing religious intolerance to the religious viewpoints of a Huckabee--but gobs & gobs of people...including many FREEPERS along with Beck..."jump" all over Huckabee for the alleged same thing?
Can you spell hypocrisy? Inconsistency?
Mormonism is a cult. Read Walter Martin’s work.
Youre stretching badly there, again, bud. Glenn Beck said nothing intollerant about any religion.
I didn't hear Beck this a.m. So perhaps you can tell me then, why this particular timing for hitting upon Huckabee and what was he so upset toward him about?
Other folks on this same subject's thread last night didn't like it that Huckabee was making a religious comment about another religion.
Now if Beck addressed that at all this morning, then he was upset about Huckabee's religious question about another religion.
May I suggest you listen to Glenn Beck’s show. If you’re not a member, I will gladly send you the audio.
Like I said before, Mr. Huckabee’s question was not an HONEST question — that’s the whole point.
If that's the case, then you think people are going to love "this kind of religious stuff" brought up incessantly by the MSM in '08 if Romney is the R nominee?
Or how about if he wins in '08, you think the people are going to love the "4 more years" of "this religious stuff" bandied about everywhere?
If I believed for a minute that Huckabee was asking an innocent question in the hopes that a NYT reporter could set him straight on the dogmas of Mormonism, I would say, “no harm, no foul.” But since NYT reporters are not known for their discernment of complex religious doctrine, it is obvious that Huckabee made this statement for the sole purpose of taking one aspect of a religion, presenting it in the worse possible light, and letting it drop to a reporter in the hope of gaining a few more political points with evangelicals. For shame.
The fact is that what he said isn’t as important as why he said it. As a Roman Catholic who has had someone stand outside my religion, pick one tiny piece of dogma (transubstantiation) and then tell me that I engage in “ritual cannabalism” every Sunday, I know how hurtful it is to have someone purposely insult ones faith in order to belittle and demean its followers.
While I don’t believe in the tenets of your faith as I understand them, I believe wholeheartedly in your right as Americans to hold whatever beliefs you choose without being subject to calculated ridicule by someone who aspires to the highest office in the land. America was established by the Founding Fathers to be an open, pluralistic, religiously-tolerant society. Huckabee has proven himself unworthy of that legacy.
Why don’t you listen know and see where he is coming from, in a nutshell who raises the std vs. lowers it (the latter Huckabee) Got to run.
Amen and thank you.
>>Jesus was the first born spirit in the pre-existence.
>That’s where Mormans get it wrong. Jesus is God Almighty in the flesh.
Sigh. The libs are rubbing their hands together at the prospect of religious doctrine fights like this in our party. I’m no friend of Mitt or Huck (both are too lib for me), and I love core social values. But this kind of conversation has no winners, and it being held on a public stage in a political context is probably exactly the kind of thing the Founding Fathers were trying to avoid.
Libs go too far in banishing creches and menorahs from public places, but having some separation of church and state is probably a good thing. (please don’t all stone me at once, guys!)
Thank you, you hit the nail right on the head. When Mormons talk about Jesus being created as a "spirit child", they are showing that they have departed from an essential truth of the historic Christian faith.
It almost makes me think Huckabee is a Clinton plant. He does come from the same state.
It's obvious that LadyNavyvet took this Huckabee question for the sole purpose of taking one aspect of Huckabee's religious understandings, presenting it in the worse possible light, and posting it on a FREEPER thread in the hope of Huckabee losing a few political points with FREEPERS & lurkers. (Oh, how do you plead?)
The fact is that what he said isnt as important as why he said it...
So I guess we'll conclude the same thing. The content of your post isn't what we're objecting to as much as "why" you've said it (well, at least we can do the "honorable" thing and ask you for your motivation vs. the "dishonorable" thing of pretending to know someone's inward heart & judging them before many...please tell us, since you know "why" Huckabee said this...we want the "inside scoop").
America was established by the Founding Fathers to be an open, pluralistic, religiously-tolerant society. Huckabee has proven himself unworthy of that legacy.
Nice to see you extend that wonderful open, pluralistic, religious tolerance toward Huckabee's one question!
Sure I enjoy Glenn Beck!
I totally agree with you. Huckabee reminds me so much of the Clintons religiosity, oh thats right Billy Graham did say old Bill would made a good preacher and Hillry would be a good leader. Swooon.
“Before the 10:00am EST break, Glenn did more than a number, he threw him overboard ( figuratively ). With 2 million listeners and the number 3 show (depending who is ranking him) that is big news if you ask me....”
I just heard the beginning, and missed the rest due to a phone call. Thanks for letting me know it was much stronger than what I had heard. GO FRED!
