TOLEDO, Ohio — A Republican state lawmaker won a special congressional election Tuesday, hanging onto to a conservative district despite a strong push by Democrats.
Union-backed groups and Democrats were hoping to steal the seat from the GOP and make a big statement going into the 2008 election in Ohio, which is expected to again have a significant role in determining the next president.
Republican Bob Latta defeated Robin Weirauch to complete the term of U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor who died in September from a fall at his Washington apartment.
Latta, the son of a former Ohio congressman, had 55 percent of the vote and Weirauch had 45 percent with 42 percent of the vote counted.
The 5th District in northwest Ohio is conservative and traditionally Republican. No Democrat has won the seat since the 1930s.

Still on issues that affect everyday life, there is NO reason to vote for a Democrat and our side is running the white flag up the flag pole. I'm not.

A 10% difference is a landslide today.
Both districts are pretty much slam dunk GOP (I’m glad I live in one of them ;-)
But to lose would be the big story. However, if the reverse were true I’m sure the lib media would be talking how this predicts a landslide for the rats next november.
Actually, Democrats didn’t expect to actually win this. They had much more cash, so they forced the GOP to spend money there to financially deplete them.

On *every single issue* people prefer Democrats to Republicans. Seriously—go check it out and weep.
Bush won this district with 61%. Numbers for congressional districts held by incumbents of the same part should *surpass* those of the presidency—and they did in the previous cycle.
Essentially, this was a net 6% loss for Republicans over the previous cycle.

Remember that just about everyone on this board thought we would do great in 2006. Well, that didn’t happen—and the same trends in terms of polling and money in effect back then are in effect right now.
yep, that’s right. Yet everybody here is celebrating. I suspect there are going to be a lot of confused and disappointed freepers in 2008.

i suppose I should clarify—this wasn’t a net loss versus 2006. It was about the same. But it was a net loss versus 2004.
And if we’re matching 2006 numbers, we’re not doing well.
I wasn’t one of them. I don’t find the results in Ohio and VA to be “very troubling,” but rather, encouraging. IMO your doom and gloom pronouncement about the Ohio result was way off base. Latta did just as well as the previous incumbent did in 2006, a down year for the Reps nationwide and in Ohio. Sometimes you have to accept good news for what it is, good news.
