The Politico) GOP state Del. Rob Wittman is heading to a landslide victory over Iraq war veteran Phil Forgit (D) in today's Virginia special election to succeed the late Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-Va).
With 67 percent of precincts reporting, Wittman has won 63 percent of the vote, while Forgit has only tallied 35 percent. Most of the outstanding vote is from Republican-heavy parts of the district, making it all-but-impossible for Forgit to close the gap.
Neither party’s congressional campaign committee spent much money in the district, but the NRCC had spent money to produce a campaign ad, which they never aired. Instead, all the attention has been in northwest Ohio, where a much-closer special election also took place today.
The district has been reliably Republican, giving President Bush 60 percent of the vote in 2004. But even conservative parts of the Old Dominion have trended in a Democratic direction recently, and Gov. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and former governor Mark Warner campaigned alongside Forgit over the last week.
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader John Boehner said that, if Wittman was elected, he would work to secure him a spot on the coveted House Armed Services Committee.
Republicans understand this ploy...and aren’t stopped from voting. That’s evident by the landslide in that VA district. The donkeys can only out fox a very tiny percent...and there just is NO way to fool conservatives. That’s what p*sses them off so bad...conservatives listen to a higher source...The Eternal One.
A 57% to 43% victory is for Latta is less than spectacular, given the district, but it’s good enough.
Weaker than 2004 better than 2006.
Given the lack of incumbency & the divisive primary on the GOP side, I’ll say this is pretty darn good.
Maybe unspectacular for an incumbent but both candidates were running for an open seat and polls put the margin at 3%, a toss up. Given those circumstances the margin of victory is very good.

I’ll admit there’s a lot of distaste for the Iraq War. But it’s not the Democrat type of distaste. They look at polls showing that 60% (or whatever) of the public think the war was a mistake, and they automatically assume that 60% is composed of Code Pink anti-American whackos. It isn’t. Much of that 60% is composed of people who think we’re fighting the war too weakly, or that we’re wasting our time trying to build a pluralistic democracy among people who hate each other. Those are not liberal voters.
I was concerned because The Washington Times reported yesterday that ACLU asked registrar's to make sure poll workers tell poll workers that they need not have a photo ID and "Virginia ACLU executive director Kent Willis asked poll workers inform voters that they can cast a ballot even if they don't have identification on them. . . . Virginia law allows voters who are not carrying identification to sign an 'affirmation of identity' form."
When did Virginia pass this crazy law?
Forgit is a teacher who I have heard received his Bronze Star for establishing a literacy program in Iraq.
I guess you could say it isn’t a big deal because Republicans held 2 conservative seats but if you look at the Ohio election and how the Republican candidate won on a platform of strict border control and reducing taxes I think you can see a way forward for Republican candidates next year. In that sense it’s a big deal.

This is about the identical result from last November when Paul Gilmor beat the same man (and his 57% was down from his usual higher margins, but given the disaster that OH was, understandable). At least this gives us an idea of the maxing-out of what a well-funded Dem can score in this seat.
Wasn’t this seat “in danger?” What about the Pryce seat? Is there a candidate there who is competent?
State Senator Steve Stivers has agreed to run. He will be a credible candidate against Mary Jo Kiley.
