Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"
The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it. His rival Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is a member of the Mormon church, which is known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account.
A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.
"We believe, as other Christians believe and as Paul wrote, that God is the father of all," said the spokeswoman, Kim Farah. "That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, on the other hand, was the only begotten in the flesh and we worship him as the son of God and the savior of mankind. Satan is the exact opposite of who Christ is and what he stands for."
Romney did not respond to a request for comment.
Earlier this month in Iowa, Huckabee wouldn't say whether he thought Mormonism rival Romney's religion was a cult.
"I'm just not going to go off into evaluating other people's doctrines and faiths. I think that is absolutely not a role for a president," the former Arkansas governor said.

Is the republican party going to render every candidate irrelevant by sniping each other while the rats (and Dopra) cruise to the white house.
Jesus is not the brother of anyone. He is the One True God. He is God.
Thank you. I knew all this stuff about Jesus being a "spirit child" and that He and Lucifer were brothers was a bunch of junk. Thank you for clarifying it.
Some people are so Heavenly, they’re just no Earthly good.
These threads on Romney and Huckabee, among many other threads on many other topics, topics not even remotely a discussion of religion, often degenerate into heated, angry and uncivil arguments over religious doctrine and the finer points of the specific doctrines and dogmas of the many and varied Christian denominations.
The overriding theme among many posters seems to be I am right. You are wrong. What I believe is true and the One and Only Truth and is not to be disputed. If you dont believe exactly as I do, then you are (variously), a member of a cult, an atheist, misguided, unsaved, going to Hell, un-Christian, not a real Christian, or conversely a bigot, etc., etc., etc.
You will get no argument from me as to whether you or anyone else is right or wrong with respect to what they believe or dont believe about The Creator. I support your right to believe as you choose and your freedom to express it. I also support the rights of others to disagree with you. From the Founding Fathers and American Revolutionaries to the thousands upon thousands of men in uniform; so many risked and gave up their life so you could have the right to argue and disagree and not be jailed or persecuted for your religious beliefs. Isnt Freedom a beautiful thing?
Why is it that this ideal lost on so many?
The Founders were predominately Christian (with a few leaning decidedly Deist) but they were of many different denominations and sects and certainly the Calvinist, the Unitarian, the Episcopalian, the Quaker, the Congregationalist and the Catholic, while all Christians with many beliefs in common, did not all share exactly the same beliefs and Biblical and spiritual interpretations.
But they put aside their denominational differences and came together to forge the most perfect form of Government ever the American Republic.
Our Country is at war and we are facing serious issues, domestic and foreign and the future and direction this nation will take is at stake with this election.
If one wants to apply a purely religious litmus test for or against a candidate, then that is their right to follow their heart and conscience. But when we lose site of what is really important like preserving the Republic and the Constitution and our Liberties and Freedoms and instead fall into arguments about how many angels can sit on the head of pin, then we Conservatives risk becoming silly and irrelevant and do great dishonor to so many who gave us so much.
Can we (and all the candidates) stick to the real issues in this election and move discussions and arguments about religious doctrine to its appropriate place the Religion Thread?
Huckster is a loose cannon, an unprincipled flake. He should be running as a Democrat
And his religious compassionate conservative ideas are screwball especially on the immigration invasion
Me too Marlowe. I pray for I fear God’s judgement upon this nation. We deserve his wrath, and we just might get it now.
That report that the dems are laying off hoping to get him as our nominee sounds absolutely on target.
With Huckabee v. ANY-DEM we are in lose/lose, especially regarding borders-illegals-culture.
Before we were born on the earth, we lived in the presence of our Heavenly Father as one of His spirit children. In this premortal existence, we attended a council with Heavenly Father's other spirit children. At that council, Heavenly Father presented His great plan of happiness (see Abraham 3:2226).
In harmony with the plan of happiness, the premortal Jesus Christ, the Firstborn Son of the Father in the spirit, covenanted to be the Savior (see Moses 4:2; Abraham 3:27). Those who followed Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ were permitted to come to the earth to experience mortality and progress toward eternal life. Lucifer, another spirit son of God, rebelled against the plan and "sought to destroy the agency of man" (Moses 4:3). He became Satan, and he and his followers were cast out of heaven and denied the privileges of receiving a physical body and experiencing mortality (see Moses 4:4; Abraham 3:2728).
Mike Huckabee is the second coming of Bill Clinton. He is a 100% phony, and will do anything to win.
Sorry the link didn’t post.
Huckabee’s “Jesus brother of Satan” question is not accidental by a man who’s out front right now.
We simply have to ask ourselves by what strategy he sees that helping him.
Huckabee is more of a conservative than is Romney.
The bottom line: Huck is right on Life, Guns, Marriage, and God.
Romney is absolutely untrustworthy on the life issue.
Did you hear that Huckabee got the endorsement of the MINUTEMEN Border watchers?
So far as Fred is concerned: he’ll be hitting heavily with media buys.
So Huckabee was right?
just more proof that Gomer Huckabee is a “useful idiot” whose sole purpose is to protect left wing rudy.
Well, if "Messiah" popped up as a "New Testament" concept, wanna tell me why Joseph Smith said the Book of Mormon character Nephi was using that term and applying it to a specific Person named "Christ" already before 500 B.C.? (see 2 Nephi 25:16-18)
In reality, "Messiah" is a specifically Jewish concept, NOT a New Testament Greek word. (Why would Nephi be using a Greek-based word like "Christ" more than 500 years before He is incarnated?) "Messiah" itself is an "Old Testament" "deliverer" concept introduced by Daniel, generically believed in by OT Jews but never applied to any one person named "Christ" or named "Jesus" by OT Jews...except, of course, in where else but the Book of Mormon.
(1) Does it make you feel morally superior to JSDude1 to be able to say this to him? (If not, why even say it?)
(2) Doesn't it make you wonder that if a nominee like Romney sees a divine throne, as ruler of his own planet--to be worshipped as a god, as his next career stop...would this kind of prideful religious beliefs--the pride of becoming a god based upon lifting yourself by your own spiritual bootstraps...is this the kind of foolish religious beliefs you would likewise be referencing?
Thanks for the information. I sure am learning more about the Mormon religion. I still feel that Mike Huckabee was rude to make the comment he did. I do not plan on voting for Romney or Huckabee, but if I had to make a choice between the two it would be Romney.
Spot on mate. ;)
