Ohio Attorney Recants Abduction Story

Toledo, Ohio (AP) -- A pregnant attorney who vanished for four days last week now says her tale of being kidnapped at gunpoint and taken to Georgia was fabricated, police said Tuesday.

Karyn McConnell Hancock, a former Toledo city councilwoman, had disappeared Wednesday and was found Saturday near Atlanta. Her husband said Monday that his 35-year-old wife, six months pregnant with her second child, claimed she was kidnapped by two men and a woman.

Police would not discuss a motive, but Hancock's husband Lawrence Hancock said his wife has been having a meltdown for several years.

"She experienced a meltdown and attempted to handle those matters without the assistance of professional help or others. Karyn elected to leave everything because she felt that she was unable to continue," he said.

Police said at a news conference Tuesday that she recanted the story Monday after eight hours of questioning. Hancock will likely be charged with making a false police report, said Police Chief Mike Navarre.

It is very unfortunate when people cannot ask for help when they become emotionally or mentally imbalanced. I feel for this woman and her family.

Such a fraud. She should be charged for making a false police report.

It would make a good sequel to the runaway bride story, after which it seems to have been patterned. She even remembered to put in a racial element, claiming that the two men were white.

(To refresh anyone who forgot, the runaway bride claimed that the imaginary abductor in her case was hispanic. )

Personally, I am glad to see one of these all-too-frequent disappearances of a woman end in her still being alive.

Something told me that story was b.s. when I first heard it reported. My wife said the same thing.

Methinks that every state bar has a confidential helpline and assistance program to help lawyers who are becoming unbalanced. Obviously they are intended to help so that the clients who rely on the attorney’s judgment, performance and responsibility are not disadvantaged. In any event I’m sure she could have availed herself of those services.

” . . . but Hancock’s husband Lawrence Hancock said his wife has been having a meltdown for several years.”

So . . . . . impregnating her while she’s in this condition seemed like a good idea to you?

My point exactly. She could have taken advantage of services available but didn’t.

If she described her “abductors” as white, Asian or Hispanic -— she should also be charged with a hate crime.

Get with the program. "People of Color" cannot commit hate crimes. If you hear of any person of color being charged with a "Hate Crime," please let me know. It would be a first.
