Proposal Would Let Immigrants Apply To Be Police Officers (Major Barf Alert)

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- The agency that oversees training and hiring standards for police departments in Maryland is looking at a proposal that would let noncitizens with green cards become police officers.

The proposal is being championed by Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger. He said it doesn't make sense that legal immigrants can join the U.S. military but can't become law enforcement officers.

The Maryland Police Training Commission could vote on the issue next month.

Critics said it would be difficult to check the backgrounds of noncitizens applying to be officers, and they said the proposal could allow terrorists to infiltrate police agencies.

When the invaders become the police, the war is coming fast.

You might want to read a bit more closely before declaring war. As a number of (but apparently not enough) replies have indicated, this proposal concerns legal permanent residents — not those who are in this country illegally.

The police should be citizens.

Period.

What the blurb doesn’t explain, is that other jurisdictions who have enacted this policy have become “sanctuary cities” for illegal immigrants. Chicago is a good example. IOW, immigration law goes out the window.

The other danger that I see is well connected Mexican drug cartels placing their own people in law enforcement. That’s just one danger of improper employee vetting.

Why? Why the police, any more than the military?

And you still have yet to explain your “invaders” comment - are you saying you consider legal immigrants (permanent residents, even) to be “invaders”?

The military should only be citizens too.

We are so fractured and balkanized already with thirty million non english speakers refusing to assimilate. We should have a twenty year moratorium on all imigration.

Citizenship should be hard to get and mean something.

Great. More Cops that show little respect for the law.

Er, non-citizens with green cards ARE following the law.

Well, women who get abortions and the doctor’s who provide them are following the law too, so what’s your point?

My point is that they are not "illegal" immigrants, as some were saying. They immigrated legally.

What's yours? That people who come to the United States legally, to work, contribute to society and be productive, are on par with people who kill kids?

I have quite a few friends and co-workers who are naturalized citizens and/or permanent residents, and I can tell you this: it’s not an easy process.

I agree that our immigration policy has led to too much balkanization and people refusing to assimilate. I believe, however, that the problem is caused by ILLEGAL immigrants, not the legal immigration we’re talking about here.

Are you kidding??? You are comparing legal immigrants to this country with women who kill their children??

It's posts like this that cause the MSM and libs to brand conservatives "anti-immigrant" and racist.

We should be fighting wholeheartedly against illegal immigration. We should also be wholeheartedly welcoming those who enter the country legally and do what is necessary to obtain permanent residency.

My point is that just because a law is on the books, it doesn’t necessarily make it moral and/or best for the country.

That being said, we honor the law as written. Hiring green-card holders from Mexico to become police officers would ensure non-enforcement of current immigration law. That has been the result in every jurisdiction that has implemented this tactic.

We allow LPRs to join the military.

[We allow LPRs to join the military.]

I know, they just discovered a Marine Corp Officer (suspected Hezbollah spy) who had a sham marriage to get her green card. Her sister engaged in a sham marriage to infiltrate the FBI and CIA (her current husband just happens to work at the State Dept. and had sensitive posts to the ME).

Actually, I believe those two sisters used sham marriages to obtain citizenship, not just lawful residency.

So, I guess we should prevent naturalized citizens from joining the military/police, too?

My point is that just because a law is on the books, it doesn’t necessarily make it moral and/or best for the country.

So, what's your suggested alternative? What rights, if any, should permanent residents have?

That being said, we honor the law as written. Hiring green-card holders from Mexico to become police officers would ensure non-enforcement of current immigration law. That has been the result in every jurisdiction that has implemented this tactic.

What's your source for this assertion? Why do you believe that lawful permanent residents, who have complied with all of the necessary requirements to become permanent residents AND who have gone through the police academy, are incapable of enforcing current immigration law? Why is it at all relevant that the officers are from Mexico?

Perhaps the jurisdictions to which you refer (Chicago, NY, etc) are simply hostile to immigration enforcement, regardless of presence of legal, permanent resident police officers?

So what does that prove? We have American citizens like Pollard and Walker who are spies. We have crooked cops who are American citizens. Unless you have some data beyond anecdotal information how LPRs are a greater risk in terms of security or corruption, you are just arguing from emotion.

A green card is part of the pathway to citizenship. The holders have fulfilled legal requirements to obtain the card. They can then choose to apply for citizenship or not.

How do you feel about the millions of people in this country who hold dual nationality and citizenship? Should they be allowed to be cops?

LOL.

It’s not anecdotal information. We are in a war and the enemy is finding our weak underbelly. Don’t be so naive.
