Gun Free Zones and the Ketchup Bottle

The common denominator is all these shootings took place in a gun free zone. The shooters made the safe assumption that their evil plans had a probability of succeeding because the majority, if not all of the citizens there, would be unarmed. They were sitting ducks.

Who would have thought? I sometimes wonder if the idea for these stupid gun free zones was to allow just this kind of crap to happen, so you could turn around and argue that we need to outlaw guns.

In March 1982, responding to the passage of a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Illinois, and the fawning media coverage that accompanied it, the city council of Kennesaw, Georgia, decided to make a statement of its own. With exceptions duly made for convicted felons, the disabled, and those with religious objections, the council passed (unanimously) an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun.

The usual claims of Wild West style shootouts were made. Some expected causal disagreements to devolve into gun battles. The actual results of that move are far more interesting:

The crime rate initially plummeted for several years after the passage of the ordinance, with the 2005 per capita crime rate actually significantly lower than it was in 1981, the year before passage of the law.

Prior to enactment of the law, Kennesaw had a population of just 5,242 but a crime rate significantly higher (4,332 per 100,000) than the national average (3,899 per 100,000). The latest statistics available – for the year 2005 – show the rate at 2,027 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the population has skyrocketed to 28,189.

Took a walk with the family yesterday afternoon. At one point on the path was a sign that prohibited weapons. My five year old son asked me what that sign meant. My wife and I (in unison) said, “Only victims allowed.”

We proceeded to explain like so...

Q: “Who will obey that sign?”
A: “Good people.”

Q: “Who will ignore that sign?”
A: “Bad people.”

Q: “So who will have the weapons?”
A: “Only the bad people.”

My son gets it.

The PC crowd and Hollywood promoted the “Wild West style shootouts” myth. One thing that happened in the “Wild West” was that on cattle drives, all guns were place in a wagon and only brought out when needed. In the towns, the idea of guys carrying guns out in the open stopped a lot of criminals when they saw how many guns were around.

Exactly. Manners and etiquette went out with the PC crowd.

When every free man openly carries a gun or a sword, and is prepared to use it to defend his honor, people are more inclined to walk softly and observe good manners.

And of course the converse is also true. The rules of chivalry arose because you couldn’t afford to have guys with armor and swords roaming around without good manners and a disposition to help the weak rather than prey upon them.

There will always be abuses, no matter what the social system dictates, but in general things worked better when people were armed and had a sense of honor, both to defend themselves and to control their urges.

In Colorado a property owner can post a sign at entrances that firearms are prohibited. If you are a licensed CCW permit holder you can be asked to leave if caught. If you refuse to leave you can be arrested for trespassing. There is a big list on the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners web site of places that are posted “no firearms” in Colorado. Many shopping malls are on the list. I don’t recall seeing any churches on the list, but they can legally post private property.

You are correct that there is no state law prohibiting concealed carry of firearms in churches.

I forgot to add that the Missionary Training school in Arvada was supposed to have a no firarms policy as reported in the Rocky Mountain News.

There shouldn't be any doubt, that's EXACTLY why gun grabbers invented gun free zones. There was nothing innocent or noble behind this invention.

Those that voted for these, and those that continue to push for more of them while having abundant evidence of their deadliness are guilty of accessory to murder. I'm not an "over the top" kind of guy, but it'll be real hard to convince me that I'm wrong on this.

Dang! An alert farmer and some brave citizens save the day.

In 1921 four men got a ride in to Bruceton Mills with a local farmer on a wagon coming from Morgantown. They asked the farmer many questions about the bank. The farmer, being suspicious, called the bank cashier at the time, Jeremiah Thomas, and told him that the four men might try to rob the bank. Two of the men hid behind a church while the other two men,( Named Moore and Madden), stopped at a house owned by the Benson family and stole some food and guns. While they hid in the woods the men ate the food and then proceeded to the bank. At the bank a group of men including Dr. DeFoe was waiting for them. Moore the smaller of the two stood behind Madden and took a shot at Dr. DeFoe but missed. Dr. DeFoe returned fire and shot Moore, who died soon after. The same bullet snapped the suspenders off the pants of Madden. Constable Benson then went to the church and arrested the other two men, one of which was carrying a bottle of liquid later determined to be nitroglycerin.
You can see the suspenders hanging down in the first pic . . . and I guess the guy on the ground is DRT or on his way there.

Messing with the folks in WVA probably still not a good idea. People in small towns around here are certainly better armed than in the big city.

If you are carrying concealed correctly, no one will ever know, unless they have metal detectors, pat you down etc.
