Libby to Drop Appeal in CIA Leak Case

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is dropping his appeal in the CIA leak case, his attorney said Monday.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted of perjury and obstruction for lying about his conversations with reporters about outed CIA operative Valerie Plame.

"We remain firmly convinced of Mr. Libby's innocence," attorney Theodore Wells said. "However, the realities were, that after five years of government service by Mr. Libby and several years of defending against this case, the burden on Mr. Libby and his young family of continuing to pursue his complete vindication are too great to ask them to bear."

President Bush commuted Libby's 30-month jail sentence in July. Libby paid a $250,000 fine and must serve two years' probation. Libby remains a convicted felon, but Bush could issue a full pardon as his administration winds down.

Wells said he has not discussed a possible pardon with the president and does not know what Bush will do.

Libby was the only person charged in the investigation into the leak of Plame's identity. Nobody was charged with the leak itself, which Plame alleges was politically motivated. Her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, was a vocal critic of the Bush administration's war policy.

That’s too bad. I was hoping he would be vindicated in court.

I just love the double standard, the impeached rapist is a millionaire, money he stole/scrounged and is roaming the streets.

He ran out of money before he ran out of injustice.

I wish Libby realized in advance there was going to be somebody nailed and took his interviews more seriously. The fact that the Wilson’s pulled this off with the assistance of people in high places should be noteworthy to any person serving in government.

Wells's analysis makes sense. Why risk a bad result at a time when it is possible the White House will be occupied by an unfriendly.

President Bush needs to do the right thing for Scooter and pardon him before he leaves office.

I have learned one lesson from all of this....courts and grand juries are nothing but perjery traps...i will always take the fifth amendment on any question ever asked me by the government...because not remembering 100% your answer from one day to the next is now a crime in this country

Libby knows he’ll get the full pardon from the Prez. So nothing to appeal, because the “crime” and the case will not exist. As if it never happened. So why waste time.

Bush should rub it in and give Libby the Medal of Freedom. If that happens—and please, Mr. President, please do it—I’d pay to be in the room when Joe Wilson hears about it.

This is sad. I had hoped to see him win in court, but sometimes the process just wears one down and drains one’s resources to the point where one is just too weary to carry on the fight any more.

I’ll bet anything that he’ll get one of those January 09 Pardons.

Wasn't lying to a grand jury what got Clinton impeached?

Also, you can't simply plead the fifth to any question you are asked. You can only refuse to answer if your answer is incriminating to yourself. A court or grand jury can compel you to testify about anything except an actual crime that you committed.

1/19/09.....Presidential pardon. If BillyBob can pardon his punk brother and Susie MacDougal, whose willingness to roll over saved the Clintons from jail, then Bush can certainly pardon Libby.

-Billy was in court fighting a sexual harrasment charge-
(because attempted rape charges-were beyond the date
that he could have been charged)

Billy SIGNED court documents that he WOULD NOT contact
witnesses- he immediately went out and called his secretary

Like the dim-bulb she is -she admitted to the court -BUBBA
went over what her testimony would be!

SLAM-DUNK- perjury- witness tampering- flat out lying-

BILLy had his lawyer quit, and asked NOT to be disbarred-

Billy paid @ $800K to Paula Jones

The Clintonistas are worse than the mafia/criminals
that are in prison today

There that paragraph sits like a turd in the middle of this AP story and nowhere is it mentioned that it is now known that it was Richard Armitage who originally "leaked" Plame's name to Bob Novak. Typical of the sloppy AP.

But for the grace of God, there go I, as well as many other good and well intended men.

We have a system, that when controlled at the helm by the intentions of the corrupt, such as a democrat, it is designed to completely and utterly destroy you.

Libby screwed up because he was human, not because he was a crook, yet he was destroyed because he wasn’t a democrat.

So in the end, THIS is his final reward for serving the Public, disgusting.

A court or grand jury can compel you to testify about anything except an actual crime that you committed.Well they can try. They tried to compel Judith Wilson, of the NY Times to testify, but she held out (in jail) for quite a while.

Of course you can just answer "I don't recall" to every question. That seems to have worked for Hillary on several occasions.
