The GOP nomination is up for grabs

The GOP Race is Still Up for Grabs RealClearPolitics By Salena Zito

The most intriguing aspect of the Republicans' road to the nomination for president is its unpredictability. It's a buckle-up race that won't be decided early or easy. About the only thing for certain is that anything can happen and anyone can win.

Campaign strategists for four candidates -- Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee and John McCain -- can sit down straight-faced, without spin, and outline a plausible scenario for how their guy can win the nomination.

And for each legitimate win-scenario is an equally legitimate reason they cannot win.

“Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee and John McCain.
Not a one of those are conservative.”

But Fred Thompson is a real conservative! :)

"In selecting men for office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect or denomination of the candidate, look to his character. The scriptures teach that rulers should be men who rule in the fear of God, able men, men of truth, hating covetousness. It is to the neglect of this rule that we must ascribe the multified frauds, breaches of trust, and embezzlement of public property which tarnish the character of our country and disgrace government. When a citizen gives his vote to a man of known immorality, he abuses his civic responsibility, he sacrifices not only his interest, but that of his neighbor; he betrays the interest of his country." -Noah Webster, 1823

This bears repeating, Thank you, I am not voting for the lesser of two evils.

So long as we continue to vote for them “while holding our noses” they (the GOP) will continue to push them as candidates. Too many party faithful will continue with the scare tactic of “you’ll give it to the other guy” and nothing will change. The process will only continue to generate more moderate to liberal leaning candidates until the only choice left is a true socialist.

If the GOP fails to nominate a candidate that energizes the base then they are to blame for the consequences. I will be genuinely (happily) surprised if a true conservative gets the nomination.

More thought needs to go into how to break the cycle rather than supporting it at every election.

Well, it can be argued that we ought to have better choices.

Well, it can be argued that WE DO have better choices.

Of course I agree with you and to reinforced your point, let's be clear, that we HAVE A SUPERIOR, FANTASTIC candidate in hunter! ** RIGHT NOW **. When we lose the presidency and God knows what else, probably for the next 8 or 12 years, let's remember the choices we are making right now!

On the positive side, and Huckabee demonstrates that... It's not too late yet!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely.

The only one who will able to communicate it in power and truth will be one who has lived it consistently throughout his public career, for decades.

It will always be a mystery to me... Why conservatives did not run to his side the moment he showed up?... Is it possible we are so blinded by the MSM, we can not see anything for ourselves anymore?... If the candidate is not ‘popular’ with TV, then he is death in the water? etc, etc, etc. :)

This bears repeating, Thank you, I am not voting for the lesser of two evils.

Then you increase the chance of getting the worst of two evils.

Who’s at fault in this scenario? By encouraging people to vote for anyone the GOP nominates you are saying to them “nominate the most moderate”. The real problem is that we can no longer apply pressure to the party in nominating the right candidate. The bloggers are telling the party “we have no choice but to vote for whoever they nominate” so they’ll pick the one that best fits their political motivations.

Pre-election strategists are the problem, not the cure. Until a little coordinated tough love can be organized we are doomed to repeat this every election.

It’s early enough for the “right” candidates to be selected, so the ball is in the GOP court. If they pick the “wrong” candidate they need to be rewarded accordingly or they’ll simply repeat on the next cycle.

I understand where you're coming from. After all of the smoke clears, the two candidates for the next President will come from the Republican or Democrat parties.

I'm only focused on the Repub nominee. Whoever makes it through the gauntlet will have earned the nomination. Fred is my guy, and I'm confident that he'll be the nominee. His voting record is conservative, and he's an articulate spokesman for his policies.

If it's not Fred, I'm not going to pack up my marbles and go home. The flaws of the other candidates are well known, but they still are far preferable to anyone on the Democrat side.

Let's see how this plays out before we talk about the "lesser of two evils". Duncan's a good man, and I would enthusiastically support him if he knocked Fred out of the race.

How stupid!! This election is the Republicans for the taking. Of the four major issues, all should be easily won by Republicans.

National security--the Democrats are on the side of our enemies. How about the economy? Democrats will raise taxes in a minute. That will destory the economy. Democrats want no borders and welcome all illegal immigrants. Democrats also are the ones standing in the way of energy independence. They want no new production and refining of our own oil and refuse to build new nuclear facilities.

Now, give me one reason anyone with half a brain would want a Democrat.
