Kidding Ourselves About Immigration
Time ^ | December 6, 2007 | MICHAEL KINSLEY

Posted on 12/09/2007 5:23:00 AM PST by LowCountryJoe

[snip]Another question: Why are you so upset about this particular form of lawbreaking? After all, there are lots of laws, not all of them enforced with vigor. The suspicion naturally arises that the illegality is not what bothers you. What bothers you is the immigration. There is an easy way to test this. Reducing illegal immigration is hard, but increasing legal immigration would be easy. If your view is that legal immigration is good and illegal immigration is bad, how about increasing legal immigration? How about doubling it? Any takers?...

[snip]But let's not kid ourselves that all we care about is obeying the law and all we are asking illegals to do is go home and get in line like everybody else. We know perfectly well that the line is too long, and we are basically telling people to go home and not come back.

Let's not kid ourselves, either, about who we are telling this to. To characterize illegal immigrants as queue-jumping, lawbreaking scum is seriously unjust. The motives of illegal immigrants--which can be summarized as "a better life"--are identical to those of legal immigrants. In fact, they are largely identical to the motives of our own parents, grandparents and great-grandparents when they immigrated. And not just that. Ask yourself, of these three groups--today's legal and illegal immigrants and the immigrants of generations ago--which one has proven most dramatically its appreciation of our country? Which one has shown the most gumption, the most willingness to risk all to get to the U.S. and the most willingness to work hard once here? Well, everyone's story is unique. But who loves the U.S. most? On average, probably, the winners of this American-values contest would be the illegals, doing our dirty work under constant fear of eviction,...

Kinsley is still alive? I thought he was on his last legs with some illness when he was fired as editor of the LAT?

Any way, if he could point to where the mass influx of illegal aliens, or even those with refugee status, contributed positively to any community, I'll think about listening to him.

The United States of America has limited resources. Its land and resources do not increase because millions of people want to relocate from their home country to this country, each year.

The United States of America has a DUTY to provide for its citizens, not to PROVIDE its resources to non-citizens, especially not in the MILLIONS each year.

The United States of America has become and is becoming MORE BALKANIZED by the growth rate of ILLEGALS and legal immigrants. They are CHANGING American culture, language, and values by such HIGH numbers moving into areas.

For there to be an ability to provide for ALL LEGAL CITIZENS, immigration numbers must be kept in line with a percentage growth. This allows for assimilation into US CULTURE, and allows for adaptation for jobs and growth to SUSTAIN increased immigration.

Quit making this a STRAWMAN about "hating immigrants".

It's about LOVING AMERICA and what's BEST for HER future.

Without the safety valve, Medico will dissolve into revolution. Sending those already here illegally back, may help keep the revolution in Medico. Don't do it! Let's leave the illegals here, America needs people shooting at the Citizens here. This will bring about our own downfall quicker, and the quicker the better. Less pain and suffering.

Would you leave your door to your home unlock and let any one come in, regardless if you knew them or not? The answer is no.

Don't you know, you're not allowed to apply common sense to illegals?

Man, the left is in trouble when their arguments in support of their Aztlan Reconquista position can be boiled down to: “it’s just laws, what’s the big deal?”

Dear Michael Kinsey, your stupid “legal immigration” challenge seems more like a condescending attempt on the part of a self proclaimed intellectual(you) to awaken little people who can actually read(me) to the fact that we may have deep rooted sinister motives for opposing illegal immigration.

Please congratulate yourself on figuring this out and also let me assure you that you are on target. It trully is a matter of population growth and assimilation as much as legality. After all, the legal vs illegal issue was put in place to regulate the volume and makeup of new citizens.

Now, Mr. Kinsey, please take a moment and turn your keen mind to the issues and challenges already at hand. Please write another well thought-out article on how you believe we can best manage the impact of the population growth already here since the 90’s alone. Please review the data and charts presented at the NumbersUSA http://www.numbersusa.com/overpopulation/decadegraph.html . Please give thought to the impact over the next several decades and not simply this week or this election cycle.

After reviewing your solutions and conclusions, I will be better prepared to learn more from you about the exponential additional growth we should embrace.

Please also address the short term and long term impact on our society and economy at the national and international level, as well as the impact at our local and community level. As stated earlier, please include a discussion of the impact the current existing population growth numbers will have on our language, culture, values, violent crime rates, educational system, and healthcare system.

I look forward to learning more from you about our bright future in the land of open borders

Do you mind a calm rather than a “pitchfork wielding” reply?

Many of the illegals I sympathize with, they are impoverished and desperate. That sympathy, however does not extend to allowing uncontrolled in-migration. To be an immigrant must include a transfer of loyalty to the new country.

Others of the illegals are clearly a criminal element that I think we can all agree with objecting to.

The change needed is to improve immigration criteria and streamline the process.

Perhaps the Free Republic should initiate a “Rio Linda” section. You know for those posters who wish to expose absurdity through absurdity. It would irk the liberal blogosphere no end and drive mendacious “conservatives out of context” liberal websites like Media Matters nuts.
In other words, how would the looney left misinterpret misinterpretations I wonder?
Not to mention it would highlight the satirical talent of freepers—justifiable jocularity being the best weapon against the nefarious ludicrousness of political correctness.

There isn't one? This is the most conservative website on the world-wide-web, there has to already be one.....One can argue all day to no avail, but when in satire the truth comes home, liberals go hide in their corners. This site, run by Jim (Sir to me), is such a site. Liberals fear this place, because the truth is exposed.

Take an illegal home. Help to preserve America. When one wants to do right, remember, a law breaker is preferred. It is the new law and order of our land! Call your Congressperson. Tell them, illegals make America great. Each Congressperson's rep, on the phone line, will thank you. And all Americans know, when a Congressional rep thanks someone, prepare for a bending over exercise. Exercise is good, makes one strong. Yes, the illegals are the ones, who built this Nation. Law Breakers Needed! Apply at the border. Sorry, Do Not Apply, that would break the new law and order standards. Don't want no new standards being broken.

I’ve read your opinion.

I believe you are blind to what illegal immigration is doing to us and what increased, unchecked legal immigration would do to us.

Your suggestion for background checks is laughable if it weren’t so sad.

Have you ever been to Mexico or Guatamala? What type of “background” information do you plan to get on these people and who would you get it from, the Federales?

Hey Mr. Kinsley I am not too happy with legal immigration right now either. How many stories in the past few years about illegal immigrants and their off spring joining terrorist groups and planning to kill the same people that have welcomed them to this country. Or how about the legal immigrants brought to this country by corporations to work at jobs Americans can do but not for the lower wages?

As far as I am concerned 911 has shown me that we need to be careful of who we allow to come live in this country.

"Please speak to viable solutions, then, Colonel. It is much more productive."

As always, we have a not-so-subtle hint that being against an uncontrolled flood is the same as being against Latinos. Nice try. I am proud of all of my Marines, and those of Latino descent are many of the best I have known.

The problem is there in front of us in many of our schools, particularly in places where we think we're doing people a favor by teaching in Spanish. This mean that a whole generation will be educated in something other than top-level English, which means we guarantee a permanent separation and a permanent underclass.

In my opinion, the solutions are to:

1. Seal the borders and keep them sealed. Legal immigrations is wonderful and to be encouraged, all the rest stopped.

2. Register and identify those among us that are here illegally - and provide a path for those that have not committed any other crime but get here illegally a path to citizenship. Real criminals should be deported.

3. Teach these children English - solid technical English - so they can achieve and compete in this country.

We need to eliminate illegal immigration and reduce legal immigration from 1.2 million a year to 300,000 a year. We also need a merit based system, not one based on extended chain migration and family reunification.

Micheal Kinsley is a lying sack of filth and anything that comes from his mouth or pen is only done in order to break America.

While he might be all those things, also. He remains heir to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune so, I doubt, has ever been negatively impacted by illegal immigration beyond deciding whether to pay Lupita $2 or $2.25 per hour to scrub the commodes at Kinsley Manor.

Don't you all love it when these powdered poodles of privelege sniff disdainfully at us hoi poloi safely behind their manor gates?

“Hell no, far from it. Kinsley a redistributionist and a so-called progressive. But on this immigration point, I happen to side with his position. The question he raises is a good one and I’d like to see it answered by the pitchfork wielding crowd.”
____________________________________________________________

This is easy. It’s about principals...and about money.

Illegals know what they’re doing is illegal. They have no respect for our government or rule of law, after all, look where they come from. Fedgov basically ignores the problem thus exacerbating the problem. Fedgov sucks on this issue because they’re taking the easy way out, ignoring the problem and creating a two tiered system. Fedgov, instead of stepping in and actually doing something about the problem (and no, I do not mean “Shamnesty”...or comprehensive immigration reform) like abiding by our Constitution, would rather wave the magic wand of Shamnesty over the problem in hopes of making it go away. A few of the problems with Jorge’s comprehensive immigration reform is that it makes illegals magically legal. Among other things this is not the least bit fair to those in line trying their damnedest to become citizens in a legal fashion. It goes without saying the logical thing to do would be to do our best to seal the borders between legal crossings. Doing this would have zero effect on legal commerce. The “argument” that Libtards who agree with Kinsley on this whole issue is so stupid it amazes me that one who would call themselves a conservative could even agree with one tenth of what he’s selling. We know already that illegals cost the California taxpayers 10 billion dollars a year. That figure has been proven to be correct and actually might be on the low end of the scale. Anyone who argues that we “can not afford to build the wall” is simply not grounded in reality. We (the taxpayers) can’t afford NOT to build the wall. This corporate give-away that Jorge, Chertoff and gang gave Boeing to build a “virtual wall” is an affront to the taxpayers of the US. Once again we have corporate cronyism and favoritism for corporate interests held above what is good for the US citizen. So right now we have King Jorge holding those officers trained in Border Security hands tied behind their backs.... we have these silly raids in our interior made once a month just to make it seem like he’s actually doing something about the situation....we have a “virtual wall” that by Boeings most recent account does NOT work....and more illegals crossed our borders this year than at any previous year that records were taken.

The POTUS has basically sat back like a 6 year old who didn’t get picked for a game of schoolyard kick-ball and has let the situation deteriorate to a point where his constant blathering and pontificating about the WOT has become a sad parody. What comes out of Bush’s mouth now is static....white noise. He simply has no credibility anymore. We’re supposed to attack Iran....and yet right now.... every week that passes 7,000 or so people of unknown origin waltz across our borders unaccounted for.

Back to this simpleton’s article....

“Why are you so upset at this form of lawbreaking”?

Well genius...what if you were to have a cocktail party a your home and anyone who wanted to (good or bad) decided they would stroll past your gated yard and attend? (crossing the border)
Would you allow it? Would you accept it? What if they decided to walk past the snack tray and camp out in your kitchen next to your fridge? (becoming international “squatters” and getting government food stamps at taxpayers expense) Are you ok with that? I suppose you’d have no problem if they weren’t feeling good after stuffing their faces and decided to crawl upstairs and sleep in your home....on your dime (government housing). Perhaps they drank too much of your “free” booze and woke up with a hangover the next day, rummaged through your pockets and saw you had no cash...they grab your credit card (identity theft) and go down to the local health care clinic and got treated on your dime. Seeing that you’re such a kind host... they decided to stick around for a spell....they now have a tough choice to make. Do they bust into your neighbors home and steal his property to feed and clothe themselves a bit more (become full time gangbangers)... or... as this a-hole Kinsley thinks.... do the “honorable” thing and seek employment (a bit more of the tax-cheat / identity theft doings). Does this “guest” work off the books? Does he pay his fair share into the tax base so as NOT to wind up on the left side of the column of “takers”?

Kinsley and those that agree with him are so far off the base when it comes to this problem that they can’t even see the ballpark through their coke bottle bottomed glasses.

Now, for the legitimate business owner who abides by all the rules, pays his taxes, hires people on the books, deals with all the goobermint agencies that one must deal with...what’s his / her take on all of this? Kinsley doesn’t have to do anything other than to sit on his azz....write a column once a week to stir the pot...to try to make himself more important than he actually is...and that’s his job security.

What if the tables were turned and he was an LEGIT employer who’s business ran on the backs of laborers? Say in the service industry or manufacturing industry. He’d be singin’ a different tune as he watched his business wither on the vine simply because he chooses to run his business within the confines of the law. Currently, Kinsley and the talking chimps simply say...”change the law... let these people work”. Where is the fairness to the tens of thousands of businessmen across the country who’s businesses have been closed because of “illegal” competitors? How about those currently in business who abide by our laws and are handing on by the skin of their knuckles... while their scumbag business neighbors down the street are thriving because they hire illegals....cutting labor costs, insurance costs....etc? What is fair to the US Citizen businesspeople who play by the rules?

Kinsley and his twisted ilk are all worried about “what is fair for the illegals”? Well pal, screw Kinsley...and screw you!!!!!!

Bush is a complete failure in this area. Instead of choosing what is RIGHT,HONES...and a bit harder to accomplish....his “comprehensive immigration policy” was dragged out into the daylight an displayed for all those who abide by the law to see. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t “fair” to US citizens...it was the sleazy easy way out. If you think about it....it was not a “solution” at all...since it was horribly weak on the border security end of things. It would have only ballooned into a problem 100 times as big as it is now......simply because it would have allowed an increase in border crossings. Once the illegals were rewarded for their illegals acts..... more “immigrants” would be lining up at the border waiting to make their “great escape”.....to the land of taxpayer subsidies.

Bush was handed a mandate to straighten out a lot of things after 911. He’s failed on almost all accounts. Just like his daddy... he’s so busy trying to run the world.... he turns his back on the people at home. The Pubs have paid dearly because of it. He’s had 7+ years to streamline the LEGAL immigration procedures...and he’s done nothing. We are in EXACTLY the same position we were as when he set foot in the Whitehouse...

But of course... that’s the master plan. Let things turn to crap here at home...let the problem fester and stew in it’s own festering juices until the content of excrement exceeds the carrying capacity of the bag it’s in. Then all those who sided with Kinsley and his Hate America Klan can sit back and say... “ya see...ya shoulda passed that “Comprehensive immigration reform” bill. But those thinking Americans who were against it (myself included) thankfully had the foresight to see where that abomination would have left us.

Now it is time to scrape the political fecal matter off of our collective shoes....time to toss out every one of those bums who’ve tried to sell us down the river...time to weed the “do-nothings” out of office and get some new blood in there. We need people who can take an honest unbiased look at this problem and do what is right for the citizens of the US.

We STILL have a two tiered employment system, one legit, one not.

Our property taxes are skyrocketing across the country because of illegals.

Hospitals are closing all along the border states...being put out of business because of illegals.

We now have 1/5th of the population of Mexico living within our borders.

Our “neighbor” to the south of us is doing everything he can to subvert our legal system and rule of law....using the US as a pressure relief valve because of his own failed policies. He criticizes OUR policies that we are trying to change to protect our sovereignty and borders....yet look at HIS policies on HIS southern borders!

You can be sure that as this sub-prime / economic crisis spreads like a virus throughout our financial system...the longer that wages are stagnant for the majority of working Americans....the higher that food and fuel prices climb....the problems that illegals present will become more of an issue.

Well Kinsley is right in one regard, if the pro-amnesty crowd were truly in favor of the illegal immigrants, they could back increases in the quotas. The reason they don’t do this is because the reality is the quality of the illegals (education, criminal records, wealth) is low. It would be obvious that they are trying to import a low, uneducated slave class.

But yes, raising quotas is the honest solution, it’s just that the amnesty crowd WANTS ‘illegals’.

Do we accept all without regard to whether they have serious, communicable disease?

EXACTLY!!! (YES, I'm shouting!) There was a little publicized epidemic (yes, a real epidemic, not the kind the MSM talks about) of whooping cough that swept the country about three years ago. My wife had it, and my wife has asthma. Talk about scaring the $h!t out of me, hearing my asthmatic wife cough like that.

And where do you think that epidemic started? I'm pretty sure it didn't come out of the Hamptons or Nob Hill.
