I would love to know what kind of provocation the parents consider justification for nine teenagers, most of them male, to engage in a near-fatal attack on one young woman. Not that I believe that such provocation occurred.

We saw this on TV last night. The poor woman had to be taken to shock-trauma. They showed a phot of her face, and the reporter said her face will never be the same again. This is not the first time vicious little thugs from this middle school have caused horrible damage to someone.

Ugly situation. This takes me back a lot of years. I endured threats from groups of girls in the early 70's, long before diversity became so "correct". Even in those days, school officials were reluctant to assert authority over thuggish young people who relied on strength in numbers to threaten caucasian kids. It ranged from threats on the playing field to taunts, intimidation in the classroom, and sawed off shotguns in school. Girls with whom I sang in choir, and with whom I thought I was on good terms, would gang up mercilessly when the opportunity arose to intimidate individuals. It makes me angry all these years later . . . it was just plain wrong, and the administrators were so overcome with "correctness" that they permitted ongoing injustice to continue.

In some areas, little has changed, or certainly not for the better. Fortunately, in other communities, the situation has improved greatly. In our upper-middle class community, there are a great many inter-racial marriages and families. Our church is a pleasant mix of racial backgrounds, and people seem to have genuinely transcended many of the differences of the past. If all our communities could achieve this, America would indeed benefit greatly from its diversity. These hate-filled episodes are a sad reminder of the lowest behavior among us, whichever group initiates it.

Whenever there is an attack, all the the attackers have to do is lie and say the victim used the N word and a lot of people will immediately consider the attack justified or at least understandable--that happened in the case of Reginald Denny during the Rodney King riots, and later in the case of the Todd Co., KY, man who was murdered for having a Confederate flag on his pickup truck (Michael Westerman?).

There was something on Fox News this morning about 4 girls attacking a man on a subway (must have been in NYC) after he accidentally stepped on someone's foot--the girls all appeared to be black, but it wasn't clear what race their target was (maybe black or Hispanic, possibly Middle Eastern...anyone probably not non-Hispanic white).

Merely a guess, but the companion sounds like he's black. Possible motive being a bi-racial couple? Being in a bi-racial relationship myself, I'd say I'm glad to not live in Baltimore.

Nicole Edwards, 17, was fatally stabbed near a Baltimore light rail station in November, 2006, during an armed robbery of Edwards and her brother. Lataye S. King, 17, was sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday in the case, and a 15-year-old co-defendant is to be sentenced in February for robbery conspiracy and aggravated assault.

Only 25 years and perp walks free, meanwhile a young lady lies dead, what's wrong with this picture? Even at 42 that's a relatively young age to still enjoy life after taking someone elses.
