Thompson campaigns in QCA (Quad Cities Area)
WQAD-TV ^ | December 7, 2007 | Pam Cunningham

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- With 27 days left until the caucuses, presidential candidates are hitting the campaign trail in Iowa and promise to be here from now through the holidays.

This afternoon Republican Fred Thompson was at Thunderbay Grill in Davenport reaching out to conservative voters and dismissing the importance of polls that show him trailing behind both Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee.

An Associated Press poll released today shows Thompson with just 10-percent of the vote in Iowa and Huckabee taking the majority with 39-percent.

But Thompson's not slowing down. While Thompson trails in the polls, many of the people attending his event this afternoon told me they are still undecided. It's those people who can determine what happens on January 3rd.

Pressing the flesh and listening to a candidate's stance on the issues is an Iowan tradition.

Karen Myers from Muscatine says, "I like to get as much information as I can about the different candidates every opportunity I can I like to hear them I like to do that just to be an informed voter."

Randy Dodson of Davenport says, "That way we give everybody a fair chance to give their point of view."

Dodson says he has conservative values and has come here with an open mind. "I think there are a lot of people who haven't made their decision I think Huckabee has come up and has made a dent in his support, it's a matter who will stick to their word."

Sticking to his principles is one of Fred Thompson's arguments of why people should caucus for him. "One thing is for sure I'm not going to change my message I'm not going to change my way I go about things I'm not going to change telling the truth I've been a consistent conservative ever since I step foot into national politics in 1994."

St. Ambrose freshman, Miles Chiotti says Huckabee changed his stance on amnesty and Romney changed his on abortion. That's why he's supporting Thompson.

"I'm conservative and I think he's the only true conservative that's running and as Republicans we need to put the best candidate we can."

Even if Thompson is trailing right now in Iowa, he says he'll campaign hard here because he says polls don't determine what happens on caucus night.

"If you look at the history of Iowa the trailer often winds up winning and the person ahead in the polls winds up losing."

Dodson says he's not sure if wants Thompson or Huckabee, but he'll make up his own mind by January 3rd.

"I don't pay attention to the polls. I go on values and what I think they'll do when they get to Washington."

Another article said that Fred and Jeri now "live" in Iowa and will not leave again (except for Christmas day) between now and the caucuses.

“If you look at the history of Iowa the trailer often winds up winning and the person ahead in the polls winds up losing.”

And Fred has a history of doing just that.

No way! Fred is a lazy campaigner, CNN sez so, remember?

I was at Thunder Bay yesterday. Fred did very well. Covered all of the key issues.

(The room they gave him was too small. Nearly half of the people had to stand.)

Off topic, but Jeri was there. The photos I’ve seen of her here on FR do not do her justice. Shes HOT!

We’re going to a meeting this morning with other Fred supporters to discuss what to do at the caucuses.

I find it interesting that the media has either been negative or strangely silent on Thompson. He has rolled out a series of well planned and well explained policy proposals on taxes, border security and other issues. He is rolling up pro-life endorsements.

Is anyone else getting the impression that the media silently fears Thompson the most and they are hoping that by ignoring him or trying to peg him as lazy that he will somehow lose?

I look for strong showings from him in Iowa and New Hampshire and a win in South Carolina. The media will then be forced to deal with him.

The current media fueled love fest for Huckabee will have flamed out by then. The pro-immigration and tax raising past of his will bring him down. Plus, he has that little “Willie Horton” problem that is starting to smell the joint up.

I’ve been very upset by that myself. The only time I hear Fred mentioned is to talk negatively about him or to ridicule him. I don’t know if this has anything to do with his sliding in the polls, or if the media is lying about the poll results so they can skew public opinion. (They wouldn’t do that, now would they?) I hope the polls are wrong or are being misrepresented. Every online poll I ever see has Fred with a commanding lead. I know these aren’t scientific, but it seems the online polls, especially the FR’s poll, has respondents that are most likely to vote in Republican primaries. I just can’t imagine Rudy, Romney, or Huckabee winning the nomination. So who would that leave? Either Fred or McCain, I would think.

Be patient. The way I see it, Huck peaked too soon. There is too much time for his real history to come to the fore. He will fall as fast as he rose. Rudy has his core and has peaked. Fred keeps hanging near the top in spite of the media black-out. Like I said. If he stays within single digits of the winners in Iowa and New Hampshire (or even pulls an upset in Iowa), Fred wins South Carolina and then he starts to peak heading into Super-Duper Tuesday.

He is the one they do not want Hillary to debate. After all, CNN has been exposed as nothing more than her personal P.R. machine. They will have been neutralized in the eyes of the voters and considered extremely suspect. He’ll take her apart in a debate. It will be like watching Cheney dismantle Leiberman in 200.

Bump to your reply.

Like you, I feel the DBM fears Fred Thompson as the Repub candidate because they know in their heart of hearts he will destroy the RAT candidate whomever that may be.

The destruction will be a result of Fred’s down home manner, his honesty, his fearless proposal of a real solution to the Social Security mess and his ability to speak plainly and simply. No word by word parsing needed.

No BS, no fooling around, what you see is what you get.

Very refreshing!

Yes, believing in your self and having deeply held beliefs does seem to allow for a certain consistency in debate answers.

No “poll tested” answers and straddling. The drivers licenses for illegals answer will prove to be Hil’s self-inflicted kill-shot. You won’t see Fred getting caught in that trap.

I think the media doesn’t like Fred because his points of view on issues can’t be reduced to two sentences or less.

But Fred isn’t done yet!! GO FRED!

Thompson tickled by Iowans’ independent voting streak
Radio Iowa
Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson says it “tickles” him that Iowa voters have an independent streak that seems to counter the so-called “conventional wisdom” of Washington pundits.

“I’m always reminded of the Howard Dean race, you know, when all the experts flew in there and Al Gore flew in and Tom Harkin — he endorsed and it was a done deal what, later than this, in the process,” Thompson says. “Well, of course it wasn’t a done deal and the people of Iowa had decided that they themselves had a voice in the thing and they decided something totally different and that just tickles me to death to know that.”

Thompson says he’s “going to go from one end of Iowa to the other” as the Caucus campaign closes to give Iowans a chance to size him up in person. “I’m going to be spending a lot of time with them over the next few weeks and at the end of the day they’re going to have an opportunity to see if Fred Thompson is the kind of guy they feel like could be solid and strong and experienced and lead us through what may be turbulent times over these next several years,” Thompson says.

Imagine how much they fear him becoming the nominee and having multiple one-on-one debates to present his values to America unfiltered by the soundbiters and spinners!

They are definitely scared of him! That feeling comes over very strongly! He hasn’t done anything to them, and yet they treat him like garbage. They treat Ron Paul with more respect than they treat him.

And .. the media is not paying any attention to Fred .. while the voters are. The media wants Rudy .. so they are ignoring good people like Fred and Duncan Hunter.

But .. this type of campaigning is exactly what Fred did the first time he won election - he went straight to the people.

While Coulter doesn’t like Fred because of his vote on impeachment .. and Ingraham openly says she’s favoring Hunter .. I still think Thompson has a great chance.

He better, or the core ideological conservatives won’t have a horse in this race. It will be the single issue voters that dominate.
