AIX EN PROVENCE, France (AFP) - A French court on Friday jailed five teenagers for up to nine years, for seriously burning a young woman in a bus they had set alight in the port city of Marseille last year.
The court in Aix, near Marseille, sentenced a young man who had thrown a flaming handkerchief into the bus on October 28, 2006 to nine years in prison.
The woman's life had been in danger after she suffered burns to 62 percent of her body.
Two defendants were jailed for seven years and two others got five years of which two and one respectively were suspended. A sixth youth was acquitted.
One of their lawyers, Thierry Ospital, said he found the sentences "fair".
"The jury took into account the neighbourhood, the personality of the accused and the role each of them played," he added.
Early Friday, the prosecution had asked for sentences of between five and 15 years in prison.
Victim Mama Galledou's lawyer Alain Molla said after speaking to his client on the telephone that she had only one reaction after the trial, "For me it's all over in my mind."
Galledou, who was 26 at the time of the attack, must still go through the appeal trial of two other youths who were tried separately in September and sentenced to eight years in prison.
The attack happened in an area on the outskirts of France's second city which firefighters at the time said did "not have a particular record of discourteousness or violence".
It came as France marked the first anniversary of the country's most serious riots in decades.

The article doesn’t give their names, but somehow I suspect the “yutes” have handles like Mohammed, Abdul, and Yusef.

They should be jailed for as long as her pain lasts. And they should pay every cent of her medical bills.

The victim was an illegal alien from Africa. That might explain why she was allowed to speak on TV and condemn the ypuths (who are of Arab descent). Otherwise, she would have been silenced by fear of “racist” speech. It’s the first time we get to hear a victim of the “youths” on TV, yet there were many.
Correction, she was a legal alien. She was a 26-year old student, probably milking her student visa. Now she is a cripple.
