Miss Utah Jill Stevens will have a combat boot up on the competition next month when she dons her pageant gown in Las Vegas.

Stevens, a contestant in the 2008 Miss America pageant, is also a sergeant in the Utah National Guard's 1st Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment.

But touting her slogan "Lock and Load," it's clear she's not your average beauty contestant. In fact, it wasn't until she was recruited for the Miss Southern Utah University pageant — where she studied nursing — that she even thought of entering a beauty contest.

Jill's Biography

For the past 6 years, Jill Stevens has been serving in the US Military as a Combat Medic in the Utah National Guard, while earning her degree in Nursing at Southern Utah University. In November 2003, Jill was deployed to Afghanistan, returning home in April 2005. She has earned 5 medals for her outstanding service, and was the first female finisher of the inaugural Afghanistan Marathon, making a total of 12 marathons she has completed together with earning the highest Fitness award during Army Basic Training. In representing the Army National Guard, Sergeant Stevens recently addressed Generals from 40 different nations gathered at Hill Air Force Base.

In addition to her US Military service, Jill recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Nursing program at Southern Utah University on a four-year leadership scholarship. Last summer, she placed 3rd in the Cinco De Mayo Sailboat Regatta in Mexico, and this summer, Jill was chosen one of four women for the “Women of Strength” featured in Muscle and Fitness Hers Magazine September/October 2007 issue. Additionally, Jill has been a fitness instructor for Gold’s Gym for several years, as well as a bread baker for Great Harvest. Possibly one of the most unusual adventures for Jill though, has been her unexpected experience in becoming Miss Utah 2007, and looking forward to her national competition in the Miss America Pageant in January 2008.

Hopefully her military service won't stand against her among the politically-motivated judges at the Miss America pageant.

Regardless, she will undoubtedly prove to be a significant weapon in the War on Terror  :-)

I am reminded, for some reason: Why is it that U. S. Army personnel nowadays wear cammies and combat boots virtually everyplace they go, on base and off, travelling in civilian commerical aircraft, et cetera, et, cetera, et cetera???
Its a good, honorable and serviceable uniform, but those army “greens,” or o.d.s, or whatever they were called, looked mighty neat. Being Old Navy, I wore my blues generally (or whites in summer) while off base/ship mingling among the civilian populace, not dungarees or their equivalent. Just curious.

Interesting bio of Miss Utah.

My daughter has some similar aspects. My daughter is Army Reserve - not Army National Guard like Miss Utah.

Miss Utah has gone to school for a Nursing degree, and has graduated. I surmise that she didn’t do ROTC, and has not yet sought a commission - but she certainly deserves one.
My daughter is finishing her schooling, and graduates next Saturday - I have the privilege and pleasure of administering the oath of office as she receives a commission in the Army Reserve - 2nd Lieutenant. (She did the last 2 years of her college on a Reserve ROTC scholarship.)

Miss Utah has been deployed to Afghanistan for 18 months - while in ROTC, my daughter is exempted from mobilization/deployment, but she will be eligible after she passes her Nursing boards and completes initial Army Officer Nursing training at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX.

And Miss Utah is much more physical ... marathons, fitness instructor ...WOW. (My daughter struggled to get through her first few PT tests - does okay now, but no “excellence” there!) Maybe if I encouraged her to start training for long runs!!!

The rules have changed. Until very recently, more so for some services than others, they could not wear "utility" uniforms to off base/post establishments, beyond a quick stop at the mini-mart or gas station, or a stop at the drive through at the choke and puke.

As part of a trend to "everyone a warrior", they are encouraged to do so. Of course BDUs and ACUs (and the Marine and AF equivalents) are much better looking than the 50s - 80s green fatigues. Even just before 911, the Air Force guidelines were not to wear "camo" off base, except as noted above. But all that's changed now, mostly for the better.

They also wear them, or in the case of fliers "green bags" when assigned to what amounts to "office work". That I don't care for, I think it's sloppy and unprofessional. I wouldn't make them wear Class A's\Combination 1 (or equivalent) or anything else with a tie, but the military equivalent to "corporate casual" would be fine, all year round.
