DES MOINES, Iowa - Republican Mitt Romney denies any responsibility for hiring illegal immigrants as workers at his home, insisting it was the fault of contractors and calling for tighter federal guidelines to verify the status of workers.
Asked by a reporter today if he shouldnt go the "extra mile" because of his business background and his strong advocacy of clamping down on illegal immigration in his presidential bid, the former Massachusetts governor shot back: "And whats the extra mile? So for instance, if I go to a restaurant, do I make sure all the waiters there are all legal?"

B.S.
All you had to do was ask the contractor to show you their papers. He would have left that day and you can guess why. A restaurant and your own back yard aren’t comparable.
Uhhh...once-bitten, twice-shy should apply here.
That aside, these illegals from at the Romney mansion are better off than the ones in Pasadena,TX.

BTTT
Wasn’t there some type deal with Tancredo a couple of years back with some contractor doing work on his house and had illegals hired as part of the crew?.... Don’t remember the details and I maybe confused on who/what/when....

Ooh. Testy.
I did the very thing when a young guy, very professional, quoted a tree trimming job on my huge maple,he said he could get on it right away.....the crew jumped out of a van and I promptly asked him if they were citizens....he closed up his contract book and left without saying a word. Pretty easy stuff!
Mitt, Mitt, Mitt. I wasn’t going to bash you over the incident, but I will bash you for this whiney response!
There. See. He's washed his hands.
So what about labor laws, and laws in general? He's just/was the head law enforcement officer of the State. And besides, he got a good price. Lot's cheaper than those legal companies.
I find it funny he keys in on “waiters”....what about the owner?
Don’t worry Fred will make it right, maybe.
But on immigration, Mr. Thompson had several votes where he bucked the pack and seemed to favor illegal aliens.
The most stark example was his 1995 vote on the welfare overhaul, when he voted to preserve illegal aliens’ ability to receive federal benefits. He was one of just six senators to vote that way, joining four other Republicans and one Democrat.
And in 1996, as Congress considered a crackdown on illegal aliens, Mr. Thompson voted against setting up a system so employers could verify the legal status of their workers.
That's the ticket.
Yes. He’s not handling this issue well, imho.
Well Mutt, If you OWN the restaurant, and the illegals have worked there for 10 freaking years, you might just want to check into it.
I generally like to talk to the guy who comes over to mow my lawn. I know him, and I know his sons, who occasionally come over to help. I even know that he once owned a farm but lost it, and that several generations of his family used to live by a pond near us.
How could you have a gang of Mexicans out there mowing your lawn every week and not notice it?
Maybe it’s not up to the average homeowner to check the citizenship of the guys who mow his lawn. But if you’re running for president, it’s peculiarly stupid or arrogant not to do so.
Would it be fair for me the next time there's a negative thread on Fred to point out that Mitt wears secret underwear and expects his own planet after he dies? No it wouldn't, so I'm not going to do that.
Testy was the first word I thought of too! Hey Mitt, you have to walk the walk, ya know?
