Navigation gadgets are now so widely available no one needs to worry about getting lost anymore - except when they're trying to choose the right device.
All global positioning system devices for cars give turn-by-turn voice directions, estimate travel times and list points of interest such as gas stations, banks, hotels and restaurants. GPS models geared for outdoor pursuits emphasize other features.
For all models, the prices rise with the number of bells and whistles.
Once you balance price against the features you want, the biggest differences you'll see will be in how the devices present maps, how their navigation interfaces work, the number of points of interest they include and the quality and size of their screens.
Here's a wide sampling:
Mio Digiwalker C230.
Garmin nuvi 760.
TomTom GO 720.
Magellan Triton.
Delorme Earthmate PN-20.
Garmin Forerunner 305.

I thought they make ones that work in the car that can be removed. I figured there were portable to be used in more than one car.
Do they make portable units that works in cars, *and* can be used for that GPS game - Geocaching?
Thanks!
I’ve dropped it into the water before with no problem (it floats), but I don’t see myself swimming with it.
I use a Delorme and a Tungsen Palm.
I thought you were talking about buying a car with a built in GPS. Portable is the only way to go.
You’re preaching to the choir! The only thing I need to do is update mine.
I may have gone over everyone’s head with that joke.
Mine has a 12v adapter, which I hardly ever use. If I want turn-by-turn directions (and I do occasionally in urban areas), I hook it up to my laptop and use Streets and Trips.
That would be the CIA/State Department models.
There is unfortunately no box to click in the program that says: "Please exercise common sense and give me a longer route if it means paved roads and civilization."
Who would be using the stream anyway besides fish?
I bought the Garmin 330c at Walmart at the 5:30 AM door busters sale the day after Thanksgiving. They had it priced at $124. What a steal. I can’t believe how accurate it is and how easy it is to use.
I have absolutely no use for the car type here in the area where I grew up.
And in the one case last summer I drove in a car with an integral GPS, it failed to show the exact street we needed to turn down (that I was familiar with already).
But for the mountains, and while navigating in my boat, the topo off road type is great!
My Mom-mobile (’06 Odyssey) has GPS built in. It’s one of the coolest gadgets ever — and I especially love how the Stephen Hawking computer voice mangles some of the street names. If only I could have it programmed to sound like Edward Woodward from the Equalizer, I’d be extra happy.
My husband is an avid hunter, and fisherman. I’m planning to get the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX for him for Christmas, but I know nothing about these systems. I read a few reviews.
I’d appreciate your input.
I used to travel a lot on business. A portable one is great for that. Since I’ve driven in the Seattle area since 1970, I don’t need one around here. I use google maps if I really must get a good idea of where I am going.
That said, when they get below $50, I’ll get one for the convenience.
Heck, I used to sell Sony CD Players in the early 80’s for $1,200. These things are coming down in price even faster.

The real question for this thread is, what brand of GPS unit are the fishies using??
Oh, goodness. No! I don’t think my husband would allow a car to match a new GPS :D
I think the portable kind is the kind to get. Any suggestions? I would love to get him one for Christmas.
The kind that can work in a car would be a plus, but I don’t know how important that really is. We rarely travel where we don’t know the roads.
Can I get on your Christmas list?
How true, I do stupid things like that all of the time.
