Thompson vs. Huckabee on Iran
CBS News ^ | 12/07/07 | John Bentley

Posted on 12/07/2007 11:40:21 AM PST by Route66

At a news conference that just wrapped up, Fred Thompson was asked what he thought of Mike Huckabee drawing a blank when asked about recent reports about the National Intelligence Estimate re: Iran.

"Not only is Iran the major long-term threat to our country, the nuclear program is the most important part of the Iran consideration. For a presidential candidate not to know that and not to keep up with that is very suprising," said Thompson.

"These are the kinds of things I've been talking about all of my life. Now, if the American people have other priorities, if they want someone who smiles a lot more than I do, or someone who is a better quipster than I am, who has no experience in these areas, that's for the American people to decide."

Thompson is now en route to Davenport, Iowa.

Fred is likely to win SC IMO.

He also might surprise with a #2 in IA or NH, not that they matter for much.

I’m probably not the only Republican that would never vote for a preacher in the primary.

“Speak no ill of another Republican” - Reagan’s law

from: A Pair for History

Disgruntled with Ford’s pursuit of détente with the Soviets, Ronald Reagan in 1975 decided to seek the seemingly impossible: to challenge the incumbent president from his own party, thereby breaking Reagan’s own “Eleventh Commandment:” “Thou Shall Not Speak Ill of Another Republican.”

Reagan fired unceasingly at Ford’s support of détente. “We are blind to reality if we refuse to recognize that détente’s usefulness to the Soviets is only as a cover for their traditional and basic strategy for aggression,” he said in October 1975. “Détente is for the Soviet Union a no-can-lose proposition.”

A preacher that walks away from his calling to become a politician is not worth much.

This should give every serious Christian pause!

Jesus was much too smart to do something like that ...

Doesn't matter to the 'banning abortion is the only thing we care about period end of story' crowd. Since the Huckster is the most dogmatic abortion opponent of the bunch, of course he'll get traction among the one-issuers.

Wake up, one-issuers, it's a dangerous world out there. It's a moot point to discuss abortion policy if the country no longer exists.

While you argue amongst yourselves re: candidates, can we figure out who’ll be able to deal with Iran?

Perhaps a preacher who walks away from his calling to become a politician was always a politician.

I am very concerned with Iran and what we’ll have to deal with after the election. That’s a large part of the reason I support Fred Thompson. While the ex-governors tout their executive experience, they have spent zero time dealing with issues of national defense or security. Fred has and he has focused on it more than any other candidate in this race, not that dull subjects like that get much national coverage. Instead, we have to fill the daily news cycle with stories about how often each candidate attends church or how they may or may not have alienated southern voters with an answer to a stupid setup question about the confederate flag.

“Speak no ill of another Republican” - Reagan’s law

I don't think RR meant for his "law" to apply during primary campaigns. A candidate can't run a successful campaign without pointing out his opponents gaffes, especially on issues as important as Iran's nuclear ambition. I trust Fred's take on foreign affairs issues far more than I would Huckabee's.

CrimeDog, thanks for your illustration.

Reagan in no way attacked Ford. As was his custom, he went after policies and philosophies, not the people who espoused them.

Discuss positions all you want, just “speak no ill of another Republican”.

Put another way, can the ad hominem attacks and vigorously debate the issues. And, once a standard-bearer has been selected, put down the bowl of sour grapes and work like crazy to get him elected (instead of You-Know-Who)

He didn’t speak ill of him. He complemented his smile and quick wit. And even says if thats what’s important to you to go ahead and vote for him.

One word: Class. I would like to see real class back in the White House.

If you have not seen this thread, you should take a look.

Huckabee was quite defensive when asked if he had had time to read the report yet.
