By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows:
Section 1. All executive branch departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Monday, December 24, 2007, the day before Christmas Day, except as provided in section 2 below.
Sec. 2. The heads of executive branch departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2007, for reasons of national security or defense or other public need.
Sec. 3. Monday, December 24, 2007, shall be considered as falling within the scope of Executive Order 11582 of February 11, 1971, and of 5 U.S.C. 5546 and 6103(b) and other similar statutes insofar as they relate to the pay and leave of employees of the United States.
GEORGE W. BUSH
THE WHITE HOUSE,
December 6, 2007.
I’m a government employee and I don’t have an outrageous salary. In fact our agency rates a little higher than others, but in exchange for that we have quantitative and qualitative goals that have to be met. It isn’t as easy as some think. Especially since we have certain procedural and legal issues that dictate the way we do business. In a way civil service is a lot like my military service.
Hoorah! for this most sacred of Christian Holy Days!
Hey, I’ve got an idea.
Why don’t you go off somewhere and play John Lennon’s “Imagine” to yourself, over and over?
Day of reckoning, my sphiserinctum....
Thank you, I am.
Does this include the postal service? Will the mail get delivered on Christmas Eve?
Merry Christmas to all Freepers.
Here’s something to absorb.

I just don’t understand the disagreement, the complaining, the tension, due to President Bush granting something that is pretty much done every year.
If you don’t work for the govt, then your company decides whether or not to give you the day off.
The main thing is, we make that choice when we work for others, and even when we are the boss.
We decide whether to work, based on need, or greed, or dependence of human life.
Because we live in a free country, and we have a choice.
If someone is jealous of the gov’t employees, then they need to get a job with the govt.
Happy New Years, and God Bless us ALL.
As little as possible. And thanks for paying my salary.
Merry Christmas!
And he indirectly gave us another day off... the day of his (Reagan's) funeral.
If it’s “we the people” then those that work for government work for us. So I am glad to give those people the day off. Pay them double time for not working!
Bush should give the federal government off until the 4th of July. That would be wonderful.
I’m a Gumment woiker and I am taking the day off, and charging the time to my hard earned accruals. The way it SHOULD BE!
You get paid? I’ve got to work for your company.
To tell you the truth, I don’t know if I’m off that day as a federal contractor (I’m the one who saves the taxpayers millions of dollars a year in superfund site costs).
Actually, I like a quiet day because I can actually get some work done.
Anyway, enjoy the holidays. Remember, only 50 days until we celebrate TET.
If you can’t find time to take a day off stop whining about it. Some things are more important than money.
It just seems a little strange that he does it by proclamation on December 6. My company just has it built into the holiday schedule. They knew back when the fiscal year started that Christmas fell on a Tuesday.
so with the Feds getting ANOTHER day off and the speculators gettiing to keep their very low interest rates I am just a happy taxpayer is all....
Wow, I wonder if I’ll get that day off at the AF base I work at, though I was planning on taking leave anyway.
I guess he found his “legacy.”
Patron of government employees.
(As if they couldn’t take a VACATION DAY!)
Government employees work?
As little as possible. And thanks for paying my salary.
nice attitude....
i’m sure you’re worth every penny we pay you
Sounds to me like you should be counting your blessings for a prosperous business and the freedom to work for yourself in this good economy.
You have any idea how many of those hourly government workers would love to be in your shoes?
Quit the grinching.
coooool!
