DES MOINES, Iowa Rep. Tom Tancredo says his fellow Republican presidential candidates are aiding immigrants in breaking the law by taking part in this weekend's Spanish-language debate in Miami.
"What all my colleagues what the other candidates are doing it's encouraging violation of the law because it's saying, 'Don't worry about the fact that you have to know English to earn citizenship,' " said Mr. Tancredo, the only Republican to turn down the invitation from Univision for Sunday night's debate and who said the other candidates' participation was worse than pandering.

Impressive
yo quiero taco bell.
I think Tom is on his way out as a candidate. He’s accomplished what he set out to do and he wouldn’t do himself any favors by attending. However saying the others are pandering is just plain foolish. Duncan Hunter regularly enters the lions den and speaks his mind without pandering.
I need to get out more.
Anyone who gives credence to the notion that Spanish is a legitimate language of politics or anything else for that matter in this country is pandering.
There is no reason why that language, that culture, that hideous failure should propagate into the life of the most successful country and nation the world has ever seen.
Duncan should know better. And stay away.
I kinda wish he showed up...it would have been an interesting debate
I can understand his reasons for not going...some of the candidates (not all) will be there to pander for the illegal-alien vote
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Hunter tell them to learn America’s language.
Good for him. English is our langauge and anyone wishing to participate in the policital process, should learn it. None of the candidates should show up at an event held in a foreign language.
If Hunter does say something confrontational, I expect to hear loud vociferous booing.

Don’t you have to be able to understand and speak English to become an American citizen?
So who are these candidates speaking to? Non-voting non-citizens? Then why?
Or VOTING non-citizens? WORSE.
I haven’t watched one of these doga nd pony shows yet. It will be as fair as the CNN one was.
“dog and pony” that is. spellcheck defective again.
Would have been fun if Tancredo had said that at that debate!
The idea of a Spanish language debate is stupid, not to mention completely unnecessary. Most native Spanish speakers who get their citizenship and vote also learn English, and feel insulted when someone speaks to them in Spanish.
But how exactly is participating in a presidential debate “aiding immigrants in breaking the law?” Hyperbole much?
I mean, are there hordes of illegals who can’t cross the border until they know Fred Thompson’s position on drilling in ANWR? Are there hidden codes in Mitt Romney’s answer on universal health care that reveal where the safe crossings are?
A Spanish language debate is stupid and no one should attend, but I would hope Tancredo would think about stuff before he opens his mouth.
fast forward 20 years when one principled conservative announces he will boycott the Muslim debate.
Good for Tancredo.
Tancredo attended a PBS sponsored debate aimed at a primarily liberal constituency. This was a debate that Giuliani, Romney, and McCain deigned was beneath their dignity to attend.
And Tancredo spoke out clearly even though most of what he had to say didn't want to be heard by the audience.
Tancredo is not afraid of "a lion's den". He is clearly making a statement in favor of One Nation, One Language.
