"We'll miss him in Massachusetts, but he'll be a strong leader at ATF, and I look forward to working with him on key issues on gun control." -- Senator Ted Kennedy |
Tuesday, December 4, 2007
The above quote highlights all you need to know about Michael Sullivan, the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Sullivan was, unfortunately, nominated by President Bush to permanently take over ATF this year. Right before Thanksgiving, the Senate "hotlined" his name for unanimous consent approval. (Hotlining is a parliamentary maneuver which allows non-controversial bills or nominations to be unanimously approved by the Senate without debate or a vote.)
GOA immediately sent a letter to each Senator's office, urging them to oppose the Sullivan nomination. Thankfully, one senator subsequently objected to Sullivan's approval, and his nomination was put on hold. However, that legislator is now coming under fire from other senators, who are asking him to withdraw his "hold."
That's why it's important for gun owners to contact their two Senators. Under Sullivan's leadership, the ATF has gone berserk. Sure, the problems at ATF didn't originate with him, but Sullivan has certainly done nothing to put out the fire.
While discussing the agency's 2008 appropriations bill, the House Commerce & Justice committee issued a stinging rebuke for the ATF:
The committee has heard reports that ATF has pursued license revocations and denials against firearms dealers based on violations that consist largely of recordkeeping...

Feinstein and Boxer?
Schumer and Clinton, who’s more helpless? I need any help I can get.
Boy, that's a toughie.
I need any help I can get.
The scary part is that our "Republican" President appointed such a person. He knows better and doesn't care.
Bush has a history of appointing liberals and cronies to cabinet positions and then having them turn on him at some point in the future. That is one of his biggest faults.
I wholeheartedly agree. We needed reform and all we got was alot of disappointment.
He wants someone to take care of those vigilantes who dare to presume we should actually enforce our laws.
What, and make the the internal part of the Department of Homeland Security virtually unnecessary? What are you thinking, man? Without those trained professionals being told not to do their jobs on full retirement and hazard pay, who would keep us safe? How are we going to employ all those worthless indentured grovillmint union Democrat constituents?
Surely you jest!!
Bush’s fault
BUMP
Who else would want the job of overseeing a blatantly unconstitutional agency.
One whose mission may shortly be severely shrunken by a USSC decision. (We Hope!).
While I agree, don't forget the Explosives.
When I was an undergraduate, and AFROTC cadet, I used to stop at a convenience store. on my way from the U to my apartment, (I often walked the last mile or so, since the cheap U bus only got that close to our apartment) that carried Tobacco, and Firearms. Don't know about Alcohol, at least the drinking kind, but probably not given the place and times, but they did sell gasoline, which could make an "Explosive" Molotov cocktail. They even had their own house brand of ammunition. (It was really Federal I think).
Keep ‘em charged and ready.
Now that wouldn't be a problem if we didn't have a Federal Gun Police (FGP) . Having FGP is sort of incompatible with: "...the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". So, we should not a have any FGP.
Anyone care to defend this?
Did GOA manage to send out a solicitation that didn’t blame the NRA? That would be a first.
"Because of these concerns, I would ask that you please oppose the Sullivan nomination, and instead work with Gun Owners of America and the NRA to find a nominee who will protect the rights of innocent gun owners."
Heck, it looks like they want to collaborate.
He's still working on the new tone. /sarc
