New York state officials took their battle against relicensing of the aging Indian Point nuclear power plant on the Hudson River to another level today.
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, and Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano have submitted documents asking the federal government to deny the relicensing of Indian Point sought by owner-operator Entergy Corporation.
The papers filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, NRC, identify dangerous deficiencies in Entergy's relicensing application for Indian Point related to terrorism, earthquakes, evacuation plans, and the surrounding population density.
"The Indian Point relicensing application wholly fails to address a number of crucial issues, and it should not be granted in its present form," said Governor Spitzer.
In a statement from its White Plains office, Entergy replied that a forced shutdown of the Indian Point Energy Center "would severely impact the economic and environmental health of the Lower Hudson Valley region and New York City."

If New York wants to shut down Indian Point, then they shouldn’t gripe when they have to freeze in the dark or pay huge amounts of money for power from Canada.
Okay, shut it down. Let the liberals enjoy the dark for a while. "It's like, totally back to nature, man."
Well heck, let’s build some greenhouse gas spewing power plants. If combustion free ain’t green enough then let’s shut off the lights. That is what it is coming to. Rationed electricity. You will be allowed so much and no more. The technology is already available through smart metered devices. Forced conservation.
I like the way you think.
I like the way you think too. Perhaps I’m also bipolar.
Let Albany freeze in the dark
And they should get NO Federal Funding to shut down the core.
Fine. Freeze, if you please.
How then, in Heaven's name, will the clowns at OCC Choppers be able to finish another motorcycle? This'll put the Teutels out of business. Discovery Channel will have to go back to shows featuring that annoying a$$hat Jesse James.
efficient energy alert.
lets go back to living in caves with lighting by moonlight!! save the mother earth gaia /sarc>
I don’t live in NY, so am not familiar with the efficiency of this plant. Anyone from NY want to fill us in?
No nukes, no clean coal, not enough gas to supply the new plants *and* new customers, no drilling off the coasts or in newly designated interior lands.
Yup. Democrats sure have comprehensive energy plan.
What a bunch of dumbasses. Not them, their constituents.
Are they insane? That plant provides a constant what, 2300 megawatts of power? Are they going to pull that out of their butts instead? Or buy some more oil from Venezuela or Saudi Arabia? Or fire up some more 19th century coal technology (because mercury is just sooo good for the environment and human health)? Perhaps “compensate” for the loss with, say, wind turbines with 1/500th the power output? Rolling brownouts?
All of that is far too generous. The moronic anti-nuclear luddites probably have no plan or concept of a problem with their scheme at all.
More like Nightfall, by Ray Bradbury, iirc.
Especially to NYC.
Then gov. Pataki wanted to install something like 20 NG powered mini emergency generator sites around the NYC for future "disasters".
The NIMBY crowd won.
I have no sympathy for those morons.
