MI5 Warns Firms Over China's Internet 'Spying'
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | December 1, 2007 | By Sophie Borland

Posted on 12/01/2007 8:12:54 AM PST by JACKRUSSELL

The Government has accused China of carrying out an internet spying campaign against vital parts of the economy, it has been reported.

The head of the MI5 sent a letter to more than 300 senior executives at banks, accountants and legal firms earlier this week warning them of a web-based attack from Chinese state organisations.

The letter warns that British firms doing business in China are being targeted by the Chinese army, which is using the internet to steal confidential information to benefit Chinese companies.

It is believed to be the first time the Government has directly accused China of involvement in such tactics and could cast a shadow on Gordon Brown's visit to the country in the new year.

A summary of the letter, signed by Jonathan Evans, the director-general of MI5, was posted earlier this week on the website of the Centre of the Protection of the National Infrastructure, an organisation charged with protecting the country's computer systems.

It says: "The contents of the letter highlight the following: the director-general's concerns about the possible damage to UK business resulting from electronic attack sponsored by Chinese state organisations, and the fact that the attacks are designed to defeat best practice IT security systems."

The summary, which can only be seen by certain companies such as water, electricity and telecoms firms, adds: "The letter acknowledges the strong economic and commercial reasons to do business with China, but the need to ensure management of the risks involved."

It is suspected that Chinese organisations may have created special software designed to hack into the network of a company and feed back confidential information.

Last night, no one from the Chinese embassy in London was available for comment.

• A teenager from New Zealand was questioned yesterday by detectives searching for the mastermind of an internet scam in which millions of pounds was stolen from bank accounts across the world.

Detectives in Hamilton, on the country's North Island, seized computer equipment from the home of an 18-year-old in the search for "Akill", the head of an elite international "spybot" ring. The scam was said to have infected millions of computers around the world, allowing the organisers to intercept bank details.

To hear most of the presidential candidates talk, there is nothing to be concerned about. I laugh out loud, when I watch them, to keep from tearing up. Most of all, hillary / bill, by their actions, think chinese fund raisers are the cream of the crop. I have to believe many other of the candidates would love to reap the benefits of chinese money. So most of the candidates will say not a word. China can spend millions to influence our elections and the majority of the candidates and the old media will be more than willing to turn into the three monkeys and accept the money with glee. Thank God, Mr. Duncan Hunter is not as a majority of the candidates are, and is not willing to join the three monkeys with mouth covered, ears covered, and eyes covered. Mr. Hunter, the American Conservative, America should be willing to hear....opps...there’s those three monkeys again.

"MI5 Warns Firms Over China's Internet 'Spying'"

In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be
attended by a bodyguard of lies.

Time for MI5 (and other Western nations) to get busy, even just
reading about the use of Misinformation in WWII.
And start teaching companies how to screw with the brains doing
the Chinese Internet wartime work.

This could be the least expensive phase of the war with China.

Information warfare is the new battlefield of technologically savvy nations, and China will kick our collective arses.

Most computers are manufactured overseas, a considerable number of them (or their components) are made in China. How hard would it be for them to add additional hardware/firmware/software to a hard drive that calls back to a home office periodically to do an "info dump?"

The US Government buys literally tens of thousands of computers every year from contractors such as Dell, who use components manufactured or assembled in China. Does anyone see the problem here????

Don't think it can happen??

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=58819

And that's just the one instance we KNOW about.

Even better. Where is the software scripting from? The gets around the computer. That can create a backdoor around any firewall.

Just a thought.
