In Khartoum today, a crowd described by some as numbering in the hundreds and by others in the thousands, marched in support of a death sentence for Gillian Gibbons, the British schoolteacher who was convicted of insulting Islam after her class of seven-year-olds named a teddy bear "Muhammad":
The protesters, some carrying swords, screamed, Shame, shame on the U.K.! and, Kill her, kill her by firing squad.
The demonstration followed Friday evening services in which imams denounced Ms. Gibbons, but some observers said that the marchers included "government employees ordered to demonstrate." Others said that the protest didn't seem especially threatening. The New York Times, in the article linked above, provides this helpful explanation:
This woman gave an idol the name of Muhammad, which is not acceptable, said Ahmed Muhammad, the imam at a mosque in Khartoum 2, an upscale section of town. *** In Islam, insulting the Prophet Muhammad is a grave offense, and worshiping idols is prohibited.
Actually, I haven't seen any reports that the seven-year-olds were worshiping the teddy bear. And, while it may be slightly reassuring to be told that some of those demanding Gibbons's murder were acting on government instructions, what is problematic is the bizarre social context in which such instructions can plausibly be given. Radical Islam--sometimes I think we would better call it nutty Islam--is a problem with which the world has yet to grapple seriously.
UPDATE: At the Forum, poster bluea draws an interesting parallel:
Note that around Seattle were pretty darn close to being ordered to protest. From Evergreen College grading protesters on their protesting skills, to high schools getting protest days as paid absences, theres a whole lot of top down protesting.
With pitiful attendance, btw.
In Seattle, though, I assume that the protesters aren't being directed to agitate for murder.
FURTHER UPDATE: It didn't take long for the persecution of Gillian Gibbons to generate supportive web sites. At (Tolerance Teddy.com) you can support the "right to BEAR names" by buying a teddy bear named Muhammad:
Buy the bear then sign the (petition)
In the words of Bugs Bunny, “What a bunch of maroons”.
What the devil is the matter with those people? Oh, wait. I think I know. Nevermind.
Come on now. Where's the satire tag?
(2007-11-30) As a Sudanese court handed down a 15-day jail sentence for a British women convicted of allowing school children to name a teddy bear after The Prophet of Islam, Mattel Toys announced today it would delay the launch of its much-anticipated Tickle Me Muhammad toy line.
The teacher, Gillian Gibbons, 54, narrowly escaped 40 lashes, six months in prison and a fine, thanks to the mercy of the Islamic court which instead commended her to the care of the Sudanese penal system where shell be one of 1,200 women and children incarcerated in a mosquito-infested prison built to hold about 200.
A Mattel spokesman said the Sudan teddy bear case has caused the company to rethink the propriety of the planned pre-Christmas release of Tickle Me Muhammad, which it described as a cuddly adorable friend, with a long plush beard and a puffy turban, who laughs uncontrollably when you touch him almost anywhere.
We really thought it would help soften the image of Muslims, said the unnamed Mattel source, and help to bring about the peaceful world order which they have been fighting for almost non-stop over the past 1,400 years.

Muslims make Truthers, Code Pinkers, Paultards almost look sane!
ROTFLMAO!!
This is why there is no negotiating with these people, but the libtards will never get it.
WORDS TO THE TEDDY BEAR’s PICNIC SONG
(if you don’t know the tune, check this site)
If you go out in the woods today
You’re sure of a big surprise.
If you go out in the woods today
You’d better go in disguise.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.
Picnic time for teddy bears,
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today.
Watch them, catch them unawares,
And see them picnic on their holiday.
See them gaily dance about.
They love to play and shout.
And never have any cares.
At six o’clock their mommies and daddies
Will take them home to bed
Because they’re tired little teddy bears.
If you go out in the woods today,
You’d better not go alone.
It’s lovely out in the woods today,
But safer to stay at home.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic
CHORUS
Every teddy bear, that’s been good
Is sure of a treat today
There’s lots of wonderful things to eat
And wonderful games to play
Beneath the trees, where nobody sees
They’ll hide and seek as long as they please
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic
CHORUS
Death for a name. These are the same uncivilized brutes who rioted over a cartoon. When is the civilized world going to see that these people should not be allowed in any civilized country.
The Muhammed Bobble Head: A great stocking stuffer this CHRISTMAS!
HO-HO-HO!
BTW: IMUS returns! NYC 6AM 77WABC!
Oh that’s hilarious! Thanks for the laughs...
Ridicule is often the best response. I wonder if the two “South Park” creators would consider a thoroughly rated-R, tasteless (.. easy for them!) show that routinely showed militant wackjob Islam as ... well, basically everything the “real deal” claim to hate, including gay, cross-dressing, pedophilic, poorly-endowed, etc. etc.
The mohammedans should never be allowed to get away with calling it a ‘religion of peace again’....
My dog Muhammed bit me when he learned who he was named after.
Hey, Ahmed, what's YOUR LAST NAME????
As a catholic, I do not know anyone with the name Christ, Jesus or God.
That was a terible insult to your dog; you deserved to get bitten. Now, if you’d named a local plague rat after Mohammed . . .
