Groups that support a crackdown on illegal aliens havn't settled on their champion in the race for the White House, but there's little doubt which Republican scares them the most - former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. "He was an absolute disaster on immigration as governor," said Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, a group that played a mojor role in rallying the phone calls that helped defeat this year's Senate immigration bill. "Every time there was any enforcement in his state, he took the side of the illegal aliens." Just as problematic for the former Arkansas governor, however, is that the independent interest groups that track the issue are also giving him the once-over, and don't like what they see. "Huckabee is the guy who scares the heck out of me," said Peter Gadiel, president of 9-11 Families for a Secure America, a group instrumental in fighting for the REAL ID Act that sets federal standards for driver's licenses. Some leaders said Mr. Huckabee reminded them of President Bush, who pushed for legalization of illegal aliens and a new supply of foreign guest workers, despite his base calling for better border security and enforcement. Huckabee said he's willing to take the heat for pushing for illegal alien students to be able to get taxpayer-funded financial aid and college scholarships.

I believe they want the Republicans to have a fractured convention; if Rooty, Huckster, Romney, and Thompson each come to Minnesota with roughly a quarter of the delegates apiece, it is guaranteed that there will be no unity behind the eventual nominee.
It can happen.

1. Strong on social issues (implying a firm commitment to appoint good judges).
2. Strong on the WOT.
3. Strong on Immigration.
4. Is a fiscal conservative.
5. Has held an executive position successfully. Phonies that raise their hands in a roll call in Congress will attract 2% of the total vote. People are not stupid to categorize long winded talk in Congress and raising your hand correctly as proof of competence.
Pitiful, ain’t it?
The Huckster surge is easy to explain. It’s a MSM confection. Why? Because the MSM is 90% for a ‘rat presidential victory (Hillary or Obama). The greatest ‘rat weakness against a strong Republican is their open borders and pro-amnesty postition, which the MSM realize will cost them the election. So to innoculate Hillary or Obama against a strong Republican who is against open borders and the invasion, they want to promote the Huckster. If the Huckster runs against either ‘rat, the ‘rat will win, because a Huckster nomination effectively removes the illegal invasion from the debate.
Add your 15 to my 25, and you have the MSM formula for 2008.
I was hoping you'd say something more, like it would prove Huckabee was a hypocrite if he ran with a pro-choice candidate.

The same evangelicals who support Huckabee swooned, when in a debate during the primaries, George Bush said Jesus Christ was his favorite political philosopher. He explained that Jesus had “changed his life.” Jesus saved him from a life in the drunk tank and we’re supposed to vote for him because he admitted it? Evangelicals fell for it hook, line, and sinker. At the time I thought it was an incredibly manipulative and pandering remark from someone who supposedly graduated from Yale with a history degree. Presumably, he studied American history and had heard about Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, et al. For a lot of naive voters, Bush’s answer was enough to convince them that he was one of them. They didn’t care about any other qualifications or his stands on issues. It’s the same with the lemmings who are Huckabee supporters.
Barf.

Well put!
I don’t think so and I hope not. Now that he’s risen to some prominence his record will be seriouisly examined. He can tell all the jokes he wants but today with the internet, 24/7 cable and so many anti-illegal alien watchdog groups (like NumbersUSA), he won’t be able to hide from his past. I see from some of the posts that many FReepers are already very well informed about his record.
When I watched Lou Dobbs tonight I heard a guy who always has a good word for the illegal invaders praise Huckabee. That alone would make me check his record! You can tell a lot about someone by looking at the agenda of those who support him!
Mike’s immigration idiocy won’t be any better received than Bush’s by the base, and Republicans don’t need another pro illegal leader tearing down the party.
Exactly. And we in the base should make our views known.
I agree. But I think religious conservatives will abandon him because illegal immigration is a HUGE social issue. Religious conservatives are just as disgusted as others with higher taxes for prison incarceration, bankrupt public school districts, social welfare costs, insolvent hospitals and the crimes and human misery brought to us by the drug cartel.
Thanks much for all the good information.
