House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee Chairman John Murtha (D-Pa.) has taken the unusual step of publicly clarifying his remark that the surge is working in Iraq.
Murtha, a former Marine and top adviser to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on military matters, had often said previously that the surge is not working.
The clarification came after House Republicans circulated an article about Murthas comments written in Fridays edition of his home-state Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after a teleconference from Murthas Johnstown, Pa., office. In addition to saying that the surge is working, the Post-Gazette reported, Murtha called the Iraqi government dysfunctional and said, The thing that has to happen is the Iraqis have to do this themselves. We can't win it for them.
That put him in line with the current position of the House Democratic leadership that the extra troops have done a good job of reducing violence, but the Iraqi government has been squandering the opportunity.
This morning Murtha issued the following statement through his spokesman:
The military surge has created a window of opportunity for the Iraqi government. Unfortunately, the sacrifice of our troops has not been met by the Iraqi government and they have failed to capitalize on the political and diplomatic steps that the surge was designed to provide.
The fact remains that the war in Iraq cannot be won militarily, and that we must begin an orderly redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq as soon as practicable.
The House of Representatives has passed a $50 billion funding bill that provides the president, our troops and our nation with a responsible plan for bringing our troops home. The president should heed the advice of the American people and allow this funding bill to become law.
“My daddy would say that the Dem leadership has photographs of Murtha in a house of ill-repute . . .”
That would require nutz, which Murtha lacks.
“My daddy would say that the Dem leadership has photographs of Murtha in a house of ill-repute . . .”
Congress?
If Repubs had any stones, Murtha’s “surge is working” comment would be made into a commercial.
Well, there you go.
He’s in a quagmire, time for him to re-deploy to Okinawa.
“What I meant to say was the surge is working, while it is not working.” Doublethink = the ability to hold 2 completely different opinions on a subject and believe both of them to be true.
In a moment of distraction he spoke the truth. Bad democrat. He will have to be reeducated.
The Iraqi government is considered dysfunctional because it is not set up to receive wholsale graft like he does.
Stroke....stroke...
Lee Harvey Oswald.
Clayton Longtree.
Good one! < LOL >
Also a good one! < g >
Murtha the arsehole, once again proving he is too ignorant, senile, corrupt and flaky to serve in ANY position of public trust or responsibility...
Guess we need to invent a new term for Murtha: MINO (Marine In Name Only)
“What we have here is a failure to communicate!”
Well of course (and the Senate is just across the hall from it;)
Murtha, do not forsake the Troops.
We have this won.
We do not need you standing in the way.
so far as I can tell, their bill has no plan at all for bringing our troops home, responsibly or otherwise.
Their bill simply says the president has to start bringing the troops home. The PRESIDENT has to put together the plan under their bill, they simply make the order of surrender.
