Sen. Thompson's closed-door impeachment statement (Feb 12, 1999)
CNN ^ | February 12, 1999 | Fred Thompson

Posted on 11/30/2007 1:02:11 AM PST by Kurt Evans

"Make no mistake, perjury is a felony, and its commission by a President may sometimes constitute high crimes and misdemeanors. But is removal appropriate when the President lied about whether he was refreshing his recollection or coaching a witness about the nature of a sexual relationship? Is removal appropriate when the President lied to the grand jury that he denied to his aides that he had engaged in sex only as he had defined it, when in fact he had denied engaging in oral sex? Is removal warranted because the President stated that his relationship began as a friendship in the wrong year and actually encompassed more telephone encounters than could truthfully be described as 'occasional'? To ask the question is to answer it. In my opinion, these statements, while wrong and perhaps indictable after the President leaves office, do not justify removal of the President from office."

--Senator Fred Thompson, February 12, 1999

Maybe I need a new tagline. FDT one of the 10 reasons we have HRC today.

I don’t want a politician that pleases everyone anyway. I just want one that pleases me.

It's an elimination poll being done by WHO Radio here in Iowa. The first week, Hillary Clinton was eliminated. Fred is on the bubble for this week. It may just be starting today for the week. I'm not sure. So far, some guy I'd never heard of has been eliminated along with Chris Dodd, Clinton, and Keyes.

How do I make it a link? I'm sorry I don't know how to do it.

Bill hate does not necessarily translate into Hillary hate. And possibly not at the same amplitude.

Bill is hated because he is a liar, sexual predator, snake in the grass, everyone wanted to wipe that smug lying smile off his face. Nothing is worse then someone smiling through their lies.

Hillary is different.

Have you all noticed that the original poster STILL has not come back to really explain himself?

In other words, he has no REAL point. He felt he had a “gotcha” that he could use against Thompson to support his liberal candidate, Huckabee, and he made a drive-by post to try to stir the pot.

He’s attempted no debate, he’s made no statements, and he’s made no points at all.

This is a brainless attempt to attack with NO substance at all! No substance is typical of Huckabee supporters, though. Because if they were interested in substance, they couldn’t support the Huckster!

A support of Huckabee is just an anti-Romney vote and little else. It’s a voter that wants a center left candidate.... but cannot vote for a Mormon!

Just so I'm completely clear.

I'm supposed to reject the only leading candidate on either side that is unambiguously pro-gun, and the only candidate on either side to put forth serious and meaningful ideas on Immigration, Tax reform, and Social Security reform, because he doesn't hate Bill Clinton enough?

Is that want you're saying?

But is removal appropriate ...

Thompson appears to be a good man, but this was not his finest hour. Senators are not to judge "appropriateness." That is the job of the members of the House of Representatives. Senators are supposed to judge the truth of the charges brought by the House.

Very good observation. Indeed many believe, even though it has never been really said outright, that was part of equation in many minds. Toss Clinton and have a fresh incumbent or have the Democrats face 2000 with damaged goods.

We can debate the right and wrong, but this is politics and occasionally tactics have to come into play.

I love the fact that Hillary was eliminated the very first week. I'm not sure if they reset it each week but that would make sense and I heard them say on the radio earlier this am that they would be giving the results for this week today.

Paul seems to be getting the most R votes.

Difference between “truth” and “whole truth”. Ann’s statement was a half truth to show Thompson soft on impeachment. Not Ann’s finest hour.

I would expect as much from a Ron Moonbat supporter, talk about gag at a gnat and swallow a camel. You criticize Fred for not voting the right way all the time and support a nut job who only becomes a Republican during election season.

Go easy on them, it has been a bad week. Bin Laden says he’s defeated in Iraq, so it really has to suck to be a Paul supporter right now.

Also Ron’s not ruling out Dennis the Menace as a running mate...

Well the Blimp is a little deflated...

“Fred voted to convict Clinton on the other count and thus remove him from office.”

yes, but that totally destroys the lying smear.
